Meet Okuhle Hlongwane

Okuhle Hlongwane, born and raised in Umlazi KwaZulu-Natal. Currently residing in uMlazi is a radio presenter at Intokozo FM.

When Did You Realise Your Love for Radio?

Funny story actually. If I’ll be honest, growing up I have never been a fan of radio at all but I’ve always been a huge lover of the creative arts – mostly music. I remember back when I was younger and my family would still carry this tradition of listening to Metro FM every Sundays from like the early mornings until 6PM and the radio was placed right underneath the TV, which would create major problems for me and my brother because at that time, we were still wrestling fans and this was back when WWE was still playing on eTV during the weekends – so having the radio play while we were watching TV always caused conflict especially since Metro was still playing those old school R&B/Soul tunes and I used to think it was all boring at the time.

So my journey into radio actually began because I had to find a place to complete my in-service training so I could graduate from college, and at that time, I was studying a 3-year Diploma in Sound Technology course. I had plans to work at a recording studio but obviously life doesn’t always go according to plan and I had people every now and then tell me that I should just try looking at radio stations for an opportunity – so eventually I took a chance and tried radio. I initially tried Vuma FM but that turned out to be unsuccessful so my family told me to try Intokozo FM since it was within my area anyways. Fast forward to February 2020, I approached the programmes manager and I landed my very first job in life ever working at a radio station.

I started off as someone who just wanted to get their in-service training done and dusted ASAP so I could graduate but as time went by, I began to understand how things work and I had some skills already in terms of using technology and having a background in music and sound so it didn’t take long for me to fit in – and within a few months, I was officially a part of the family and went from being an intern to being the main studio technician, music compiler and by October 2020, I was asked to be part of the Hip-Hop show (which was hosted by Simphiwe “Fortune” Thabethe) and I’ve been part of the show ever since.

Although my love for radio wasn’t there at all, once I actually joined the industry and had some experience, my love began to grow and I was able to see all the other ways I could use this platform to expand on a professional and a personal level and it’s been an amazing journey ever since – I’ve had the pleasure of being able to network with people in different industries and use my creativity in ways I didn’t think were possible.

Besides Radio, What Do You Do?

When I’m not on air, I work on graphic designs and music/audio production. I’m a huge fan of the arts so I use any opportunity/time I have when I’m not at work to explore these other ventures. Studying and researching different ways of self-improvement both professionally and personally is highly important to me.

Advice to Anyone Who Wishes to Pursue the Dream of Radio Personality?

Don’t ever stop going after what you want. You may not get to where you feel you need to be, but understand that every move you make towards your goal – no matter how small – will always put you a step closer. Always take time to study and research on bettering your craft, listen to people’s advice, be humble when facing constructive criticism, understand that every mistake made is only a lesson and not a loss and even a loss doesn’t mean you’ve lost. Also, remember that sometimes life may take you to other places before you can finally get to your destination (my story is living proof) – so be open to opportunities when you see them. I have heard stories of people who start off as a cleaner at a company before actually being introduced into a higher level within the organisation so you never know what could happen.
