The Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) has noted with growing concern the recent attacks in the media against the legal profession by ministers, executives of statutory entities and senior members of the judiciary.
The legal profession is not merely bound by a specific set of rules- it is integral to the administration of justice and is a cornerstone of South Africa’s democracy.
Law enforcement agencies in Berea, along with Metro Police and multiple private security companies, launched a crackdown on abandoned buildings in the Musgrave and Berea areas, on Friday, August 23. The joint effort, spearheaded by Berea SAPS, resulted in the arrest of five suspects, who were charged with various offences.
Residents expressed relief and support for the large-scale operation, which demonstrated the collaborative force of law enforcement in the area.

The Nquthu Regional Court sentenced a 34-year-old man to five terms of life and 30 years imprisonment for the multiple r**es he committed in the Mondlo area between October 2020 and August 2022.
The accused was sentenced to five terms of life and 30 years imprisonment. The court ordered that his name be added to the National Register for S*x Offenders, and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
While in his room, he r***d her. Thereafter, he let her go outside but threatened to hit her if she told anyone about what he had done.
The NPA welcomes the successful finalisation of this matter.
A man, wanted for an alleged r**e and assault case in Bhekithemba, Umlazi, was recently arrested by the Metro Police drug team.
This follows an intelligence-driven operation conducted by the Metro Police drug team, Spectre Security, Fidelity SIU, and Drew Force Security.
The suspect was processed at the Umlazi police station.

Severe winds devastate Tongaat Tongaat and surrounding suburbs were ravaged by a powerful tornado on Monday afternoon, as captured by several residents via video and picture footage. Roshan Lil-Ruthan, communications spokesperson and liaison officer of the Verulam Water Crisis Committee, emphasized the urgent need for emergency and relief efforts. “We are urgently requesting assistance including emergency services, chainsaws, TLBs (Tractor Loader Backhoes), heavy equipment, trucks, blankets, food, and other essential supplies. Hundreds of people have been affected and require immediate aid. We appeal for humanitarian assistance. If you can offer assistance, please come forward to support the Tongaat community during this crisis,” he said.
