WATCH: Heartfelt memorial held for fallen homeless people
Homeless people are part of the broader community and should be treated with dignity in life and in death. This was the overarching sentiment conveyed at a moving tribute to four homeless people, who passed in recent weeks.
The management of a local shelter organised the memorial service, held at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church in the Point area, and drew in nearly 100 homeless people to the service to bid a heartfelt farewell to their departed friends.
Payless Shelter’s Jennifer Fisher said those who have found themselves on the streets are homeless but not hopeless.
54-year-old physiotherapist, Ester Kwitegetse, spoke about how she found herself living in a shelter.

In the spirit of South Africa’s idol and former president, Nelson Mandela, schools across Chatsworth came together in a friendly competition for this year’s ‘Coding for Mandela’ competition at Havenside Hall.
The dedicated hosts for the exciting and innovative event, Southlands Secondary School, brought their A-game to win the high-school category in a blistering seven minutes, while Evergreen Primary School’s little Einsteins brought home the win for the primary school category.
The school’s principal, Praveena Chetty, explained the idea and importance behind cultivating a future generation knowledgeable in both coding and robotics.
The atmosphere in the hall was electric as children of all ages embraced the event and worked together with their teams to crack the code and make their school and classmates proud. The competition’s enthusiastic MC took hold of the mic to elaborate on the event.

The group took in the breathtaking scenery in the oft-overlooked area of Welbedacht, going door-to-door in the community to donate much-needed wheelchairs to those identified to need wheelchairs.

Severe winds devastate Tongaat
Tongaat and surrounding suburbs were ravaged by a powerful tornado on Monday afternoon, as captured by several residents via video and picture footage. Roshan Lil-Ruthan, communications spokesperson and liaison officer of the Verulam Water Crisis Committee, emphasized the urgent need for emergency and relief efforts.
“We are urgently requesting assistance including emergency services, chainsaws, TLBs (Tractor Loader Backhoes), heavy equipment, trucks, blankets, food, and other essential supplies. Hundreds of people have been affected and require immediate aid. We appeal for humanitarian assistance. If you can offer assistance, please come forward to support the Tongaat community during this crisis,” he said.
The estimated cost to repair the extensive damage caused by the tornado runs into millions. This story is still developing.
