Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was only a few meters from the finish line, but got confused with the signs and stopped, thinking he had finished the race. A Spanish man, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him and, realizing what was going on, started shouting to the Kenyan to keep running. Mutai did not know Spanish and did not understand.

Realizing what was going on, Fernandez pushed Mutai to victory. A reporter asked Ivan, "Why did you do this?" Ivan replied, "My dream is that one day we can have some sort of community life where we push ourselves and help each other win." The reporter insisted "But why did you let the Kenyan win?" Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win. The race was his."

The reporter insisted and asked again, "But you could have won!" Ivan looked at him and replied: "But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor of this medal? What would my Mother think of it?" The values are transmitted from generation to generation. What values do we teach our children and how much do you inspire others to earn? Most of us take advantage of people's weaknesses instead of helping to strengthen them.

Happy Birthday former President Cde Thabo Mbeki

Today, the 18th of June 2020, former President of the ANC and the Republic of South Africa, Cde Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki, turns 78. We join his family, friends, and our country to wish him a joyful and blessed birthday.

His organisation, the African National Congress, is truly fortunate that this stalwart has lived to reach the twilight of his years. We are indebted to him for his inspiration, patriotism, and willingness to continue to share his experience, skills, and wisdom with the people of South Africa. We know that his insights will be invaluable as our country crafts economic recovery plans for a more equal and radically different South Africa post Covid-19. His life inspires us to vigorously pursue the vision of a South Africa which is truly united, non-racial, non-sexist, equal, and prosperous.

On his birthday, we also think about all the people of Africa and diaspora as it is inconceivable to think of him without regard to the unity, dignity, and development of Africa. Today, we recommit ourselves to the pan African vision of the African renaissance, the ideal of the African century, and to push back the frontiers of poverty.
