The European Film Festival 2025 kicks off today!

This is the 5th year that we’ve had the opportunity to design the festival identity for the European Film Festival in South Africa, and we are very proud of the progression and ex*****on of this identity alongside the team who have taken over the organisation of this event.

We dubbed the design direction as “Modern Pop(corn)”, which drew reference from striking, modern, and geometric design. The design has global appeal while also embracing a modern South African aesthetic that is unapologetically bold and colourful.

We presented the festival design with a social media look and feel to set the tone for the digital rollout for this year. Other elements include the festival website, as well as adaptations of the graphic for various branding elements like pull up banners, media walls and the motion animation, created by our friends .

Check out the festival screenings in Cape Town and Joburg and also a selection of films taking place online for free.

In April this year, groundWork opened a powerful legacy exhibition at the KZNSA Gallery, titled “groundWork: 25 Years of Activism for Environmental Justice”. The exhibition included a vast archive of their printed publications, posters, and banners.

We were already in the initial stages of a layout design project involving groundWork, DUT and LUMEC, so this was an incredible source of inspiration. We got to physically engage with years of groundWork’s campaign materials, which directly informed our work and understanding of what the organisation stands for.

We design and lay out reports, brand guidelines and catalogues for various industries, but the research and referencing process behind this project was definitely a highlight.

More about groundWork:

Established in 1999, groundWork Friends of the Earth South Africa is a principles driven non-profit environmental justice organisation working towards a just transition and open democracy in South Africa and beyond. Its vision is that “people live well with each other and with the earth”. To realise this vision, groundWork partners with affected communities to resist dirty energy and toxic production, building solidarity and local alliances that advocate for open debate and democratic control over resources such as energy, waste and health towards a viable future.

groundWork works with community organisations, peoples’ movements, and other civil society actors to hold government and corporates to account, and challenge environmental racism and injustice on the ground. It works to support and link people’s struggles to realise their constitutional right to an environment that is not harmful to their health and well-being.

We don’t post enough about , and that’s probably because she’s usually the one documenting everything we do over here at New Noise. So on this Friday, during Women’s Month, and around five years after she officially joined the company, there’s no better time than the present to change that.

Some clichés exist for a good reason. “Behind every successful man is a woman” truly rings true for me. Without Zweli’s support nine years ago, when I decided to break away and build something of my own, I wouldn’t have made it this far. She didn’t just support me; she decided to join me in my pursuits. Today, she’s not only a valuable part of the team but also a majority shareholder and co-director of New Noise. (And an amazing mother to our boy, Neo).

Zweli’s unwavering sense of style and laser-sharp discernment give her all the tools she needs to be an excellent Creative Director and designer. She is a true leader who doesn’t even need to try, or sometimes, believe she can be. I am grateful to call her my partner in life and in business, and I’m excited to see what the future has in store for us as we pursue our personal and professional dreams.

Wrapped up! Our work on this year’s Durban Film Mart is complete. It’s our second year defining and deploying an intense digital marketing campaign for this powerful film industry event, and this time, we also ran the socials over the 4-day event.

Huge thanks to our team for all the effort they poured in, and a shoutout to the rest of the core members not pictured here: Mia (.sa), Lindo, and Wanele – who were fundamental to the success of this project.

We were stoked when the owners of the entrusted us with their rebrand, which happened in conjunction with their 16-year business anniversary.

Bean Green lacks pretence in an industry that has no shortage of it, so we wanted to channel their laid-back, unfiltered vibe into a fresh identity that has a genuine character and sense of humour.

As with many other Durban spaces, the café is a hidden gem, having been at the forefront of the local scene before gourmet coffee consumption became ingrained in our lifestyles.

More significantly for us, Bean Green is a place where we secured some of our first-ever clients shortly after registering as a business.

The title of the show, "Ubhuti Ontsundu" is a track by South African artist OkMalumKoolKat, featured on his 2016 album Mlazi Milano. The song's title and thematic resonates with themes of identity and self-perception. Lyrically, the song delves into the complexities of black identity, self-worth, and the societal challenges faced by black individuals and the broader collective. It encourages listeners to embrace their heritage and take pride in their spiritual identity.

There are a lot of things that motivate each one of us daily, but core to our values at New Noise Studio, and the reason why we do what we do, is that we are dedicated to crafting impactful design for a responsible and conscious world.

Good design can serve many purposes, but most importantly, it is a powerful tool that can shape perceptions, ignite change, and drive progress.

There's still have a lot of room to improve, but our aim is to create designs that, aside from making a visual impact, carry a purpose. That purpose being that our work can contribute to a more conscious and compassionate society, one that stands to benefit rather than harm our planet and all of its inhabitants.

Every action counts for something: Start a zero-waste movement at home and in the office. Separate your waste properly. Support The Litterboom Project, sign the Clean Creatives pledge.

We are excited to be working in the direction of what we truly care about: a sustainable future for all!

Shoutout to these 2 legends! 🙌🏽

Lindo (who happens to be celebrating his birthday today 🥳) started working with us 2 years ago - joining New Noise as we finalised the move into our current studio space.

Lindo is the studio “rock” - he guides us through our daily stand-ups and quietly makes sure our financial affairs are in order - we’re grateful for your consistency and unflappable character, and look forward to growing with you.

Wanele is celebrating 1 year with us this month! ✨

Wanele’s love for design and creative expression clicked with our studio culture and values from day 1, and aside from serving an exceptional musical offering with his collective .n.vibes, he has became a core member of the team, working on countless different brands and projects since joining New Noise, showing growth and greater potential on every project.

Gents, we are super proud of both of you and what you bring to the table every day, and are excited about another year of [you know what 🤭] as a team.

Congrats!

🖤 Zweli

And just like that, we've reached the middle of what feels like the longest month of the year, and South African kids are heading back to school tomorrow. Parents can breathe a sigh of relief!

For this BFirst by Bata production, our team aimed to create a library of images for the brand's digital platforms. We sought to visually encapsulate the joyful and dynamic spirit of young children as they anticipate their first day back at school. These images subsequently served as supporting materials for BFirst's 'Face Your Firsts' back-to-school campaign in 2024.
