Morning dear African film & TV fans. I wish to bring something to your attention. In a workshop, one attendee once asked me "Why is it that in South Africa we don't make high-end series like Game Of Throne, maybe that can win over many people to watch local productions..." I responded in one word before going into detail - BUDGET. All international productions, be it a TV series or movie have good budgets (which we usually mistaken for "high" budgets). When making a film, budget is critical because if you give a good filmmaker proper budget, they are able to do more. In SA and probably the rest of Africa, filmmakers have to be selective of the stories they produce, one must do a story that can be done with certain budgets - which is usually awfully low, hence so many romantic comedies, actionless dramas. It is unfortunate that a movie ticket in cinemas is flat priced whether you watching Marvel's Avengers or a local production. I must agree that an international movie is 'value for money' for most as they'll watch a film that's well done; after all they had all the necessary funds. Here is a scenario; Peter Dinklage is said to have been taking home about $500,000 (R7.3m) per episode of GoT, meaning he took $3.5m (R51.2m) for the final season 8. Now in SA one is expected to make a good movie with R7m. For R50m budget on a movie, many will begin question your sanity. Lastly, when you go to the movies this weekend, just remember, any money you spend on an international production means you are NOT SUPPORTING YOUR OWN, you are exporting your money and supporting another industry that cares very little about Africa but just to exploit and profit from it. When are our local artists going to truly be paid what they are worth? Some of our actors are now crossing boarders, heck even some filmmakers are shooting movies and series for just the international market because there's less support for local productions.... FB had asked 'what's on my mind'.
