Nyala Pans 4X4 Trails.
Yesterday we decided to go and checkout the Nyala Pans 4X4 Trail situated in the Umkomazi valley.
Access to the venue is off the R56, midway between Richmond and Ixopo.
The trail begins at the Long Pool Camp site which is set along the banks of the Umkomazi river. Due to time, we only managed to drive part of the mountain trail, which took us about 2.5 hours including photo stops along the route.
We would describe this trail as a relaxed drive which leads almost to the top of a mountain via a marked route through mostly grassland.
The host, Shannonne, was very friendly and we will definitely revisit to explore the rest of their 4X4 trails, especially the new route which they have planned that would incorporate a crossing of the Umkomazi river.
Closest towns - 35 kms to Richmond or 48 kms to Ixopo.
Trail options - a number of different 4x4 trails with approx 40 kms in total overall distance.
Trail difficulty - grade 1-3.
Cost - R100 per vehicle + R60 per adult. Cash only.
Braai areas - designated braai areas along the river.
Camping - non electrified campsites along the river.
Ablutions - yes.
Other activities - fly fishing, hiking, kayaking.

5 drivers from Durban drove the infamous 26 km Baboon Pass trail in Lesotho Saturday 15 Sept. The trail proved to be very tough on both driver and 4X4 and definitely lived up to its reputation as being one of the most difficult 4x4 trails in Southern Africa.

Section 3 is the most difficult section on this route as it involves negotiating your 4X4 through a rocky fast flowing river. Not for the faint hearted.
The RED TRAIl now enters a narrow eroded passage. It been winter there was not much water but during the rainy season its definitely going to get much more difficult to traverse. The exit out of this eroded tunnel is just as tricky as it involves driving out a very sandy and steep ascent.
First drive of The RED 4X4 TRAIL at the Thrill Seeker Offroad Park, Shakaskraal. Some of the local 4X4 enthusiasts spent their Sunday testing their 4X4 driving skill. 5 hours to drive less than 5km's attests to the difficulty of this trail which is basically made up of 5 sections. Below are some pics of the first of these sections - The FOREST AREA. We will post pics of the other sections shortly. We welcome experienced 4X4 drivers that are keen on completing this new route. BEWARE - recovery gear is a must.

Drivers that opted for the green gates bagged 50 points per gate whilst drivers that opted for the more difficult red gates bagged 100 points per gate. A few of us tested the newer 4X4 trails this past Tuesday at the THRILL SEEKER MOTORING AND ADVENTURE PARK AT MUCEIRA FARM, SHAKASKRAAL and it turned out to be a STUCKFEST of note. However, we still had great fun. Official opening is set for 16 June 2018. Come and check for yourselves!!!!
