The early Christian missionaries who ventured into the semi-desert regions of South Africa’s Northern Cape were of hardy, pioneering stock from major European capitals who survived incredible hardships in this great thirstland. The stories of these missionaries, who include the renowned Robert Moffat and David Livingstone amongst their ranks, unfold against a harsh, dry landscape of rugged beauty. They were doctors, engineers, carpenters and farmers who not only shared their skills with the locals but accomplished great fetes such as building a cathedral with nothing more than a picture as a guide, turned desert regions into fertile agricultural areas through innovative irrigation schemes, translated the bible into Tswana and shaped the minds of men who became great leaders such as Sol Plaatje, writer and founder of the African National Congress.

Durban's old Edward Hotel had a style fit for a king; in fact, it was named after a British monarch, Edward VII, and held its prestigious five-star position along Durban’s Golden Mile for most of its 111-year history. It hosted royalty and famous personalities and added lustre to the experience of many ordinary folk who reveled in its elegant decor and sumptuous food. Thousands of people spent memorable honeymoons and holidays there, and hosts of locals over the decades delighted in feasting at their world-class restaurants each with its own unique atmosphere – the Brassiere and its famous Peter Chen Chinese restaurants were places that would have created lasting memories for many diners.
