Proofs: Digital proofs. Printerโs proofs. Whatโs the difference?
Dive into the world of publishing with the concept of a "proof" - the tantalising sneak peek into an upcoming book's universe!
Have a look back at our Lingo post from March for a refresher on typesetting. Well, digital proofs are what you get from the typesetter to gauge the progress your book is making. This is the digital version of your book that will eventually be sent to the printer. You make corrections to these digital proofs until you arrive at your final digital proof.
Along the way, proofs offer an early glimpse into the literary magic before it's polished to perfection. These treasures gradually transform, mirroring the final masterpiece.
We then move on to the printerโs proof. Here we make sure everything has been calibrated correctly on the printer, pages have been collated correctly and in order, and that your book has not been bound upside down! Essentially weโre checking for printing accuracy.
At African Sun Media, we pride ourselves on providing perfect printerโs proofs due to our extensive digital proof inspection process. As a result, our sole mission after producing a proof copy of any given title is to ensure the highest possible print quality before proceeding with a full print run. At this stage weโre not really looking for textual errors (though we do of course check!).
So, if ever you find yourself in the magical world of publishing and you happen upon of a proof, remember that you're not just dealing with a book or a mere work-in-progress - you're holding the promise of the dissemination of knowledge!

Book Launch: 'Social Welfare and Social Work in Southern Africa'
Join the launch of 'Social Welfare and Social Work in Southern Africa'.
This book is written by Southern African social welfare, social work, social development, social security and social policy academics, practitioners and advocates who have varying degrees of experience. The authors who contributed chapters to this book added their perspectives to ongoing debates about academic areas in the region. Thus, the bookโs primary objective is to discuss the development of social welfare and social work in Southern Africa. In doing so, it endeavours to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on social welfare and social work in the region. The chapters are examined through different theoretical lenses and historical perspectives.
In this book, African scholars, academics, and practitioners provide a deep and critical reflection of social welfare, social work, and related disciplines during the colonial and post-colonial era, a period characterised by a deliberate move by Africaโs political administrations to focus on nation-building and to attempt to make Africa a global player. Despite being endowed with rich natural resources like minerals; agriculture; and solid family and extended family life, the continent is weak globally. Furthermore, the book focuses on the pre-colonial period โ a golden thread running through the chapters. The book discusses the colonial era when Western countriesโ capture and oppression of Africa characterised the continentโs history.
This book is an appropriate publication at this point in our history; a resource that can be used to generate appropriate narratives and questions within the social welfare and social development sector, particularly on delivery, education and training.

Book Launch: Multilingualism in Ancient Contexts
Join the Book Launch of 'Multilingualism in Ancient Contexts: Perspectives from Ancient Near Eastern and Early Christian Contexts'. Multilingualism remains a thorny issue in many contexts, be it cultural, political, or educational. Debates and discourses on this issue in contexts of diversity (particularly in multicultural societies, but also in immigration situations) are often conducted with present-day communicational and educational needs in mind, or with political and identity agendas. This is nothing new. There are a vast number of witnesses from the ancient West-Asian and Mediterranean world attesting to the same debates in long past societies. Could an investigation into the linguistic landscapes of ancient societies shed any light on our present-day debates and discourses? This volume suggests that this is indeed the case.
