Through its company based in Cape Town, Cambridge University Press South Africa publishes and sells school textbooks for local curricula across Sub-Saharan Africa. We publish school textbooks and learning resources in print and digital, and in multiple languages, including all 11 official South African languages. We also pursue an extensive programme of mother tongue publishing for countries acros

s the continent, producing titles in over 34 local African languages under joint imprint with local agents in each country.A wide range of Cambridge International Education titles and academic textbooks are also distributed. Our energetic local publishing programme has published several thousand titles by African authors since the establishment of the Branch in 1995. Some of our most recognised brands include Study & Master, Mental Maths, The Little Library, and Rainbow Reading. In collaboration with local educators and subject specialists, we offer Cambridge Teacher Training and the SACE-endorsed Cambridge Reading Workshops for professional development. We value and nurture our staff and suppliers, with long-standing relationships and service attesting to that. We also work with Cambridge CEM (Centre for Evaluation & Monitoring) assessments, turning data into action for true support of teachers and students, to make the best decisions to support learning based on the most robust evidence available. We are proud to be associated with the Thuto Trust - a shareholder of Cambridge University press - and are pleased that a portion of the selling price of every product sold by us is reinvested by the Trust to train, mentor and develop high-quality teachers.

Nurturing Young Learners: 10 Key Principles of Early Childhood Development

The “2024 South African Early Childhood Review”, published by the Children’s Institute University of Cape Town and Ilifa Labantwana in July 2024, emphasises the importance of quality learning materials and structured early learning environments towards fostering cognitive and social development in our youngest learners.

What are some of the key principles that support a sound ECD programme?

1. Social and Cultural Contexts Matter
Children’s learning and development are deeply influenced by their social and cultural backgrounds. Understanding these contexts allows educators to create meaningful learning experiences that resonate with each child’s unique identity.

2. Active Engagement is Key
Children learn best when they are actively involved in their learning. Well-planned activities should centre around fostering feelings of competence and self-worth.

3. Holistic Development Approach
A balanced approach to education is crucial. Physical, cognitive, language, and social-emotional development should be integrated to ensure that children grow in all areas of their lives.

4. Play-Based Learning
Play-based learning is a child-centred approach that encourages exploration and creativity, allowing children to learn through play while developing critical thinking skills.

5. Self-Regulation and Emotional Awareness
Supporting children in developing self-regulation and emotional awareness is vital. Children need to be able to reflect on their learning and emotions to foster resilience and independence.

6. Language and Communication as Foundations
High-quality interactions and adult modelling are essential for language development. A good ECD programme in South Africa should factor in multilingual learning contexts, and learning in a language that is not the child’s mother tongue.

7. Mathematics as a Core Component
Mathematics learning should be integrated throughout an ECD programme, helping children develop essential mathematical language and thinking skills from an early age.

8. Importance of Early Assessment
Systematic observation and assessment are fundamental to understanding each child’s progress. Using various types of assessment allows educators to adjust their lesson plans to individual learners’ needs, and the wider group.

9. Social Learning Skills
Whether in an ECD centre or a home-learning environment, social skills are crucial for children’s development towards school readiness and beyond. Children need to build friendships and learn to work collaboratively.

10. Smooth Transitions to Primary School
A good ECD programme supports children in making successful transitions to primary school, focusing on foundational skills and gradually introducing more formal teaching methods.
