We loved facilitating creative workshops at the Adaptation Network Colloquium.
The most amazing collaborative artworks on Climate Adaptation came out of this session. Some profound experiences were shared ,as it's not always easy releasing to a white page and paintbrush if it's not something previously explored. For others the letting go that happens in a collaboration was a big experience ... And then one team shared a beautiful reflection - they'd been last to collect materials, and most of the colours, paints and khokhis were gone ...and so they had much thinner pickings to work with... But they joyfully found when their work cycled back to them, what had started with egg boxes, string and toilet rolls, was now connected with vibrant colours others had added ... This was a reminder of the power of working together as a society, by supporting each other and filling in the gaps as we each bring our own stengths, skills and resources.

On 10 May, we held our Co-operative AGM, celebrating six years of operation. We reflected on our journey so far and envisioned our future direction. We discussed our operational strategy, reviewed financial reports, voted on roles and responsibilities, and explored topics around feminism and diversity. We also delved into Water Stories, one of our flagship projects.

This week, our Mycelium Network held its first AGM, with 20 members in virtual attendance. We had an in-depth discussion about what a co-op is, how they operate, and their potential for creatives to collaborate on regeneration and transformative change. We also celebrated the fact that we now have many more members in and around Johannesburg, which means there will be more opportunities for in-person mixers. 💚

On Wednesday last week, we lost one of our own.
Liezel Vermeulen has been a bedrock component of Mycelium since we started. As our communications co-ordinator, she seamlessly ran our social media, collated our newsletter, supported in the production of our videography and broadcast work and provided the calmest rock in a storm. Despite her health challenges, she was always available to take on any task, and carried on a full professional life as a producer, mentor, consultant and managed the communications and newsletters for a number of professional organisations in South Africa.
She will be sorely missed by all of us at Mycelium, many of us also had a close personal relationship with her. She had patience, professionalism generosity, an incredible media industry knowledge, and a wonderful sense of humour.
She impacted many people, as a colleague and friend. We will miss her... We express our deep condolences to her family, and all those close to her. ❤️

Mycelium Media Cooperative brings together the talents, skills, resources and energy of multimedia artists, storytellers and communicators committed to the realisation of a sustainable, regenerative vision for South Africa and the planet.
Our aim is to help create and support a collaborative communication and distribution network of people and organisations working in the regenerative space. This innovative platform hosts a multimedia content creation hub based on collaborative, participatory values.
The cooperative provides a networking and support space for members and affiliates, as well as income-generating opportunities through the creation, distribution and/or exhibition of content that brings to life a regenerative vision across the media spectrum.
We also aim to help young talent grow their skills and make the necessary contacts to enter the workspace and share their regenerative stories.
Ownership of projects is shared between the creators and the cooperative, which provides the following benefits, among others, to members:
Networking, development and training opportunities
Expanded pool of talent to draw from for large projects
Ability to access opportunities beyond the reach of the individual freelancer
Opportunities for employment within the cooperative itself
Potential to negotiate discounts to conferences, seminars etc.
Potential to offer multi-disciplinary courses to learning institutions
A library of media material to use in projects
Potential to grow a library of equipment and resources for use by members
Networking to different platforms for extended reach
A formal structure through which to raise funding for projects
There are seven founding members involved in setting up and growing the cooperative. Membership, however, is open to all multimedia storytellers, artists and regenerators that share our vision of bringing about collaborative and transformative change.
If you are a content creator and work in or want to work in the sustainability and regenerative space or have a great story to tell about creating the world we are dreaming of, contact us.
