My depression turned out to be ADHD!
'My depression turned out to be ADHD!', says NGO literacy consultant Hazel. Watch our authentic interview to find out more 😀
Diagnosed at 59 with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), Hazel was finally able to come off the anti-depressants she'd been taking to cope with feeling bad about the 'chaos' in her life.
'Once I knew I had this condition, it helped me stop blaming myself. I found strategies and medication to push back at the chaos, find calm, keep track of things and achieve what I felt I was capable of,' she says.
Hazel went on to live 'probably the most productive year of my life'.
Very sadly, shortly after we filmed this interview, Hazel died from a stroke, so we did not feel it appropriate to publish this interview on our social media. But today her sister Colleen is happy for us to share it with you to celebrate Hazel, who would have been 61 today, and to help others. 'Many people have found this video very helpful,' says Colleen.
Happy birthday, Hazel! We're so glad your last year on earth was so happy and we believe that you're now with God, of whom you said, 'I know that He loves me and that my life is of significance [to Him].'
Says sister Colleen: 'We miss Hazel all the time, her warmth and generosity, her quirkiness and boundless creativity. Her life was an incredible gift to all who knew and loved her.'

Ndlovu Youth Choir wows Cape Town
Yoh yoh yoh! The Ndlovu Youth Choir wowed Cape Town out of its socks last night at the start of its three-day run at the Artscape Theatre.
The powerful harmonies and youthful zest of these inspiring young people from a tiny village in Limpopo were a tonic and a half for a city that craves one, and showed exactly why the choir reached the finals of America's Got Talent in pre-Covid times and were signed up by impressario Simon Cowell.
'Imagine if we all helped just one young person,' said Ralf Schmitt, the choir's energetic conductor and co-founder.
Imagine indeed 🙂

Little house in Cape Town offers sustainable hope!
'If we have problems, we sit down, we discuss. It's a nice place to be. I'm developing myself, saving my own money and am able to move out soon. It's positive!'
Meet Michael, whose life has been transformed by a little NPO in Cape Town's Muizenberg called New Hope SA. It's been home for him and a group of homeless men while it lovingly creates sustainable pathways out of homelessness.
PLUS, meet Richard, its inspiring founder. 'Our goal is for people to find jobs and we've been blessed with a lot of success,' he says.
'I'm the one who benefits from seeing their resilience,' says Charlie, supervisor of the home that's an oasis to the men. 'It's super rewarding.'

Cape Town film school's generosity offers hope to a challenged community!
'I’m not sure with hindsight we knew how big a challenge it would be. Our house was broken into 18 times, and once all my camera and computer equipment was stolen by local gangsters, leading to a day of visiting all the gang leaders with our friends Keeba and Dowayne to ask for it back,' says Nick Lear, founder of Manenberg Films.
👉 Despite challenges such as these, the film company has survived and is able to offer free training to the residents of Manenberg and give them a chance to tell their stories 🙌
👉 Watch this inspiring video and please share it on your page. We'd LOVE you to help us spread the hope across Cape Town and beyond!

From mess to belonging
'Life was just a mess!'
We're back with another episode of Places with a Purpose. This time we visit Tom Ro Haven for Equines and Children in Cape Town's Noordhoek set up by mother and daughter Gill and Steph in response to some personal tragedies.
It's exploded purpose into their messy lives, and brought them comfort as they help other humans and horses who've been badly treated or simply lost their mojo ❤
Don't miss this redemptive story of healing that we filmed in partnership with Manenberg Films.

Kindly South African!
Remember the article we posted during the peak of lockdown about KC Car Wash?
It's a story that restores hope in humanity - about two people responding to job losses threatening a group of vulnerable car guards by helping them in a sustainable way.
'We like to refer to our employees as our friends, people we want to sustain and support,' says Mike Kane, co-founder of KC Car Wash.
If you haven't done so yet, read the full article here: bit.ly/35Cb91P 😀

Here’s some great news for your Monday! Thanks to the generosity of people who saw our recent appeal on this page, plus other well wishers, Nurse Thandi of Bambo Children's House can now cook for the children in her charge on a properly functioning stove 🙌
You may remember that Thandi was having to prepare food for 21-odd people on the one working ring of her old stove.
Bambo House in Cape Town’s Philippi is home to around 14 children with mental, physical or social challenges.
Thank you so much to all those who contributed. It’s so great to realise you can make a difference to someone’s life ❤️

Paddle with a purpose: Cape Town's Richard heads for Brazil!
And off he went into the blue yonder!
Cheered on by friends, well-wishers, fellow paddlers, admirers and a slightly nerve-wracked family, Richard Kohler yesterday paddled out of Cape Town's Granger Bay headed for... Brazil! 🇧🇷
He aims to get there by paddling 18 hours a day for at least 70 days.
No one's ever accomplished this feat. Richard (52) has been planning this trip for five long years, and is attempting it in aid of Operation Smile 😀
