The Beloved Prophet - An Illustrated Biography in Rhyme is a publication that took four years to complete. It tells the life story(or seerah) of the last prophet, Nabiy Muhammad ﷺ , entirely in rhyme. Rich, striking illustrations accompany the text, animating the story.
“I attempted to give new form to an existing story, to create a reflective and meditative space of the Prophet’s exemplary life by merging poetry and art,” explains Zaahied Sallie, the author.
Sallie adds that the Prophet ﷺ lived at a time when the Arabic language reached its zenith in poetry. It was an art form “that drew the listener in, moving and inspiring…the setting was perfect for the noble Qur’an to win over hearts.”
“Using poetry allowed me to create a brief story, but with depth – found in the undertones and evocative use of language.”
The book comprises fifty-two chapters, each with its corresponding artwork, 624 stanzas and 2,496 verses.
This video captures the launch of this epic publication held at the Academia Library in Cape Town, South Africa, in late 2021.
Former South African ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, was one of the keynote speakers.
He described the publication as “bold and audacious,” and “the thinking person’s biography... as it challenges the reader.”
Other keynote speakers included Shaykh Sharif Banna, chairman of Claritas Books, as well as Saaid Rahbeeni, the artist behind the skillful illustrations.

The great Battle of Badr, also known as The Day of Criterion, took place on 17 Ramadān, 2AH.
Won by the Muslims against a powerful Quraysh army, the victory was a decisive turning point in the history of Islam.
The following stanzas from The Beloved Prophet - An Illustrated Biography in Rhyme, capture the momentous event:
The scene fell motionless with a worried calm
A piercing arrow would unleash the storm
Muslims charged; stormed the gates of Heaven
Believing that martyrdom led to all sins forgiven
Gaining the power of ten, an unbending force
To victory they fought, their Creator the source
Ranks upon ranks, soldiering in battle as in prayer
Muslim mettle; striving to be God’s legionnaire
