On November 5, 1940, the eastbound convoy HX 84 consisting of thirty-seven merchant ships, escorted by the armed merchant cruiser HMS Jervis Bay, came under attack in the mid-Atlantic by the German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer. Captain Edward Fegen, in command of the Jervis Bay, bravely charged at the enemy despite being hopelessly outgunned, and was ultimately destroyed by the Scheer’s 11-inch guns.

As the merchantmen of HX 84, led by the commodore ship Cornish City, attempted to evade the radar-equipped Admiral Scheer under the cover of a smoke screen, they were systematically targeted and destroyed one by one. Captain Hugh Pettigrew of the Canadian Pacific cargo liner Beaverford engaged in a desperate game of hide and seek with the Scheer, ultimately sacrificing his ship with no survivors. Thanks to his bravery, only four other merchant ships were sunk.

The neutral flag Swedish freighter Stureholm, under the command of Captain Olander, performed a courageous rescue mission, saving survivors from the Jervis Bay. Without this selfless act, there would have been no survivors to recount the harrowing events of the Jervis Bay, for which Captain Fegen was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

Regrettably, the sacrifices of the Beaverford and the Stureholm are often overlooked in historical accounts. This compelling book aims to set the record straight and honor the bravery and sacrifices made during this tragic event.

Despite the significant time and resources invested in this policy, it ultimately proved ineffective. In 1938, when put to the test, the equipment was found lacking and the strategy flawed. The Air Staff had misled the government, deceived themselves, and left the nation vulnerable. However, amidst this failure, there remains a glimmer of hope. Unintentionally, the Air Ministry had been developing aircraft that could potentially still safeguard the country.
