Nissan, Honda, and Mitsubishi Motors sign Memorandum Of Understanding on collaborative considerations

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. ("Nissan"), Honda Motor Co., Ltd. ("Honda"), and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation ("Mitsubishi Motors") have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore the possibility of Mitsubishi Motors’ participation, involvement, and synergy sharing in relation to the business integration through the establishment of a joint holding company outlined in an MOU signed between Nissan and Honda.

Nissan, Honda, and Mitsubishi Motors have reached a basic agreement to proceed with discussions based on the framework established in the MOU (Memorandum Of Understanding) signed by Nissan and Honda on August 1 regarding the commencement of a strategic partnership focused on intelligence and electrification. Mitsubishi Motors has been participating in this framework, and the three companies have been proceeding with discussions.

Following the agreement between Nissan and Honda to start consideration toward a business integration through the establishment of a joint holding company amid the dramatic changes in the environment surrounding both companies and the automotive industry, the three companies have agreed to explore the possibility of achieving synergies at an increased level through Mitsubishi Motors’ participation or involvement in the business integration. Mitsubishi Motors aims to reach its conclusion by the end of January 2025 on the participation or involvement in the business integration between Nissan and Honda.

Marking the announcement, Nissan Director, President, CEO and Representative Executive Officer Makoto Uchida said: “Honda and Nissan have begun considering a business integration, and will study the creation of significant synergies between the two companies in a wide range of fields. It is significant that Nissan's partner, Mitsubishi Motors, is also involved in these discussions. We anticipate that if this integration comes to fruition, we will be able to deliver even greater value to a wider customer base.“

Honda Director and Representative Executive Officer Toshihiro Mibe said: "At this time of change in the automobile industry, which is said to occur once every 100 years, we hope that Mitsubishi Motors' participation in the business integration discussions of Nissan and Honda will lead to further social change, and that we will be able to become a leading company in creating new value in mobility through business integration. Nissan and Honda will start the discussion from today onwards with an aim to clarify the possibility of business integration by around the end of January in line with the consideration of Mitsubishi Motors."

Comment from Mitsubishi Motors Director, Representative Executive Officer, and President and CEO Takao Kato said: “In an era of change in the automotive industry, the study between Nissan and Honda about a business integration will accelerate synergy maximization effects, bringing high value also to the collaborative businesses with Mitsubishi Motors. In order to realize synergies and to make the best use of each company's strengths, we will also study the best form of cooperation.”

Nissan Africa opens state-of-the-art SSS facility in Senegal

Nissan Independent Markets Africa Managing Director Maciej Klenkiewicz and Japan Motors Trading Company Managing Director Salem Kalmoni officially opened a brand-new Nissan sales, service and spares centre in the Senegalese capital.

The US$9,5-million investment is the culmination of an almost three-year journey and fitting testimony to Nissan’s ongoing commitment to Africa and to West Africa in particular.

“We pride ourselves on the partners that we work with, and we have enjoyed a particularly fruitful and long relationship with Japan Motors, of more than five decades, which is the longest standing Nissan dealership in Africa,” said Klenkiewicz.

“Japan Motors have proven themselves and their commitment to us and the markets they serve many times over, and this new centre coming as it does in the wake of their new assembly plant in Ghana, speaks volumes about exactly that.”

Senegal, said Klenkiewicz, was becoming as important a West African vehicle market as Ghana itself. Where Japan Motors built a state-of-the art Greenfields automotive factory to assemble the all-new Nissan Navara pick up range which is built in South Africa.

Kalmoni agreed: “When we opened our branch here 10 years ago, we did so because we believed in the potential of Senegal and our faith in the country’s leadership and their plans.

“This centre, the only one of its kind outside of South Africa and North Africa, is proof of that belief and of our commitment.”

The new centre staffed by 48 people from technicians to salespeople is the first fully integrated facility that is fully compliant to the Nissan Retail Concept NEXT Global Dealer Facility design in sub-Saharan Africa.

The workshop covers 663 sq m with 20 bays and two truck pits with combined parking for 100 vehicles between the first floor and the roof top. Another unique feature is the special vehicle elevator that had to be installed, rather than building the more traditional ramp, to move vehicles from the ground floor to the various parking levels above.

For Japan Motors Senegal Managing Director Jamil Zoobi, the new centre is a key part of the company’s strategy to build back the Nissan brand in Senegal to its pre COVID19 levels when it was in the top three in the country.

“The centre creates a one stop shop, allowing an exceptional customer experience, saving them time while allowing them to relax in comfort while their vehicles are being serviced to world class standards using the best parts.”

MG is making its return to South Africa in the new year, by introducing three new models to the market.

Although MG’s marketing is spearheaded by the Cyberster - a drop top fully electric roadster - we feel that our attention should steer towards the two SUV models. The ZS and HS.

MG South Africa Reveals its New Model Line-Up

The countdown has begun for one of the most anticipated events on the automotive calendar – the official introduction of MG to South Africa.

The timing could not be more fitting. Just over one hundred years ago, MG pioneered the creation of the popular sports car, giving millions around the world an attainable slice of MG magic. When Morris Garages was created by British motoring pioneer William Morris, it was his General Manager Cecil Kimber, who was working behind the scenes to produce faster cars with a sportier look. To do this, Kimber re-bodied and tuned up contemporary Morris car models. Its first model was the 14/28 Super Sports. With a top speed of 65mph (104,6km/h), the car was the existing Morris Oxford fitted with a two-seater body. For a comprehensive timeline of MG’s 100-year history please go to https://www.mg.co.uk/mg-centenary

In 2024 MG celebrated the indomitable spirit that has defined the iconic British brand for more than ten decades. Now, as we enter 2025, MG is the strongest it’s ever been.

This evolution of the brand gained significant momentum in 2007 when SAIC Motor (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation), a Chinese carmaker based in Shanghai, became the custodian of the revered MG octagon and it finally received the R&D boost it deserved, to not just survive but thrive.

MG vehicles are designed and developed by SAIC, and manufacturing mainly takes place at SAIC's plants in China. Additionally, SAIC produces MG vehicles in Thailand, India, Indonesia, and Taiwan for their respective regional markets. From an R&D perspective, MG is still heavily invested in the UK. In 2018 the company opened SAIC DESIGN ADVANCED LONDON in the heart of the UK Capital. The London studio allows MG to focus on innovative design concept studies and pre-concepts for future production projects by using state-of-the-art digital modelling before they are turned into more costly physical models.

From a sheer numbers point of view, MG has become the largest single-brand car exporter from China since 2019. In 2023, MG Motor sold approximately 840,000 vehicles globally, with 88 percent of those sales coming from markets outside of China. And in its birthplace, the UK, MG has held the title for the fastest-growing automotive brand for the past two years.

According to Mr Sky Zhang, the General Manager for MG Motor South Africa, “we are confident MG will perform just as well in the local market, which is why we are launching initially with 25 dealers – and with plans for more over the next two years.”

One of the reasons Zhang ascribes to MG’s success is, “we understand that driving preferences vary significantly across regions, and we've placed a strong emphasis on tailoring our offerings to meet the specific tastes of local consumers, engineering these likes and dislikes into our design and engineering processes. This makes MG so much more than just an affordable car; it stands out as a brand designed for mainstream markets with a unique identity.”

MG’s product development focuses on three pillars: “fun to drive, vigorous design, and Hi-tech futuristic”. A user-centred differentiated development strategy is adopted, backed by SAIC’s strong R&D and systemic capabilities, to meet the local needs and standards. In a nutshell, MG launches localised products and services, employing localised marketing communication and service strategies to provide the highest quality automotive products and mobility services to consumers.

“MG is 100% committed to the South African market. Backed by SAIC Motor, the largest automotive manufacturer in China and ranked among the Fortune Global 500, MG has a robust foundation for sustainable growth. The brand's arrival in South Africa is a strategic long-term investment. SAIC’s infrastructure and resources are dedicated to ensuring local stability, from comprehensive service and support networks to a firm investment in local job creation and partnerships. Our goal is to make MG a reliable presence in South Africa and provide our customers with peace of mind, knowing that they can count on MG for years to come,” Zhang notes.

Proof of this commitment is the priority MG has placed on establishing a sound parts supply chain in South Africa. The company’s National Parts Distribution Centre is already in place in Isando, Kempton Park. And through SAIC’s extensive global network, a steady, locally available inventory of high-quality parts has already been sourced to minimise downtime and deliver efficient servicing.

Reinforcing this commitment to quality and reliability, MG will offer a class-leading warranty and comprehensive service plan, providing customers with absolute confidence and peace of mind.

“Our goal is to set a new standard for after-sales support and reliability in the South African market, emphasising MG’s long-term commitment to its customers here,” Zhang concludes.

MG Reveals its New Model Line-Up

“Offering the right product at the right price is crucial in a highly competitive market like South Africa. In that regard, MG has got the formula just right,” states Mr Sky Zhang the General Manager for MG Motor South Africa.

“The ZS is the first of a raft of new models we will be launching. As an international bestseller with numerous awards across three continents under its belt, the ZS combines SUV practicality with a compact size and an affordable price tag. With over a million units sold, it features styling and driving controls refined in Britain to appeal to Western consumers, while boasting safety (standard with six airbags) and reliability in its DNA courtesy of its SAIC parent. This has resulted in a class-leading seven-year warranty that’s hailed as one of the best in the industry.”

The HS is the second model in MG’s SUV model lineup. Premiering at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, from a sizing and status perspective, the HS has a distinctly high-end appeal without the associated high price. In its previous incarnation, it built up an enviable reputation for reliability and low running costs; this latest generation adds style and refinement to the mix.

The HS features the now-characteristic ultra-slim ‘hammer-head shark’ front design that first appeared on the groundbreaking MG4, a model that garnered the trophy for the UK Car of the Year in 2023. It will be available with several powertrain options, including Hybrid variants. Initially, the HS will launch locally with the smooth and powerful 1.5-litre turbo engine as well as the just released 2.0-litre turbo powerplant. It was also just recently awarded five stars in the latest Euro NCAP test.

But the model that will reignite that classic MG passion is the remarkable all-electric Cyberster. It’s been described as a ‘thoroughly forward-thinking take’ on the traditional MG roadster and a fitting tribute to the pioneering sports cars that made MG a staple of the roadster market. As Zhang notes, “MG needed something very special to celebrate its centenary and the new Cyberster more than lives up to its sporting heritage”.

As to future model plans, Zhang is playing his cards close to his chest: “All I can say at this stage is that hatchbacks, hybrid and mainstream electric models are definitely on the cards for South Africa as we want our local customers to be able to access the latest in automotive innovation from MG. Watch this space!”

INTRODUCING FUSION FEST

A GAME-CHANGING CELEBRATION OF FUSING TOGETHER MUSIC, FASHION AND MOTORING

Mahindra South Africa is about to ignite a revolution in the festival scene with the launch of Fusion Fest, taking place on Saturday, 22nd February 2025 at the iconic SunBet Arena at Time Square in Pretoria.

For two decades, Mahindra has made South Africa its second home, forging an authentic and meaningful partnership with its customers. With over 100,000 customers joining the Mahindra family during this journey, this deep connection has solidified the brand’s trust and credibility in the region. These foundations give Mahindra the confidence to embark on an exciting new chapter as it steps into its third decade in South Africa.

This new era is about celebrating South Africa’s youthfulness, vibrancy, and cultural richness, embracing the diverse voices, traditions, and resilience that define the nation. The Mahindra Fusion Fest will embody this spirit, becoming a platform where music, fashion, and art come together to showcase the dynamism of the country and the brand’s vision for the future.

The Mahindra Fusion Fest is more than just a festival - it’s a cultural movement, uniting communities under one roof to honor South Africa’s diversity and creativity. Through groundbreaking musical collaborations, a bold fusion of fashion, and cutting-edge artistry, the event will celebrate the vibrant soul of the nation.

This festival represents Mahindra’s commitment to resonating with every tribe, culture, and belief system in South Africa, fostering a sense of belonging and togetherness. It is a fusion of perspectives, where the celebration of differences becomes a strength, creating a shared space for exploration, expression, and joy.

As Mahindra steps into this new chapter, the focus will be on democratizing technology while aligning with the passions and aspirations of South Africans. The recent launch of the XUV3XO exemplifies this, offering cutting-edge design and engineering that empower customers to rise to every challenge.

In parallel, the Fusion Fest will serve as a beacon of creativity and progress, reflecting Mahindra’s new approach as it evolves into a more youthful, dynamic, and culturally resonant brand. By integrating the values of resilience, innovation, and inclusivity, the festival signals what Mahindra will stand for in the years ahead.

The Mahindra Fusion Fest is a bold initiative designed to celebrate South Africa’s diversity through the fusion of music, fashion, and art. Each element of the festival highlights the richness of individual expressions, coming together in a shared celebration of creativity and culture.

THE MUSIC

At the heart of the festival are four electrifying fusion performances that will push creative boundaries, blending genres and cultures into groundbreaking collaborations. These performances bring together renowned artists from vastly different musical backgrounds, each creating something entirely new:

Fusion 1 - Cassper Nyovest (Hip Hop) X Zandile Mzazi (Opera) X Radio Kalahari Orkes (Afrikaans Country)

Fusion 2 - Sjava (Afro Pop) X Matthew Mole (Indie Pop) X Tarryn Lamb (Afrikaans Pop)

Fusion 3 - Mi Casa (Dance House) X Young Stunna (Amapiano) X K.O. (Hip Hop)

Fusion 4 - Kamo Mphela (Amapiano) X Sipho “Hot Stix” Mabuse (Afro-Jazz) X Aymos (Amapiano)

These collaborations will offer audiences a unique soundscape that blends genres and styles like never before, followed by individual performances of chart-topping hits from the iconic artists.

To amplify the celebration of creativity, Mahindra will launch a music talent search in early 2025. This initiative invites aspiring South African musicians to showcase their skills, with the winners earning the opportunity to perform on stage at the Fusion Fest. This underscores Mahindra’s commitment to discovering and nurturing local talent.

THE FASHION

Fashion at the Fusion Fest takes center stage as Mahindra collaborates with world-renowned designer Thula Sindi. His exclusive ‘Mahindra Line’ will debut at the festival, featuring a bold, modern collection inspired by the sleek designs and engineering of Mahindra SUVs. Festival Goers will also have the chance to purchase limited-edition merchandise designed by Thula Sindi, blending sophistication with South African heritage.

A fashion talent search will also kick off in early 2025, giving emerging designers the chance to showcase their creations at the event. This initiative highlights Mahindra’s dedication to uplifting local talent and fostering creativity across all platforms.

THE ART

Art becomes a unifying thread at the Fusion Fest, with a focus on innovation and expression. The festival will feature immersive installations and interactive exhibits that reflect the theme of fusion—blending tradition with modernity, and individuality with community. These artistic expressions will showcase the resilience and vibrancy of South African culture while incorporating global influences, creating a unique and dynamic celebration of creativity.

“The Mahindra Fusion Fest is more than just a festival—it is a bold statement of Mahindra’s evolution in South Africa. It reflects our commitment to embracing the vibrancy, diversity, and creativity of this incredible nation, our second home. Through this celebration of music, fashion, and art, we are creating a platform that unites communities, inspires innovation, and amplifies the voices of South Africa’s youth. As we step into our third decade, the Fusion Fest symbolizes the future of Mahindra—a future rooted in boldness, innovation, and a deeper connection with every individual who shares this journey with us,” stated Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa.

The Mahindra Fusion Fest is not just a one-time event - it is the beginning of a tradition that Mahindra envisions as an annual celebration of creativity and community. Through this platform, Mahindra aims to leave a lasting legacy, resonating with every tribe, culture, and belief system across the country.

With this event, Mahindra is carving out a unique space in South Africa’s cultural landscape, championing a bold vision that integrates vibrancy, innovation, and resilience.

Staying true to its commitment to giving back, Mahindra will donate a portion of ticket sales to a local community upliftment project. This initiative goes beyond just the festival, sparking social change, empowering the next generation of creators, and ensuring Fusion Fest leaves a lasting legacy that will impact lives long after the final performance.

Sharpened favourite: Audi South Africa confirms the local line-up of the upgraded A3

Popular Audi A3 range receives various cosmetic and convenience upgrades
Extended standard equipment is underpinned by a rationalised offering that makes it easier than ever for customers to specify their ideal A3
The A3 will be joined by sportier derivatives in due course; details of these models will be communicated early in 2025.

The Audi A3 Sportback and A3 Sedan head into 2025 with a sportier look, refreshed design elements and a rationalised range to make purchasing an A3 even more convenient and straightforward. In addition, the standard equipment tally has been expanded, new materials have been applied for increased comfort, and a highly specified and eye-catchingly designed Black Edition derivative will once again form part of the range.

Sportier than ever: the exterior

More dynamic. More progressive. More emotional. This is how the A3 Sportback and Sedan present themselves following this model upgrade. The hexagonal, frameless Singleframe features a new structure that is noticeably flatter and wider. It dominates the front end and, in addition to the large angular side air intakes, clearly symbolises the compact models’ sporty character. The striking front spoiler makes the Audi A3 appear lower.

Like the redesigned Singleframe, the lighting design is significantly thinner, emphasising the width of the Audi A3 series. The 24-pixel elements that make up the digital daytime running lights in the standard LED headlights are clearly visible to other road users, boosting safety, and offer the option of two additionally selectable (via the MMI) light signatures.

The same is true of the rear, which is more distinctive than ever with a refreshed bumper and distinctive diffuser. The progressive design elements are particularly effective with the standard-fitment S line exterior, as they are partly inspired by the RS models. The expressive new exterior colour, District Green, further strengthens the sporty look.

Significantly sharper: the interior

To match the more expressive exterior, the interior also presents itself in a significantly sharpened form. There are quite a few alterations, from the shifter design and air vents to the decorative fabric inlays and new interior lighting. All these elements are precise and detailed, and emphasise the vehicle’s progressive and technical look. Standard equipment has been significantly expanded: In addition to the three-spoke leather steering wheel with multifunction plus, the new A3 features ambient light package plus, comfort key and a panoramic glass sunroof that floods the cabin with natural light.

The new blade design, the outer surface of which is finished in chrome, makes the air vents in the climate control package appear thinner, emphasising the width of the cockpit. The centre console has been redesigned and given a new finish. The inside door handles feature a new effect finish, too. In addition to convenient cup holders, the centre console also comes standard with an integrated armrest, which can be moved front or aft and tilted. The compact shifter also features a new design; it blends seamlessly into the centre console.

Interior lighting adds accents to the doors and footwells. With the upgrade to the A3, contour lighting runs around the centre console and the cup holders. One new design element is that the front doors are broadly illuminated. The fabric panel was laser-cut 300 times to enable this feature. A light source in the door panel illuminates five segments from behind and displays a dynamic gradient due to their different sizes, which is also apparent when locking and unlocking the vehicle. The illuminated fabric panel combines clear functionality with a highly emotional design experience. Thirty colours are selectable via the MMI, enabling a high degree of personalisation.

The large speakers for the new standard-fitment SONOS sound system are fitted to the lower part of the doors, making for an immersive listening experience with 3D sound.

Two decorative inlays made from textiles are also new in the A3: a fabric with a technical structure made from 100% recycled polyester, as well as the microfiber material Dinamica. In addition to its use as a decorative inlay, Dinamica serves as a seat cover and adorns the door panels in some interior packages. It looks and feels like suede but consists of recycled polyester.

Available for order: the engine line-up and trim levels

For the time being, Audi South Africa will offer the A3 range only with the lauded 1.5-litre 35 TFSI turbocharged petrol engine developing 110 kW and 250 Nm of torque. It’s coupled with a slick-shifting seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission and a mild-hybrid system. Later in 2025, the range will be expanded with sportier derivatives.

As standard, the A3 35 TFSI Sportback and Sedan are offered in S line trim (lower-rung models fall away). Some of the highlights of the S line package are:

18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 225/40 R18 tyres
LED lights with dynamic turn signals
Convenience key
Lane departure warning
Parking assist with parking aid plus
Panoramic glass sunroof
Ambient lighting package plus
Sports steering wheel with flat bottom
Sports seats
Audi virtual cockpit
SONOS 3D premium sound system
Positioned above the S line is the Black Edition, which in addition boasts darkened trim on the grille, rings and side mirrors, as well as black 18-inch alloy wheels. Privacy glass is also included to round out the striking appearance.

Pricing for the new A3 range will be shared early in 2025. Like all Audi models, the A3 will be sold with a 5-year/100,000km Audi Freeway Plan comprehensive service and maintenance plan as standard.
