Thicket - Harry Owen

Thicket: shades from the Eastern Cape, Harry Owen’s ninth collection, is his most luminous and creative exploration so far of a theme that has always underpinned his poetry – the restorative power of nature, and of Africa in particular.

Comprising more than sixty poems inspired by the superb Eastern Cape of South Africa, Owen’s home for more than thirteen years, Thicket: shades from the Eastern Cape is both a celebration of that spectacular province, an appeal for its wealth of natural wonders to be preserved, and a passionate call for us all to recognize ourselves as a vibrant part of the earth’s future.

Outspoken in his commitment to the natural world, Harry Owen is author of eight collections and editor of three anthologies of poetry. Originally from Liverpool, he moved to South Africa’s Eastern Cape from UK in 2008, where he had been appointed the inaugural Poet Laureate for Cheshire in 2003. He has collaborated extensively with photographer Roddy Fox, combining poetry with photographic artistry, sound and video. Their work was the recipient of an Ovation Award at the 2020 National Arts Festival.

Harry now lives in Kylemore, near Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape winelands.

Die algehele wenner in die Liefde Wen-digkompetisie is Kenan Davis.

Davis (25) hou daarvan om stories te vertel. Hy skryf vandat hy 18 jaar oud is. In 2020 selfpubliseer hy 'n digbundel "Alles wat ek wou sê". Davis skryf onder die naam "Ontmasker" en het in die laaste twee jaar twee tienertonele saam met Stella Nortier geskryf.
Hy het teologie studeer, maar oorweeg om binnekort meer in die media-rigting te studeer.
Hy kom van Rustenburg af.

Davis is as die algehele wenner in die Liefde Wen-kompetisie aangewys met sy gedig "Mooi in die donker".

Dié kompetisie is vir die eerste keer in 2017 deur Bouwer Bosch en Almero Welgemoed geloods. Die kriteria is dat alle gedigte oor die liefde moet handel.
Die gedigte in vanjaar se bundel handel oor die liefde, die negatiewe, die positiewe, die pynvolle en die perfekte.

Women's Month is a month to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is also a month to reflect on the progress that has been made and the work that still needs to be done to achieve gender equality. One way to empower women is through the power of reading.
Reading has the ability to open up new worlds and perspectives, inspire and educate, and promote critical thinking and self-reflection. For women, reading can be especially empowering, as it can provide a sense of validation and representation, as well as offer a space for self-discovery and personal growth.
During Women's Month, it is important to recognize the role that books and reading can play in empowering women. This can include promoting books by female authors, highlighting books that feature strong female characters, and encouraging women to read and share their love of literature.

About the novel:

Lena Brown, a geneticist who spends her days in Cape Town comfortably engrossed in laboratory
work, receives a call to investigate an outbreak of madness amongst a group of men in a small town in rural Swaziland. She is excited to revisit the place of her childhood holidays. However, she does not realise how this journey will change her, challenging her beliefs and her perceptions of the world.

The novel is both a medical mystery and a love story.
Just before leaving Cape Town Lena meets the charismatic astronomer, Gabriel Powell, and finds herself attracted to the mystery which she senses within him. Circumstances intervene which force her to confront issues of trust and deception, secrets and loss.

The Veil of Maya slips between the worlds of Cape Town, Sutherland, Swaziland and England.
At its core it is a powerful story of love and life.

About the author:

Chantal Stewart is a novelist, poet and author. She has published poetry and short stories and has recently published her debut novel, The Veil of Maya. She has a full-time job as a doctor in a public hospital which keeps her busy when not writing.

The theme of the book, which is explored through six sections, is given in the title. The veil of Maya is a Buddhist/Hindu concept that we identify with thoughts, feelings, beliefs, opinions and so on, which distort actual reality.

The author explores this theme in the life of Lena, a geneticist who has been asked to investigate whether there is a genetic basis for an unusual cluster of symptoms in men from a village in Eswatini.
