Rieldans is the oldest form of indigenous dancing in South Africa.
Riel is a Khoisan word for an ancient celebratory dance performed by the San, Nama and Khoi. It is considered one of the oldest dancing styles of indigenous South Africa. Also known as Ikhapara by the Nama, it is danced at an energetic pace and demands a lot of fancy footwork.
This group, called ‘The Stoftrappers’, recently won a National competition. The rough translation of ‘Stoftrappers’ is ‘dust stamping’ and can be appreciated with the forceful downward action of the legs which resonates with the beat of the music.

The story of South Africa’s linocut print tradition has numerous roots and branches. It is anchored in the deep, rolling countryside where it produced art as a parallel to subsistent rural life and branched out into the townships as vibrant manifestation of political clout.
