"Intrepid Belgian boy reporter Tintin made his first-ever appearance on January 10, 1929, in an issue of Le Petit Vingtième, a children’s supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtième Siècle. His creator, the illustrator Hergé (the pen name of Georges Remi) was only 23 years old at the time, but Tintin would become the work of his lifetime, and grow into one of the most popular and beloved comics characters in the world"- information from Literary Hub. His books were much loved by my family and we avoided the contentious ones. What were your favourite books as a child?

Hornbills are a varied band of third-rate aviators. With supersized beaks, their trajectory is invariably downward and, when they do manage to grab hold of a perch, their flight is characterised by a comedic flair that makes every tree a stage. However, it is their particular brand of romance that makes them truly remarkable.

The famous staircase at the famous Shakespeare and Company book store in Paris. It was was opened by Sylvia Beach on November 19, 1919 on the rue Dupuytren. When the store outgrew its walls a few years later, she moved it to the rue de l’Odéon. From here, Beach published Joyce’s Ulysses, and here is where Joyce, along with Ernest Hemingway, Djuna Barnes, Ezra Pound, Anaïs Nin, Julio Cortázar, James Baldwin, and other luminaries, famously hung out.
This staircase features in one of the stories in the latest Jack Journal written by Lisa-Anne Julien.

Today is World Earthworm Day. In Jack Journal 4 we had a fascinating story about Charles Darwin's study of earthworms. In October 1881, Darwin published a book with the
rambling title 'The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through the Action of Worms with Observations on their Habits.' It was to be the foundation of modern soil science and much more.
Weighing their castings brought to the
surface, Darwin discovered that earthworms were the planet’s prime earth-moving equipment, bringing an annual average of up to 30 tons of soil to the surface across each hectare.
Illustration by Ludwig K Schmarda’s in his Journeys Around the Earth, 1861.

This photo: The Americans for Drum, September 1954. Photograph by Bob Gosani. The latest issue of Jack Journal has an article on the great photographers that worked at Drum magazine. This photo is one of my favourites. Don't you love the Cadillac? Sean O'Toole writes 'Recollections of Drum’s golden age (1951–58) tend to either foreground its astonishing literary accomplishments or alight on its succinct metropolitan photography.'

Dune by Frank Herbert was first published on 1 August 1965. I hauled out my battered 1980s copy of Dune- for me it was a brilliant read, especially as I had read almost no science fiction. Did you prefer the book or one of the movie versions? I almost always prefer the books to the movie versions and that was true for Dune too.
