Vumatel has stated it will launch 100Mbps uncapped fibre services in townships in South Africa.

The fibre service will provide a 100Mbps download speed and 10Mbps upload speed. The maximum contention ratio will be 20:1.

The fibre provider posted on its page that the service will cost R89 per month – with the first phase of the project set for Alexandra in Johannesburg.

The project is set to start before the end of 2017, with the aim of providing 60,000 homes with fibre before March 2018.

Fibre in the township will be aerial, as opposed to underground placement which takes place in city suburbs.

Vumatel said it will also build public Wi-Fi hotspots in the township, offering free Internet connectivity, and will continue to offer free 1Gbps Internet to schools it passes.

Despite the economic downturn, franchising in South Africa has remained resilient and has typically shown positive growth rates, according to Sybrand Bezuidenhout, business development manager for franchise services at the Barclays Africa Group.

Bezuidenhout notes that this is particularly true for the franchising services category, which comprises 27% of the total franchising industry and has a combined turnover on excess of R133 billion per annum.

“Historically, the franchising services sector has shown healthy growth despite challenging economic times,” she said. “All indications are that it will continue to grow and positively contribute to the economy – especially if franchisees focus on providing quality products and top-class customer service.”

Some of the most popular franchise service options in South Africa continue to be fast food restaurants.

These are some of the most popular fast food franchise restaurants in South Africa and how much they cost to franchise.

KFC – R6 million
(840 restaurants)

Despite KFC being by far the most popular fast food franchise in South Africa, it is not likely to increase its number of restaurants any time soon.

KFC South Africa brand owner, Yum International, has noted that the company is not currently looking for new franchisees.

However, existing KFC franchisees may elect to sell their businesses, and it is therefore possible to become a new KFC franchisee by purchasing an existing KFC business.

According to the latest franchise data available from KFC, new franchise owners could expect to pay close to R6 million for a new franchise.

With the only option to now buy a franchise from a current owner, perspective franchisees can expect this number to increase or decrease slightly depending on a number of factors such as location and demand.

Steers – R1.7 million
(542 restaurants)

One of the cheapest franchise options on the list, Steers franchisees can pay between R1.7 million – R2.5 million depending on the size and type of restaurants they want.

The initial franchise fee is R159,900 for a Standard Steers, while the fee for a drive-thru Steers is slightly increased at R175,700.

Approximate set up cost for a Standard Steers is R1,650,000 excluding VAT, joining fee and contingency. Set up cost includes equipment, shopfitting, wet works, furniture and fixtures.

In comparison, the approximate set up cost for a drive-thru Steers is R2,350,000.

In addition, Steers franchise owners are expected to pay 6% of their monthly turnover in royalty and 5% of monthly turnover for advertising .

Wimpy – R1.9 million
(492 restaurants)

New Wimpy Franchisees can expect to pay between R1.9 million – R2.5 million and an initial franchisee fee of R114,300 (excluding VAT).

Franchisees are also expected to pay 7% of their turnover in management fees and 5% of their turnover in royalties.

Debonairs – R800,000
(473 restaurants)

According to Debonair’s South Africa’s franchising documentation, new franchise owners can expect to pay between R800,000 – R1,400,000.

In addition, franchisees can expect to pay an additional R100,500 as an initial franchise fee.

Similar to other Famous Brand-owned restaraunts, franchisees are also expected to pay 7% of their turnover in management fees and 5% of their turnover in royalties.

Nando’s – R6 million
(300 restaurants)

More than any other restaurant, Nando’s gives perspective franchisees an almost exact breakdown of how much a new franchise is expected to cost.

The total amount of R6,060,000 (excluding VAT), is broken down into:

Franchise fee – R220,000
Restaurant design and set-up – R1,350,000
Design & Project Management – R430,000
Shop fittings – R1,185,000
Kitchen equipment – R1,300,000
Fixtures and fittings – R1,260,000
Point of Sale/Computers – R315,000
McDonald’s – R4 million
(241 restaurants)

According to McDonald’s South Africa, the cost of a franchise will vary, with actual costs only determined when an individual franchise is offered to an applicant.

The size of the restaurant, location, pre-opening expenses, inventory, selection of equipment, signage, seating and style of decor and landscaping will affect this cost.

This means that McDonald’s South Africa estimates the cost of a franchise to be anywhere between R4 million – R6 million, depending on the type of restaurant and other factors.

Applicants are are also expected to have a minimum of 35% of the purchase price of a restaurant in unencumbered, non-borrowed cash.

McDonald’s South Africa also does not allow partnerships or absentee investors of any kind.

Chicken Licken – R4.8 million
(240 restaurants)

The set up cost for a standard Chicken Licken store is R4.8 million with the cost rising to R6.8 million for a drive-thru restaurant, depending on a number of factors such as landlord contributions and the size of store you wish to build.

The initial franchise fee is R150,000.

Chicken Licken also requires a royalty fee payment (6%) and and advertising share (6%), accounting for 12% of the franchises’ monthly turnover.

A surge in Amazon.com Inc. shares Thursday morning in advance of the online retailer’s earnings report has propelled founder Jeff Bezos past Bill Gates as the world’s richest person.

Shares of the online retailer rose 1.3 percent to $1,065.92 at 10:10 a.m. in New York, giving Bezos a net worth of $90.9 billion, versus $90.7 billion for Gates. If that holds through the 4 p.m. close, Bezos, 53, will leapfrog Gates, the Microsoft Corp. co-founder, on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Gates, 61, has held the top spot since May 2013.

Investors and analysts, in addition to watching Amazon’s progress in taking market share in categories such as apparel and groceries, will be scrutinizing how many new subscriptions the retailer sold for its $99-a-year Amazon Prime service, which offers delivery discounts and video and music streaming. Prime shoppers spend more than customers who don’t have a membership.

“Amazon Prime is why so much physical retail is going away,” said Michael Pachter, a Wedbush Securities Inc. analyst who has a buy rating on the stock and a price target of $1,250. “Anyone who joins Prime shops in retail stores 10 percent less, and that number will keep accelerating as Amazon adds more inventory.”

Investors also monitor Amazon’s cloud-computing division, Amazon Web Services, a fast-growing and profitable business that accounts for about 10 percent of revenue. Amazon leads the cloud-computing industry, but faces increasing competition from Microsoft and Google parent Alphabet Inc.

Amazon is expected to post quarterly revenue of $37.2 billion, a 22 percent jump from a year earlier, according to the average estimate of 34 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg, and earnings per share of $1.42.

Meanwhile, Facebook Inc.’s intraday gains have helped pull co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, 33, within $200 million of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Chairman Warren Buffett, 86, who’s currently ranked fourth on the Bloomberg index with a net worth of $74.5 billion.

Bezos owns about 17 percent of Seattle-based Amazon, which has surged 40 percent this year through Wednesday, helping to add $24.5 billion to his net worth. He started 2017 as the world’s fourth-wealthiest person and has since surpassed Buffett and Inditex SA founder Amancio Ortega, 81, who ranks third with $82.7 billion.

ZZ2 is a South African farming enterprise operating mainly in the Limpopo Province, but also in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Gauteng and Namibia.

They produce tomatoes, avocadoes, mangoes, onions, garlic, dates, apples, pears, stone fruit, stud cattle and weaners.

The ZZ2 brand is a well-known icon in South Africa with a proud history.

The story of ZZ2

Willem, the Van Zyl ancestor from the Netherlands, worked as a fresh produce farmer for the Dutch East Indian Company in the Cape of Good Hope.

He was fired in 1702 due to insubordination.

He then bought a farm in Franschhoek where he farmed with fresh produce, wine and livestock.

His descendants left the Cape during the 1830s and eventually they settled in the region east of Polokwane.

After the Anglo-Boer War in 1902 a regulation came into play where farmers received a registered number (branding iron) with which to brand their livestock.

In 1903 the code ZZ2 was awarded to Burt van Zyl, grandfather of Bertie van Zyl – the founder of the ZZ2 farming enterprise.

ZZ2 was registered as a private company in 1966.

Today it’s a multi-million rand conglomerate.

Development firm FWJK has secured the rights to develop a new 70,000 square metre skyscraper in the heart of Sandton, pe***ng the cost at around R2 billion.

According to the firm, the project, dubbed ‘Northern Lights’, will see four 38 level towers feature on the Sandton skyline.

The new development is located in the banking node at the intersection of Fredman Drive and Rivonia Road and is situated between the Maslow Hotel and the Hilton Hotel.

Road upgrades planned to service the development will see a six lane extension of Fredman Drive constructed as part of the new mid-block road due to join Grayston Drive.

The top two floors will enjoy residential penthouse suites.

“Following the success of our R500 million Illovo Point development on Rivonia Road currently under construction, we have office end-users and investors lining up to secure space at cost which is roughly 20% to 30% below current market selling prices,” the group said.

According to FKWJK, the Sandton Central District continues to attract around twenty five new office tenant entrants each month, adding to the estimated 10,000 established businesses in Africa’s richest square mile.

Construction of Northern Lights is due to commence in the first quarter of 2018.

FORTUNE -- Cain and Abel. Romulus and Remus. Adidas and Puma? The rivalry between two of the world's most recognizable brands went far beyond mere corporate competition. It was a vicious family feud that not only pitted two brothers against one another, but also divided the inhabitants of their hometown into warring factions -- and lasted 60 years.

In the 1920s, the brothers were partners in the Dassler Brothers Sports Shoe Company, operating out of their mother’s laundry room in the small German town of Herzogenaurach. Adolf (“Adi”) Dassler was the quiet, thoughtful craftsman who designed and made the shoes, complemented by the older Rudolph (“Rudi”) who was the extroverted salesman. Although the brothers joined the N**i party when Hi**er seized power in 1933, it didn’t stop them getting legendary African-American track star Jesse Owens to wear their shoes as he competed and won four gold medals in the 1936 Olympics. Owens' victory gave the shoes international exposure, and sales of the Dasslers' product exploded.

But the success created new tensions in the brothers’ relationship, already strained by the fact that their families lived in the same villa despite their wives not getting along.

There were several incidents that were said to have precipitated their conflict, but the most widely accepted one took place during World War II when the Allies were bombing Herzogenaurach. As Adi and his wife climbed into a bomb shelter already occupied by Rudi and his wife, he exclaimed, “The dirty bastards are back again,” referring to the Allied forces. Rudi was convinced the remark was directed at him and his family. A feud -- one of the most epic and, well, Biblical in business history -- was born. (Not surprisingly Adidas vs. Puma is No. 20 on Fortune's list of the 50 greatest business rivalries of all time.)

When Rudi got called up for service, he suspected Adi and his wife had schemed to get him sent to the front so they could have him out of the way at work. Later, Rudi was arrested first for deserting his post and then by the Allies on suspicion of working for the Gestapo. On both occasions, Rudi was convinced that Adi was the one ratting him out, his suspicions confirmed by a report filed by an American investigating officer. While Rudi languished in a prisoner of war camp, Adi rebuilt the business, selling shoes to American G.I.s.

The conflict escalated as the brothers split the company in two in 1948, dividing the assets and the employees between themselves. Adi named his company “Adidas,” a combination of his first and last names. Rudi attempted the same by first naming his company “Ruda” but eventually changed it to the more athletic sounding “Puma.” The two built competing factories on opposite sides of the river Aurach and quickly became responsible for much of Herzogenaurach’s economy, with nearly everyone working for one company or the other.

As the entire town got caught up in the Dassler family feud, the rivalry reached ridiculous proportions. There were local businesses that served only Adidas or only Puma people, dating or marrying across company lines was forbidden, and Herzogenaurach became known as “the town of bent necks” since people first looked at which company’s shoes you were wearing before deciding to talk to you.
While Rudi had the sales staff and was better at moving product, Adi had the technical know-how and better relationships with athletes who could provide exposure, tipping the scales in favor of Adidas, with Puma constantly playing catch-up.

However, in focusing so heavily on each other, both the companies were slow to react to the threat of Nike (NKE, +0.49%), which would come to dominate the athletic footwear industry, leaving them far behind.

It wasn’t until 2009 when employees of both companies symbolized the end of six decades of feuding by playing a friendly soccer match. By then, the Dassler brothers had both died, within four years of each other. Even in death, the animosity continued as the brothers were buried at opposite ends of the same cemetery, as far away from each other as possible

Each phone comes with a number that makes it easy to locate a stolen device yourself.

Writing down your new cellphone’s EMEI number and keeping it in a safe place is an oft-neglected precaution that could help recover your phone after it has been stolen.

Each phone carries a unique IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity number) which can be used to track it anywhere in the world.

This allows you to discover the phone’s location without having to go to a police station.

This is how it works : -

1. Dial * #06 # from your mobile.

2. Your mobile phone shows a unique 15-digit number.

3. Note down this number at a secure place except in your mobile phone itself as this is the number which will help trace your phone in case of theft.

4. Once stolen, just email this 15-digit IMEI number to [email protected] with details as stated below: Your name, address, phone model, make, last used number, e-mail for communication, the date it went missing and the IMEI number.

5. Your mobile will be traced within the next 24 hours via a complex system of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Internet. You will find where your handset is being operated and the new user’s number will be sent to your e-mail.

6. After this, you can inform the police with the details you have.

According to Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, if the victim of a theft reports the stolen device and provides police with details of its location, they will act on that information and investigate.

Still struggling to find employment or sn**ch your dream job? All your efforts that constantly prove to be in vain and the rejection that comes with it, can take its toll on a jobseeker: unemployed or in search of greener pastures. The problem usually lies with your approach as a jobseeker. There are many aspects involved in the recruitment process that may seem insignificant but could hinder your chances of getting that call.

Your CV is a pivotal determining factor. Although sending off an impressionable CV does not guarantee your place in the company, it does get you to the next step in the recruitment phase. Recruiters are bombarded with piles of CVs. In many instances, CVs gets scanned by recruiters for literally a few seconds. If your CV is not up to standard it would only get that few seconds of recognition before being tossed in the trash. Your CV is the first contact with the company you desire to work for – and first impressions count. Draft your CV accordingly, do not exceed more than 3 pages and make sure that you use information that is most relevant to the position that you applying for. Check for spelling and grammar, also take note of the tone of language used when writing motivational letters – do not be over the top but also make that good impression.

Another possible hindrance is neglecting to follow up. Sitting and waiting for the phone to ring or an email to appear won’t help. Admin glitches or miscommunication happens in a recruitment agency, and your lack of persistence could prove even more unfortunate. It is important to follow up when handing in your job application – especially when you do not receive confirmation that your application has been submitted. By making the necessary enquiries you can safeguard a possible spot in the recruitment phase.

Recruiters seek candidates who are most suitable. If recruiters hold the slightest doubt about a candidate’s ability to hold the position, the candidate would get ruled out. Criteria include level of experience, qualification, flexibility in terms of working hours or ability to perform duties outside the job profile, to name a few. Before applying for a job post, be honest with yourself about how well suited you are for the job. Be realistic about the criteria involved. Too often jobseekers apply for posts in the hope that their lack of experience or qualification would be overlooked.

Lastly, the interview is the main determining factor during the recruitment process. Your interaction with recruiters face-to-face can either strengthen or weaken your chances of landing the job. Some negative behaviour that is off-putting for a recruiter includes a candidate’s inability to make small talk and displaying unattractive habits. The manner in which you carry yourself during an interview is of utmost importance. A candidate’s lack of trivia knowledge, awkward body language or ill-preparation for the interview could ruin his/her chances of getting the job.

If you are unsuccessful in your job search, you might find the answer in the above mentioned factors. Use this information to discover where you might be going wrong in your job search. Also find solutions to land the job most suitable for you.

President Jacob Zuma says that, while South Africa faces several challenges as a new democracy and a developing country, “our country’s positive attributes far outweigh the challenges”.

“It is a fact that the country is a much better place to live in now than it was before 1994,” the president often says.

Indeed, the slogan of the ruling party, the ANC, ahead of the local government elections on 3 August is: “Together We Move South Africa forward”.

Despite losing support over the past 22 years, the ANC continues to rule with a 62% majority, and represents the bulk of South Africa’s people.

ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa maintains that the party has significantly improved the lives of South Africans since the advent of the democratic dispensation in 1994.

These are 10 ways the ruling party has done just that – listing some of its greatest achievements to date.

Electricity – Approximately 12 million households have access to electricity, seven million more than in 1994.
Water – Approximately 93% of South Africans had access to potable water last year, compared to 62% in 1994.
Land and economic transformation – Nearly eighty thousand land claims, totaling 3.4 million hectares, have been settled and 1.8 million people have benefited.
Housing – Nearly 500 informal settlements have been replaced with quality housing and basic services. Three million free houses have been built, benefiting more than 16 million people.
Education – More than nine million children attend no-fee schools, while 9 million children are also provided with free meals at school.
Healthcare – South Africans are healthier and are living longer. The average life expectancy has moved from 53 years to 62 years of age and beyond.
Social welfare – The country has seen a dramatic is the rise in the number of recipients of social grants, from 2.4 million in 1996 to 17 million in 2016.
Sanitation – In 1994, only 50% of households had access to decent sanitation. This is up to 80%.
Black middle class – South Africa has seen strong growth in the black middle class, believed to have surpassed that of white South Africans several years ago already.
Literacy – In total, 92.9% of South Africans can read and write.

Johannesburg - The Constitutional Court on Thursday handed down a precedent-setting judgment that both President Jacob Zuma and the National Assembly were in breach of their constitutional obligations in the Nkandla matter.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng read out the 53-page unanimous judgment on the applications lodged by the EFF and the DA.

Eleven orders were made:

- The court has exclusive jurisdiction to hear the application by the EFF

The EFF approached the court in a bid to have Zuma comply with Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s remedial action that he repay the money spent on those Nkandla upgrades not needed for his security.

Mogoeng said conditions for the exercise of the court’s exclusive jurisdiction had been met.

"I conclude that the EFF has made out a case that the president’s alleged failure to comply with the remedial action, coupled with the failure to uphold the Constitution, relate to constitutional obligations imposed specifically on him," he said.

The Constitutional Court, as the highest court in the land, also had exclusive jurisdiction as it related to the National Assembly.

- The DA's application for direct access is granted

Mogoeng allowed the DA's application for access because it was similar to the EFF’s. The issues involved were extremely sensitive and of “high political importance”.

- The public protector’s findings against Zuma are binding in terms of the Constitution

Mogoeng said it was unlikely that those the public protector investigated would welcome unpleasant findings or "biting" remedial action.

"If compliance with remedial action taken were optional, then very few culprits, if any at all, would allow it to have any effect. And if it were, by design, never to have a binding effect, then it is incomprehensible just how the public protector could ever be effective in what she does and be able to contribute to the strengthening of our constitutional democracy."

He said the National Assembly was entitled to inquire into the correctness of the public protector’s findings and remedial action before it could hold the president accountable, but not in a way which undermined or trumped her mandate.

Mogoeng said the correct route would have been to challenge the Public Protector's report in court.

- Zuma’s failure to comply with the public protector’s remedial action is inconsistent with the Constitution and invalid

Zuma failed in his obligations to uphold, defend and respect the Constitution as the supreme law of the land. He failed in his duty to help and protect the public protector’s office to ensure its independence, impartiality, dignity and effectiveness.

- The National Assembly’s absolving Zuma from compliance with the public protector’s remedial action is invalid and set aside

"The National Assembly was duty-bound to hold the president accountable by facilitating and ensuring compliance with the decision of the public protector," Mogoeng said.

The National Assembly, like Zuma, could have genuinely believed that it was entitled to second-guess the remedial action.

"But, that still does not affect the unlawfulness of its preferred course of action."

- The president must reprimand the ministers involved

In a draft order submitted to the court before the hearing in February, Zuma said he was willing to reprimand ministers, in line with the public protector’s remedial action.

- Zuma must pay back the money (4 orders)

The Constitutional Court made four orders relating to the repayment of some of the R246m spent on non-security upgrades at Nkandla.

Firstly, National Treasury had to determine the reasonable cost of those features; namely the swimming pool, chicken run, cattle kraal, amphitheatre, and vistors’ centre.

Secondly, it had to determine how much of this amount Zuma should pay.

Treasury then had 60 days to report back to the court with its findings.

Finally, Zuma then had 45 days to pay back the money.

- Zuma, the National Assembly, and police minister had to pay the costs of the application, including the costs of two counsel.
