Discussions and debates at the Investing in Africa Mining Indaba 2025 in Cape Town drove home that the sector’s focus on and on was no longer at odds with .

According to Nishen Hariparsad, ’s general manager for Technology and Marketing, the Indaba’s theme of future-proofing mining in Africa highlighted the alignment between operating a mine for efficiency, and operating for sustainability. Investing in African Mining Indaba 2025 kicked off with the on Sunday, 5 February in Cape Town, South Africa. In a keynote address on the day Denys Denya, senior executive vice president of the , said that Africa must take bold steps to ‘own’ its resources, and that sustain prosperity for generations to come. He argued that the continent was standing at a crossroads and could either continue exporting its wealth and remain a in the – or, Africa could “act now and work together as governments, financial institutions, investors and industry players to build an Africa where mining is not just about extraction but about transformation, innovation and wealth creation.”

Today, 13 February 2025, Sibanye-Stillwater (Tickers JSE: SSW and NYSE: SBSW) reported the resignation of . He will retire as chief executive officer (CEO) and executive director of the group, effective 30 September 2025. , currently chief regional officer: Southern Africa region (CRO SA region), will and executive director. He will be appointed as CEO designate and executive director from 1 March 2025, while continuing his CRO: SA region responsibilities.

The group said that Stewart’s appointment follows an independent, best practice, succession process overseen by the board, during which a number of external and internal candidates with appropriate industry credentials and experience were critically assessed for the role.

This is an independent, multi-stakeholder Global Tailings Management Institute, to be headquartered in Africa.
