Accurately measuring the load on conveyor belts is critical for mines and other industrial applications, however small margins of error with belt scales can have large a dramatic impact on bottom line profitability. boast accuracy error levels of as low as 0.08% – which is unheard of in applications where many customers are happy if they achieve just 1% accuracy error.

18/07/2024

Stats SA reported that seasonally adjusted total mining production declined by 0.6% month-on-month (m-o-m) in real terms during May 2024. This follows a 0.8% m-o-m rise in April. In level terms, real mining output remains well below the peak so far in 2024, attained in February. Because of this, and even assuming some recovery in the June output figures, mining production looks set for a quarterly decline in the second quarter of 2024. This follows a contraction of 4.7% quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) in Q1 2024. In addition, total mining production remains a notable 7.4% below its pre-COVID level of December 2019 (see as illustrated in Figure 1). To put this poor performance into perspective, the level of real manufacturing production was 2.5% lower in May 2024 than during December 2019.

Mitigating Environmental Impact with Dewatering Wells

Open-cast mining, while essential for resource extraction, has a considerable environmental footprint. Responsible management of dewatering wells can significantly mitigate these impacts. By lowering the water table around excavation areas, stable pit walls are maintained, reducing the risk of collapses and landslides that can pollute nearby waterways with sediment.

Additionally, collected mine water can be treated to minimize contamination of surrounding groundwater sources by minerals or pollutants. Despite their benefits, dewatering wells present significant challenges. Maintaining stable excavation walls and preventing flooding necessitates constant management of groundwater levels, often requiring continuous pump operation. 's technological solutions provide precise measurements, ensuring continuous water flow and preventing pump blockages.

The result? More sustainable and efficient mining operations.

On 9 July 2024, Orion Minerals reported further outstanding assay results from the confirmation diamond drilling program in the Flat Mines area at its Okiep Copper Project (OCP) in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The latest results add further momentum to Orion’s development strategy for the OCP.

These results build on the initial results reported on 22 April and 24 June 2024 including an intersection of 49.35m @ 5.05% Cu at Flat Mine East (FME) among several other high-grade intersections confirming the geology and endowment of the Flat Mines Area.

In recent years, the mining industry in South Africa has become a major user of fibre-reinforced shotcrete for underground support. In line with this trend, Southern Africa reports growing demand for its market-leading CHRYSO® CSF 6000 high performance macro-synthetic fibres. Fall of ground (FOG) – one of the leading causes of injuries and fatalities in underground mines – remains one of the biggest obstacles to the industry’s quest for Zero Harm in South Africa. The fight to eliminate FOG incidents is therefore one of the main reasons for the escalating use of fibre reinforcement in shotcrete, says Willie Nel, technical sales consultant at the company.

Sharyn Macnamara (SM) speaks to executive director Gino D’Anna (GD) (Askari) about the company’s targeted exploration activity at its flagship lithium project in Namibia, known for its highly mineralised spodumene-rich pegmatite belt.

D’Anna says, “I look to Namibia for lithium as that next frontier out of Africa to drive the requirement for critical mineral exploration and exploitation. And certainly, if the world is going to reach its Net Zero timeframes of 2030 and 2050, we are definitely going to have to be far more aggressive in terms of how we develop and explore new project opportunities.”

African governments have made their response to the demand for key infrastructure a priority, which translates into exciting opportunities for local and global investors alike. While inadequate infrastructure may be the primary challenge to achieving Africa’s long-term development goals, it also creates considerable opportunity for investors to fund the provision and upkeep of physical infrastructure assets such as ports, railway lines, toll roads, power stations, hospitals and broadband ICT.

Zimbabwe will see the Mining and Technical Exhibitions’ (MTEExpos’s) crew in July and August 2024 – for the first time since 2015

Zimbabwe’s mining sector is highly diversified, endowed with close to 40 known minerals – platinum group metals (PGMs), chrome, gold, coal, lithium, and diamonds being major commodity role players. The country boasts the second-largest platinum deposit and high-grade chromium ores in the world, with approximately 2.8 billion tons of PGMs and 10 billion tons of chromium ore.1 The Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe reported that the mining sector accounts for around 12% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP)2 and an average of 80%1 of foreign currency earnings.

25/06/2024

’s newly launched Mine 2024 report says Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) remain a crucial strategy for miners that want to maintain their competitive advantage even while the industry grows in new terrain in response to emerging demand. The report notes that the percentage of completed mining deals involving the Top 40 that were focused on critical minerals rose to 40% in 2023 from 22% in 2019, underlining this seismic shift driving M&A activity. Copper and lithium dominated such deals, accounting for over 70% of them by volume, up marginally from 2022.

“On this front, sustainability factors and considerations are key to such transactions,” says Andries Rossouw, PwC South Africa Energy, Utilities and Resources leader. “Investors are not interested only in the current bottom line, but want insight into how a company will perform and what it will look like in the future.” In this vein, mining companies are increasingly forming alliances beyond traditional boundaries as they seek the technical skills they lack and are also collaborating with governments to create these enabling environments.
