fil·a·ment, n. The thin wire inside a light bulb that emits light when heated by an electric current. Filament is a burgeoning community of writers interested in actively engaging with issues on-campus and beyond. Our activities (which will include free pizza occasionally and free t-shirts once) are made possible through a generous, interminable grant from the Kelly Writers House. On top of eating
pizza and wearing cool t-shirts, we produce an annual magazine and a blog that we update daily. How is Filament different from other on-campus publications? While The DP presents front-line reporting and 34 Street dishes up culture writing infused with snarkiness, Filament strives to engage seriously with a variety of subjects relevant to our student body, including arts and culture, science and technology, social issues and politics. Our print magazine features mostly longform nonfiction journalism – trend pieces, profiles, reviews, and criticism – while our blog covers similar subject matter but in shorter, pithy posts. We also publish select works of fiction, artwork, and poetry, both in print and online. Acknowledgements
