Uploading of offensive content by a student

Case registered, investigation is on, evidences are being collected & will be taken to logical conclusion: DGP J&K Shri R.R. Swain

Appeals people not fell to vicious designs of the anti-national/anti-social elements

Jammu, Nov 30: After taking cognizance of uploading offensive content by a student, the Jammu and Kashmir Police has launched the investigation which will be taken to logical conclusion and no one would be allowed to hurt the religious feelings of any community, and nobody will be allowed to use this incident for malicious purposes either. This was stated by Director General of Police, J&K, Shri R.R. Swain at a press briefing at the Police Control Room here this morning.

At the very outset, the DGP said that we respect the honour and dignity of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and the police is well aware of its duties and responsibilities to take action against anyone trying to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere. He appealed to the general public that they should not fell to vicious designs of the anti-national/anti-social elements who by taking undue advantage of this incident are attempting to disturb the communal harmony and brotherhood for which Kashmir is known from ages together. He said that, police has registered a case regarding the uploading of offensive content, investigation is on, evidences are being collected and assured that the case will be taken to logical conclusion.

Shri R.R Swain informed that, after discussions with the law officers and approval from the competent authority, law will be made operational here under 144 Criminal Procedure Act under which action will be taken against those uploading, sharing videos, posts, texts, audio on social media having potential to trigger communal frenzy, promote terrorism, separatism etc adding that by these activities at times people’s life get disturbed, businesses get affected schools/colleges get closed and whole system gets disrupted.

The DGP said that J&K police is also investigating the people who by taking undue advantage of the incident are trying to disturb the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. He said that we have to make a distinction between the innocent statement and the statement issued with the malicious intentions.

To a query regarding attempts by Pakistan to vitiate the atmosphere here, the DGP said that there is no doubt in it, a number of messages are being designed from across the border and circulated on social media adding that some people here are using these messages to disturb the peaceful atmosphere. Some people get benefitted from these activities which he said is a known fact and sought cooperation of the people to foil these evil conspiracies.

Big respite for power consumers as GoI allocates additional 293 MW of power to meet winter demand

SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 30: In yet another respite given to power consumers during peak winters, the Government of India (GoI) has increased power allocation to J&K by about 293 MW, by transferring power from distant power houses in West Bengal, Bihar and even Bhutan.

According to the spokesperson for the Jammu & Kashmir Power Development Department (JKPDD), in today’s digital era, modern tools and software enable power transfer and management in an automated manner without requiring any human intervention, depending upon the demand, availability, and of course the network feasibility.

Regarding new power allocations made today by Govt. Of India to J&K, the spokesman said that Jammu & Kashmir, being primarily dependent on hydroelectric power, faces significant fall in generation during winters due to low water level in rivers and therefore, around 85% of power supply during winters is sourced from thermal plants to compensate for the deficit during winters.

The spokesman reiterated that the UT is making every effort to ensure sustainable and firm power availability throughout the year. In this direction, during the current financial year, the UT has entered into historic Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for 1600 MW of Solar power , 900 MW from Hydro, and an additional 500 MW from thermal plants, currently in progress following the decision of the UT Administrative Council under the Shakti policy. This will not only lead towards resource adequacy for the region, but will also provide an optimal mix of Hydro, Thermal, Solar generation, while the efforts are underway to harness wind power as well so that the strength behind renewable energy is utilized to the maximum.

Addressing concerns raised in a recent news item published in one of the local news dailies on November 30, 2023, highlighting a surge in interruptions in J&K, the spokesperson reiterated that a persistent issue contributing to these interruptions is the non-disclosure of actual electric load by consumers.

Regarding the hours of power supply to consumers, the spokesperson conveyed that smart metering is under implementation in mission mode and focus is on ensuring uninterrupted and regular power supply in areas saturated with smart meters, while also curbing losses.

In areas without smart metering, the department is sustaining the same number of power supply hours as maintained during the previous year. Moreover, there is a curtailment schedule in effect which is diligently being published to prevent any inconvenience to the public. The spokesman further emphasized that contrary to the mention of Hammams in the news item, electricity remains the primary and preferred source for heating, with people using crude nichrome wires or non-thermostat fitted heaters which remain operational throughout the day.

Recognizing the urgency, the spokesman emphasized on discontinuing the use of obsolete and environmentally unfriendly electric heating systems. The spokesman also mentioned that numerous crude heaters which have been banned by the department were recovered by the enforcement squads of KPDCL in the recently conducted inspection drives.

In addition to maintaining reliable power supply amidst extreme weather conditions, the Power Development Department (PDD) is proactively engaged in eradicating instances of illegal hooking. In the last seven days itself, inspection teams of KPDCL have conducted 7585 number of inspections in different districts of Kashmir region and imposed a fine of Rs.68 Lakhs on the defaulters.

*Govt nails big parent-child begging nexus in Kashmir; 14 kids rescued in surprise raid at Sgr*

*32 rescued in 3 months; All rescued minors non-J&K residents from Punjab, Bihar, UP; will handover them to CWC’s of their respective districts, herculean task to stop child begging in Sgr, drive to continue in city parts in days ahead: CWC head Dr Khair-un-Nisa*

Srinagar, Oct 04 (KNO): Acting swiftly after receiving repeated complaints about child begging in the capital city of Srinagar, Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of the district Wednesday swung into action and conducted a “surprise raid” in the city centre Lal Chowk where 14 child beggars were rescued and taken for counselling.

This was for the first time that a ‘special surprise drive’ against child begging was launched by the CWC at Lal Chowk. “We had been receiving complaints about frequent child begging in various parts of Srinagar. Today, we decided to conduct a surprise check at Lal Chowk where we caught hold of 14 child beggars including four girls,” CWC head for Srinagar, Dr Khair-un-Nisa told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

She said while they were taking the child beggars to a shelter home at Nishat ‘their parents started begging for the release of their kids. “This is what makes our job tough. There is a nexus between parents and kids. Ironically, the parents of the kids rescued today were also beggars,” Dr Nisa said, adding that “we will counsel all the 14 kids (all of them minors) and handover them to the CWCs of their respective districts/States.”

Asked about any tentative number of outside beggars in Srinagar, she said there is no accurate data available as the same may be lying with the Labour department. “Majority of these beggars are from Punjab, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh,” she said. “In three months, we have rescued 32 child beggars including today’s 18.”

Dr Nisa said that the special drive will continue in the days ahead as complaints of large numbers of street children including those indulging in begging outside major shrines and markets of Srinagar.

“So far, the previous cases have been transferred to CWCs of other places outside J&K for their rehabilitation as almost all among them were non-J&K residents. All of them were migrants and were shifted to their native places,” she said.

She said an eight-year-old domestic helper was also rescued from Srinagar after a neighbour called the CWC. “Our primary job is to counsel and rehabilitate the rescued persons and hand them over to their respective CWCs,” Dr Nisa said. She said that all the residents of Srinagar who have minor domestic helpers at their should voluntarily approach the CWC. To a query about how she feels to lead the drive against children in street situations being a woman, Dr Nisa said that she has done LLB and being a law-aware person, she forgets about gender and focuses on her duty while on the streets.”

“I forget I am a woman and my primary focus always remains to perform my duty without fear,” she told KNO. It may be recalled that every year, Kashmir sees the arrival of lakhs of outside beggars especially in the month of holy Ramadhan. They arrive in the month of March and stay here till November. An official in the social welfare department told KNO that there is a proper rehabilitation policy for the beggars in J&K. “We rescue the beggars especially child beggars and lodge them in shelter homes. They are later being handed over to concerned CWCs,” he said. Locals at Hazratbal shrine told KNO that last Friday on the eve of Eid-e-Meelad-un-Nabi (SAW), at least 500 outside beggars including children were found begging. “Many children were found chasing the devotees seeking money. The devotees felt irritated by the huge presence of non-J&K beggars especially children,” said Abdul Aziz Mir, a shopkeeper outside the revered shrine of Hazratbal—(KNO)
