This year is the 74th anniversary of the KATUSA program, which began as a gentleman’s agreement between the Honorable Syngman Rhee, president of the Republic of Korea, and General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, commander in chief, United Nations Command.
On July 15, 1950, just three weeks after the Korean War began, the two leaders initiated the KATUSA program, informally marking the start of a long and rich history of friendship and cooperation between the Republic of Korea and the United States of America. The KATUSA program predates the mutual defense treaty signed by the two countries more than three years later, which pledges “collective defense for the preservation of peace and security” in the Pacific region.

The Philippines is calling for an international inquiry into environmental damage at a Chinese-controlled shoal in the South China Sea, including a massive loss of giant clams.
The Philippine Coast Guard in late May 2024 released surveillance photographs of Chinese fishermen harvesting giant clams in a lagoon at Scarborough Shoal. It said such activity occurred for years until apparently stopping in March 2019.
“Those were the last remaining giant clams that we saw in Bajo de Masinloc,” Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela told reporters, referring to the prominent fishing area off the northwestern Philippines.

The PRC has built at least 95 hydroelectric dams on the Mekong’s tributaries, according to Reuters. Since 1995, it also has built 11 mainstream mega-dams, with more planned, and helped build two dams in Laos.
It is not only the dams, but how they are managed that contributes to the crises downstream, with analysts contending that Beijing acts with little regard for other Mekong nations.
