To our loyal listeners. Thanks for all your amazing support over the years.
Today we start a new journey into Patreon.
We have come a long long way from being an illegal project in a janky truck, with a duct tape sign and zero internet presence, from humble website coding on the side of the road to being invited into the Shouting Fire International Radio Network family, and booking and supporting our independent artists and watching them bloom into international touring acts in their own right.
Together, our listeners, artists, supporters and friends have managed to bring Paddock Radio to the capabilities we have today, and that empowers and inspires us as a project and a team to reach beyond our immediate means in order to facilitate the growth and evolution of our platform, and enable us to bring our artists to a wider audience on a scale we've never attempted before.
In the coming months we will be launching a series of Patron only rewards tiers that will allow us the resources to support the project and ensure the future of independent content creation. Donations to the project directly affect the running and wellbeing of our station and artists and allow us to keep our servers running and our network active. Higher tier patrons allow us to offer unique opportunities to supporters and artists like touring events, live stream exclusives, art shows and one to one experiences.
I can't wait to share this with you, thanks very much for your help.

I want to take a moment to appreciate someone that has helped me immensely over the last few months.
During the months of November and December he moved into the truck cab to be my flatmate in order to get all our crazy Paddock Radio projects ready for kiwiburn. Suffering a fractured sternum just before kiwiburn this ABSOLUTE WEAPON turned our tiny TWO PERSON camp crew into a one man army division.
Setting up our Starlink on the roof, fixing a NIGHTMARE plumbing labyrinth culminating in finding a suspiciously hidden second water pump (that we're certain ran some kind of ball washer), wingmanning an epic overnight drive into a gigantic 20 hour roll out of our entire camp, inducting our trainee volunteers, running creative workshops and helping set up our sound system, building and deploying the first ever kiwiburn PABX sip phone server while trudging through mud and rain, leaping into our newly created Safety Officer role and joining the ranks of Paddock Radio staff in the role of Artists and Repertoire.
A very warm shout out to our very special Malix Moore the mythical. He's not on social media, but he deserves a huge credit all the same.
We could not have lit this crazy fuse without your help mate, and I'm looking forward to smashing the rest of the country and sending it properly with ya.
I hope you get some rest, cos we're not done yet by half.

LONG EMBARRASSING POST
So I lost my phone last night.
Oh well right ????
Well actually I use my phone for MANY IMPORTANT STUFF in my career.
I use it for:
- Busking to make money in between performances.
- Networking for performances and gigs.
- My social media platforms and online content
- Keep in contact with my family especially my dad.
So now I find myself in an embarrassing situation now where I have to use my natural skills without any speaker since my phone which has my backing tracks on it is no longer with me.
I also now find that smartphones cost in the HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS to buy a new one. Even the lower end is around about $500 without going into pixel mode when making online content.
I now know just how FRAGILE my career infrastructure really is and that I'm really bad and too proud to ASK FOR HELP.
In my mind, all of this is my own stupid fault and that I have to hold my head and take this on my chin.
So if you see me on the streets of Wellington busking without a speaker and just a cardboard box in front of me beatboxing without a mic.
Just know that I'm trying my best not to give up and that I hope I can raise funds (from my MAIN SPONSORS of course .. you) to get me a new smartphone to regain some of my digital privileges that I took for granted before. Also now know that XMAS is in 7 days. Let see if I have the true natural skill to get myself up from the ground that I perform on.
If I can get at least 500 people in the next 7 days to donate $1 each to me while I'm busking on the streets of Wellington, then that would be helpful indeed. If not, then I understand, continue on busking until I can get a smartphone.
Sorry if I'm repeating myself. I'm just so frustrated at myself right now for sounding like an idiot. This would be a good time to have a punching to take my frustrations out on while getting fit as well.
I don't want you to feel sorry for me, but to at least understand what's happening to me at the moment.
If you have read to this point, then I thank you for acknowledging me and this post. Much appreciated. :)
Merry Xmas and I hope your XMAS isn't as idiotically stressful as my situation is :)
Now I'm off to look myself in the mirror and tell the man in the mirror that I stuffed up and to get over myself.
LIVE LIFE,
LIVE LONG,
LIVE WELL
KING :)
P.S: If I have to be desperate, I'll sell some of my stuff which may include my arcade cabinet. PM me for more info :)

Airbourne, well, Grassbourne Piracy
My name is Josh Fluro. I’m a radio technician, sound engineer.
Paddock Radio started at Kiwiburn 2017, after I decided that running Rockstar Dreams was too much work for a fourth year, and I wanted something I could automate to run itself :)
The theme was “The Robots Are Coming”, so I thought it would be funny to automate a radio transmitter to spit out prerecorded propoganda news stories and blast confusing music out into the ether. Registering as an art project four days before I arrived, Paddock Radio was actually just a barely functioning transmitter plugged into an ipod under my sink.
An enormous amount of interest was generated immediately, and for a moment I actually forgot I was an art camp. With zero promo done, and just a piece of plywood to announce what we were doing, I settled back to enjoy a cold beer and blast whatever music I felt like
(in this case, the entire Black Sabbath back catalogue for the whole day, all 7 hours of it)
I was confused why so many people were staring into my camper truck, until someone from the depot came over and begged me to put more signage up, they were getting swamped with requests for the location of “the pirate radio station”. When red earth radio from Australia’s Burning Seed came to interview me, I realised it was the real deal. Then they asked me for a page link.
“page?” I replied, “It’s tied to the fence”.
Paddock radio is fiercely independant, fiercely non conformist and proudly pirate.
The entire studio is powered by three deep cycle batteries, charged by a single 200W solar panel. Our total load is 25 watts, including studio mixers, transmitter, and automation computer. We play whatever we want, whenever we want.
Now we’ve upgraded a little, but the power consumption is still a major bottleneck.
Understand that the entire project is self funded on a spaghetti budget, and most of our equipment is either self built or mashed together out of things I found in the dumpster. The two tired batteries under the sink provide enough power to run until about 3am, and then everything dies in a flurry of bleeping, flashing and dangerous power fluctuations.
The first year was a test, and from that we learned:
Our range was too small and poor quality
Our AC gear was drawing WAY too much power and draining the batteries,
creating a terrible hum feedback loop in our mic mixer.
We weren’t interactive enough
Our music sucked
To resolve this, we added a brand new quarter wave antenna which boosted our range from a negligible 1km to a seriously illegal 30+ (maybe even 50+) kms.
I removed all the AC gear and replaced the crappy mixer with a crappier USB powered one. I’m still working on getting a brickwall compressor/limiter in our signal chain to make the sound better.
We got a couple of small transmitters with the hopes of running outside broadcasts from other theme camps, but after all the successful testing throughout the year, they just refused to play nice on the paddock :( it happens.
Our music still sucks, so we made it sh*ttier by adding foreign language audiobook chapters and 3 hour string theory lectures to our playlist at random. You’re welcome.
So what next?
Well, I’m out of money as I’ve been travelling around the country since the last burn, living in the studio truck and rolling up on unsuspecting parties and beaches and turning the truck into a rolling debaucherous mess. We need to replace some critical gear due to damage, so I’m running a givealittle page to try and raise funds for the next one :)
