From the mountainous wastes of Kingsport, Tennessee comes Purulency, a very recent death metal band who sent me their advance demo a little while ago. For an American band, these boys clearly love the old Finnish death metal scene from the '90s, as their music on Transcendent Unveiling of Dimensions reminds me a good bit of the first demos from legendary acts like Demigod, Demilich, and Abhorrence. You get more vile and crushing numbers like opener "(Inside the) Arcane Hypogeum" and "Adrift in Festering Perpetuity" along with some more daring cuts like the complex "Xenolith of Ruination" and the eerie midsection of "Devoured by Sentient Nihility," the latter of which genuinely sends a chill down my spine every time I hear it. You probably noticed I just named every track, but this is the kind of release where you kind of have to due to how short it is and how every track is a killer homage to the gory days of Finnish death metal. Just look at the killer album art and you'll know what you're getting here, no more, no less, and if you're like me, that means you're already looking forward to a full-length from these lads.

Decibel Magazine - Transcendent Unveiling of Dimensions, the demo from Tennessee newcomers Purulency, is pure f**king death metal. Out this Friday, January 26 on Caligari Records, Transcendent Unveiling contains four songs of pure death metal worship inspired by the likes of Demilich, Grave, Abhorrence, Autopsy and Convulse.
Thematically, the songs on Transcendent Unveiling explore Lovecraftian themes and alien worlds. The songs have been under construction in some form since late 2018, when guitarist Neal Williams and drummer Alex Depew first began working together under the Purulency banner. The rest of the lineup filled out in 2022, bringing them to the incarnation you hear on the demo. There’s something for most death metal fans here, from doomy overtones to more high-speed, technical offerings on some tracks.

Meat Mead Metal: a promising start for these Costa Rican beasts as Perishing pour vitriol and filth into this four-track demo that should just be the start of a horrifying reign. This smokes and brutalizes the entire run, and it has boundless energy that feels like it is aligning with the darkest forces lurking in the universe.
Two Guys Meta Reviews: four tracks of pulverizing death doom that gives a man a lot to think about. There are some very real and wonderfully tortured ideas driving Lutum forward that make it a fantastically compelling and twisted offering. The thing that really strikes me though is the guitar tone which is utterly bottom scraping and terrifying. This is death doom done right, there is no tolerance for first timers, no shelter for those trying to just get into the genre, it's just punishing, unrelenting riffage.

Emerged in Kingsport, TN, in December of 2018 when Neal Williams brought forth a collection of riffs and song concepts to a friend, Alex Depew, who then joined the band on drums. In 2022, Garrett Morelock (guitar) and session/live members Harrison Hunt (vocals) and Carter Vickers (bass) joined. The band recorded their first demo, “Transcendent Unveiling of Dimensions” in 2023. Lyrically, the band strays from the typical gore approach, choosing instead to focus on imagery related to “alien” or vaguely Lovecraftian worlds. Drawing inspiration from iconic acts like Abhorrence, Demilich, Grave, Amorphis, Demigod, Convulse, and others, Purulency crafts a sound steeped in the traditions of death metal.

Lost in an Eternal Silence is a clandestine plunge into sulfurous, deeply entrenched energies. Upping both the barbarism AND technical wizardry of its EP predecessor, BLOOD OATH's debut album melds mind-melted songwriting - angular, askew, but somehow surprisingly melodic - with a pitch-black atmosphere and utterly gnarly production. That latter element undeniably separates the Chileans from so many squeaky-clean contemporaries, but make no mistake that their attack is superlative in its precision; it's thankfully/uniquely wrapped in a thick-as-a-brick recording style that suggests an astute understanding of turn-of-the-'90s aesthetics. Cyclonic rhythm work guides the riffing as hauntingly bent leads dot the treacherous landscape, fretless bass eerily often taking center stage, and effects are liberally (and effectively) utilized for further diabolic drama. More than anything, Lost in an Eternal Silence fries synapses with shapeshifting yet always-linear movement, beckoning the listener down into those catacombs...and, if one is of hardy constitution, emerging enlightened.
On evidence of Lost in an Eternal Silence, BLOOD OATH are a revelation for those into the cultest ends of tech-death. Maniacs of early '90s Sadus, mid-'90s Cenotaph, or especially the works of The Chasm and Stargazer, meet your new gods!

FULL STREAM - - HALLUCINATE's idiosyncratic muse is one that's thoroughly integrated into their aesthetic - as rough-hewn as true death metal should be, but subtly (and sometimes not-so-subtly) stirred with an alchemist's touch - rather than retrofitting mawkish elements in a shallow show of "weirdness." It all starts with strong songwriting, is pushed forward with loose & locked-in execution, and then is embellished with tasteful touches of said psychedelia and prog, either in the solar-flaring leads or in dramatic-yet-smooth breaks. Further, From the Bowels of the Earth sees HALLUCINATE moving at many speeds, instilling many sensations along the way - foremost among them, comfort in dissonance and nature mysticism by way of suspended release - but always with the rumbling crush of classic '90s death metal.
