Infernal Masquerade Webzine reviews Kildonan's Embers and declares; 'a masterful release that captures emotions in a very raw and yet polished way. Hamish MacKintosh has managed to craft some uniquely excruciating songs that dive into many emotions and expertly shift gears to inflict the most pain. If you like music that is extreme, melodic, highly melancholic, and very well crafted, look no further and check this one out.'

Full review:

As a continuation of Vostok, Hamish MacKintosh returns with “Embers”, the debut release of Kildonan. With a very emotionally charged Black/Doom Metal style, this release features six tracks and nearly 40 minutes reminiscent of a mixture of Bethlehem on their “Dictius Te Necare” era, and Deat...

A menopausal Hate Meditations hates on The Holy Flesh third effort and claims: 'Take the plodding, longform threads of early Negura Bunget, the domesticated alt rock of Drudkh, and layer in some ham-fisted gestures toward the avant-garde a-la Ved Buens Ende, the presence of which, given the fact that they take the music precisely nowhere, can only be explained as a desperate act of seasoning an otherwise drab husk. I presume this artist thinks they are building emotional catharsis into harsh black metal affectations through the exaggerated nods to mid-period Opeth’s autumnal rock. The result leaves us begging for the music to develop into something (anything?) as guitar lines literally whine in circularity around the same variations on a theme. The slow, lacklustre drums doing little to relieve us of this tedium. This is essentially what happens when fragments of atmospheric black metal are partitioned off into dead-end alt-rock indulgences. The music fixates on contriving emotion, sadness, depression with an almost gauche sense of its own entitlement, making any activity, musicality, tonal or rhythmic manipulation all the more grating, put in service of an effervescent nothing.' Judge for yourselves......

Abysmal Hymns reviews The Holy Flesh's and gives it a 9 out of 10, declaring: '....Another plus to this album is you can actually hear the bass all too often bass playing gets lost on black metal albums. The second part of "Martyr" feels like an extension of the first. The first part of "Redeemer' has a beautifully haunting melody sweeping through it and moves at a more melancholy pace. The more melodic approach also applies to the last song. I will give this album a 9, it's a deliberate take on black metal that once again proves it does not have to live and die by the blast beat. '

The 3rd album from this British black metal project. While black metal when it is done well is one of my favorite sub-genres of metal than...

Kildonan's first public work, Embers is a six-song / 41-minute monolith of deliriously swirling black metal, mesmerizing and melodic in equal measure. Nods to gods of dissonance like later Deathspell Omega and Blut Aus Nord are prominent, but there's equally a second wave-derived spellcasting not unlike the English atmospheric Black Metal movement as ushered forth by the likes of Altar of Plagues.

NO CLEAN SINGING checks out the first track by Kildonan and I quote, ‘Embers is dedicated “to all who lost their homes during the Highland Clearances”. With an inspiration such as that, it’s no wonder that there is anger, sadness, and a sense of a particular place in “Iolliar – Bhuidhe“.

Both the anger and the sadness come through quickly in the bleak slash of the song’s opening riff and in the intensity of the howling and splintering cries. The fury surges as the drums take off and the burning violence in the riffing swells. The music also soars above the tumult of bass and drums, more expansive in its sweep but also more tormented and despairing in its mood, though the wrenching wildness of the vocals have something to do with that too.

The grip of the song never loosens, even when extravagant singing (epic and doomed) replaces the cries and screams, even when the drums rumble and tumble and the slashed chords grimly reverberate. When the intensity mounts again, those wailing cries seem even more shattering, and the music even more stricken with agony.’

MetalBite reviews Kildonan's upcoming debut Embers and gives it a 9 out of 10, 'What a beaut and what a fine representation of true black metal; a breath of fresh air in comparison to what’s become a rather predictable Scandinavian scene: intelligent and visceral, soul-stirring and despairing BM that inspires deep thought along with a focused sense of yearning. There is not much in the way of other bands or solo projects to compare Kildonan to and that’s the beauty of Embers. This record and this project are very much their own entities - beholden only to the precious lands by which they were inspired and to the black metal person who values meaning over superficial things like technicality and aggression. Feel the pulse of the heartbeat of generations past during each minute of every no-compromise album cut and relish in the rehashing of a simpler time when family, hardship, and homestead were the heart of life.

Black metal for enlightenment and for sacredness is Kildonan’s Embers. Music for the seasoned and scrutinizing enthusiast who has grown weary of typical Satanic black metal and who admonishes the plasticity of our modern day. Dig your hands into the precious soil of the land and of harvest if only in your mind, take in the salty coastal air, and strike up the timbers of remembrance. Let them burn to golden embers in honor of those forlorn…'

THE HOLY FLESH - Advocate, Martyr and Redeemer - Out Now on Cassette

Decibel Magazine: ‘Caligari Records definitely excels in finding stuff that doesn’t quite sound like anything else. The Holy Flesh is certainly black metal. But is it atmospheric and flowing? Or is it raw and ripping? Or maybe it’s progressive and experimental. Maybe it’s all of that and none of it. All I know is it’s really cool and mashes a lot of moods together in ways I’m not sure I’ve heard before!’
