Skwidy Fishing Fishing Photos, Video and Reports of my Fishing & Diving Adventures from around New Zealand

My name is Skwidy and I have been fishing for over 15 years here in New Zealand. My goal with this page is complete my bucket list of the many fish i am still yet to catch, and to document this journey

We take a look at how the food chain works in the ocean..! Kingfish and barracouta rocket in to take advantage of a hooked blue cod, and absolute chaos erupts as i wind him in!

15/08/2024

This is by far the most chaotic clip I have ever filmed on my underwater camera! Watch as a kingfish picks up my Fishbites bait off the bottom and then heads straight off to the reef to try and break me off! My Black Magic Tackle tough trace was definitely working over time in this one!

We look back at a huge weekend of fishing through late July as the weather (somewhat) finally settled enough to get my Viking Kayaks reload out there. With swell completely gone for 3 days i decided to fish all three days, expending a huge amount of energy to do so.

Day 1
The first day was a hard one, as the wind wasn't good enough to get where i wanted to go, i sat on a bit of reef near the island and managed to pick up a very nice sized tarakihi over 40cm along with two fat blue cod. It was slow going and after more wind turning up, i fished in close through some dogfish and barracouta to fluke two gurnard at the same time right near 3pm.

Day 2
On Saturday it would actually be much closer to forecast with barely a breath of wind. I made the call to paddle straight out to 80m to drop Black Magic Tackle Sunakku jigs and Fishbites on dropper rigs, continuing my search for Deepwater fish like hapuku that can range in here through the winter. Despite perfect conditions, it was immediately apparent that a huge biomass of spiny dogfish were sat on the bottom. After winding up 6 of these deadbeats from 80m i gave up and headed in closer. It was tough going today, with a lot of paddle time and not a huge amount of fish as i searched down something to take home. Eventually I picked up a singular blue cod, after doing a few drops with the underwater camera. Later i found a surprise snapper on the sand nearby, rounding out a very tough day with the majority spent paddling, looking for where the fish were.

Day 3
After two tough days, I put a plan together. Get my secret crayfish frame berley out to pump 4 kilos of it over a range of spots. This would hopefully avoid spiny dogfish who don't feed on shellfish species as much. The first part of the day i struggled to find the target blue cod and tarakihi, with many i landed just too small. With a bit of relief the huge Warehou saved the morning biting a 3/0 Black Magic Tackle KLT hook tipped with pink EZ Crab Fishbites. With nothing else legal coming out to play, i moved on out further to sea, near where i got the snapper. Since I had found one here there would likely be more, and my suspicions were confirmed when i picked one up as the first fish on the new spot. The weather started to throw a tantrum, as the flat calm sea slowly built to just under 8 knots of wind. I can handle a fair bit more, but being out to sea i was keeping a close eye out. It was the correct direction from the north east, so i'd get blown in if it got any higher.
I stuck it out and was rewarded with more snapper, a single tarakihi just barely over my self imposed limit of 30cm. Shockingly the berley brought in some gurnard very close to the reef and I had an epic double hookup on the rig.
With wind refusing to settle I had to get closer to land for safety and on the way in the wind at last eased slightly. I parked up again to use the last of my crayfish berley. It was a long wait but it was worth it as after an hour, the gurnard turned up big time! It was utter chaos as the the tide turned, bringing a dozen in short order.
The final two fish landed were some of the best of the day, with a lovely winter trevally and the Gurnard of the trip at a shade under 1.3kg.
I returned to shore bagged up completely and stocked up for the rest of winter if the weather keeps going the way it is.
Plenty of fish caught in between, not many photos as wind makes it hard to keep water off the lens, i was also on such a mission to bag up they went out the window!

Weather looking not great for the next little bit so you may see me somewhere more north soon enough!

We had a 3 day run of weather recently so after 2 months of no fishing, it was time to get back out there, and what do you know! We picked up a monster Blue Warehou on the final day !

Having only caught a small one some 4 years ago, this thing was a much better fish. Using Pink EZ crab Fishbites and Black Magic Tackle 3/0 KLT hooks while targeting tarakihi, this beast smashed the rig and fought like a cross between a large kahawai and trevally. After some searing runs just under the kayak I got it aboard!

One thing i didn't know is these are a very very slimy fish and i got covered in it! Looking forward to trying this in the pan as its flesh was a nice white colour and tender like a blue cod. Anyone got recipe ideas 😁?

More pictures of the other fish we found to come this week!

This lovely condition Snapper is my best one from recent memory, on a winter day out from kapiti, Black Magic Tackle sunakku jigs were doing the damage at a depth of 40m. During the course of the day i caught this snapper and many more averaging over 3.5kg. Epic !

This Monster Blue Moki is easily my biggest of the species at 74cm and an estimated 7kg, it was an absolute pig of a fish. Fishing off the coast of Kapiti using a Black Magic Tackle flasher rig with Fishbites EZ Crab Orange tipped on the hooks. If you want to catch moki like this you can find fishbites at Last Cast Bait & Tackle NZ !

New Video up on the YouTube Channel!
Bit of action out wide and then tangling with some eating species along with a rather big shark which drags me offshore! Seems to be a running theme lately!

We head off to find more Tuna, but are handed a hiding, with barely a fish to speak of. Later that week I head out for redemption in the shallows. And manage...
