Christina Galisatus] - piano & compositions

Christina Galisatus’ stunning debut album, Without Night, emerged from a whole-hearted embrace of making music for no one but herself. After working for years proving what she could do to earn the respect of male gatekeepers in the often misogynistic modern music scene, Without Night is a reflection of Galisatus refusing to give into what others expected of her. The album is a stunning, bold, and defiant creation that honors her honesty and creativity. Perhaps that’s why these songs feel so organically lived-in, warm and familiar yet filled with daring chord changes and a remarkable cohesion between Galisatus and the band she assembled.

Finally having a set of compositions that felt completely true to her after writing and performing music that didn't always feel this way, Galisatus made the decision to record the music as a stamp in time. Once this decision was made, she arranged other details, like whom she wanted to record these songs with and in what configuration they would do so. She recruited Erin Bentlage on vocals, Michael Blasky on tenor saxophone, Steven Lugerner to handle bass clarinet, Brandon Bae for guitar duties, Joshua Crumbly on the bass, and Zev Shearn-Nance behind the drum kit. As an artist whose compositional process entails improvising on piano while singing wordless melodies on top, Galisatus had never before considered writing lyrics for her songs. Her previous work always reflected moods and themes through harmonic ingenuity and melodic themes. On Without Night, though, she pens lyrics for Bentlage, who gorgeously sings about the idea that the difficulties we face are an integral part of what makes our lives and experiences more full.

• today is the day! Mark Clifford’s Dirty Snacks Ensemble “You Would Do Well” is now released and available on all platforms! • “Your Would Do Well” fully crystallizes intrepid compositional voice – connecting his affinities to post-jazz, indie rock, modern classical music, and hip hop. “For this band, I often start with a beat – just keys and a drum machine played on my MPC or Juno. I record and loop all the parts, and then I break these sketches down into arrangements for the ensemble that allow the players to be individualistic, while still following a tight, through-composed roadmap.” The ensemble’s eclectic instrumentation includes Mark Clifford on vibraphone, keyboards, and vocals, Crystal Pascucci-Clifford on cello, Robert Woods-Ladue on guitar, percussion, and spoken word, Geneva Harrison on drums, Steve Blum on keyboards, Scott Brown on electric bass, Cory Wright on reeds, and Karl Evangelista on guitar, with production and synth programming from Rob Shelton and Quinn Theis on additional vocals •••

We are so excited to welcome to the S&S family! Their new album “Nomadic Pulse / Pulse In Dub” features trombonists Scott Larson, Rob Ewing and Naomi Siegel, tubist Marc Bolin, guitarists Myles Boisen, John Finkbeiner, and John Schott, bassist Lisa Mezzacappa, and Jason Levis on drums. ••• While Joseph’s Bones credits influences from dub masters King Tubby and Lee "Scratch" Perry,“Joseph” is a reference to Bob Marley, following a rastafarian tradition of giving a biblical name to
someone of importance to your own life, who’s a central figure for bandleader and drummer Jason
Levis. What Levis and his collaborators call “avant-dub” is a reimagining of dub’s surface texture with new instruments (notably, a trombone choir) without losing the physical impact of dub’s dance roots. Featuring a unique instrumentation of three trombones, tuba, three guitars, bass and drums, Joseph's Bones effortlessly flows between visceral groove and abstract sound.

thank you for reviewing ’s latest release “It Takes One to Know One” • “For the
project, Lugerner, who plays several
reed instruments, exclusively blows
bass clarinet. While that instrument
makes one think of Eric Dolphy - on this set he displays a smoother
and more straightahead style than is
usually associated with the instrument. Easy to enjoy, It Takes One To Know One
finds Lugerner's bass clarinet perfectly
at home in this sparse setting.”
