Parapara is a hidden gem in Golden Bay, sprawling over just 0.69 square kilometers and home to a little over a hundred people. The settlement, a blend of permanent residences and holiday homes, comes alive in the summer, bustling with energy and activity. As the season changes, it returns to a quieter, more serene state for the rest of the year.

Last Wednesday marked the close of a carving wānanga in Aniseed Valley, hosted by Timoti and Morgan at their workshop. The course, spearheaded by NMIT, offers an alternative pathway for Māori rangatahi seeking alternatives to conventional educational models.

The students' determination was evident as they concentrated on finishing their carvings, with several working on their second or third piece. The Pounamu and locally-sourced pakohe, offered a tangible link to the land's deep-rooted past. Carving demands undivided attention and a keen intuition for the stone's behaviour on the wheel, understanding its unique texture and form as it's gradually transformed.

The day was punctuated by the lifting of a hāngī, which Timoti had been tending since the early dawn light of 5 am. We gathered together to enjoy an abundant spread of t**i (muttonbird), along with chicken, beef, and pork, complemented by a generous assortment of vegetables.

I was very humbled to be invited along to document the last day of the wānanga with my camera and see for myself why everyone calls Timoti the hāngi master.

I’m still out capturing images for my Coastscapes project. I’m not sure what the end goal is - article? exhibition? prints? book? but the idea keeps drawing me back looking for new ways to explore the concept.

In an aerial tapestry of earth and life, a solitary human figure lies enveloped by the sinewy embrace of tawny pīngao on the volcanic sands of a Taranaki beach. This striking image captures a moment of profound stillness, a juxtaposition of human fragility and the stoic endurance of nature.

Pīngao, the golden sand sedge, is an indigenous treasure of Aotearoa, valued not just for its ecological role in stabilising sand dunes but also for its sacred place in Māori culture. The durable, sun-kissed fronds of pīngao are traditionally woven into tukutuku panels for marae decoration, kete (baskets), and whāriki (mats), each piece resonating with the mana of the land and the weaver’s artistry.

A huge thanks to for collaborating for this shoot.

In this bird's-eye view of Isel Park, ancient trees rise majestically, painting a tapestry of nature's grandeur. The park's rich history has allowed these arboreal giants to flourish. Indeed, several of these trees, nurtured over time, hold the distinction of being the largest of their species on record.

A brilliant, unexpected luminescence paints the horizon on Surf Highway 45. Pausing to document this juxtaposition of man-made intervention and the wild unpredictability of flames, I waited with bated breath for a vehicle to punctuate the scene with its fleeting, ruby-red tail lights. As if on cue, the local fire brigade arrived, making sure the flames didn't threaten the nearby powerlines.

A bit about me...

For me photography has always been a great excuse for an adventure.

I started off capturing underwater images of my spearfishing adventures around New Zealand. As I used my camera more and more I realised my interest was in photography and video rather than just spearing fish. Being able to come home after a trip to a remote reef and show people the amazing fish, anemones and crustaceans I saw became massively inspiring for me. Branching out from underwater photography I brought a DSLR camera for "dry land" photography, and since then have never looked back!

Over the 12 years I've been taking photos I've photographed everything from weddings and fashion shoots to remote caves and the rarest frogs in the world. My work has appeared in magazines, books, newspapers and advertising campaigns throughout New Zealand and overseas.

I’m also co-host of The Wild Podcast where Jonathon Carson and I interview amazing outdoors people and find out what makes them tick.
