Coastal Wolves 🐺

Wolves are a vital part of British Columbia’s wilderness. These intelligent animals form close-knit packs, usually made up of family members, working together to hunt and care for their young. Unlike solitary predators, wolves rely on teamwork and communication, often covering large territories in search of food.

British Columbia is home to both coastal and interior wolves. Coastal wolves (like the one you see in the photo), unique to the region, are strong swimmers and often hunt marine life, such as fish and even seals. Interior wolves, on the other hand, typically prey on larger mammals like deer, moose, and elk.

A wolf's howl can be heard from up to 10 kilometers away, serving as both a communication tool and a way to reinforce social bonds within the pack.

Taking a look back at my first coastal wolf interaction on International Wolf Day 🐺

It was a privilege beyond belief to be able to see this wolf in its natural space, and observe how she interacted with the landscape.

It’s important for us to remember that we’re in their space and to celebrate that we get to share this planet with such a remarkable species 🌎

Someone doesn’t realise how photogenic they are 🐻

It was a pretty special moment being able to sit in silence with this very content individual. This lone black bear wondered up the coastline sniffing out snacks on the rocks, with the occasional ear scratch in between. It’s moments like this in the wild that help me reflect on the space we live in, and how fortunate we are to share it with these incredible creatures 🙌🏻

Meal time 🐟

Watching this event take place was unbelievable. Hundreds of eagles in one area taking advantage of the tidal changes pushing the fish to the surface. I’ve never felt more conflicted about which direction to point the camera, there was action everywhere. Thanks to for having us and being patient with us whilst we geeked out on nature 🦅

Look at those eyes 👆🏼

We were very fortunate this week to spend some time with this beauty roaming the shoreline for a bite to eat. It was the most peaceful experience just sitting in silence, with the sun shining and the waves trickling in.

I’m still convinced that a huge predator like our local black bears shouldn’t have ears like that 🐻

This will be a night to remember 🌌

Last night I wrote “this is the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen. The aurora is pulsating, the sky is exploding above us”.

It was just the other day I was talking about planning a trip to go north to try and witness this explosion of colour and light. How lucky we are that this event showed itself to so much of the planet. It felt like for one night so much of the world stopped still in awe, nothing else mattered but this spectacle above us acting as a friendly reminder to keep our heads high and appreciate what’s around us 🙌🏻

What an incredible experience.

Thank you for the 📸

In my natural habitat 🎥

There’s nothing I enjoy more than roaming the wild and seeing the jigsaw pieces that make up how the natural world exists. Standing beneath these ancient old-growth trees with speckles of light passing through, just enough to allow layers of succession across the forest floor. Succession that feeds the black bear population I’ve been fortunate enough to spend time with since moving to British Columbia. As a filmmaker and storyteller I believe it’s vital to understand and appreciate the world that you wish to uncover. Spend time in it, listen to it, what do you feel when you’re there. Only then can you really convey a strong message about how to protect it 🌳 🐻

Majestic 🦅

I’m so fortunate to live so close to environments these raptors frequently visit and nest within. I’ve spent mornings watching them chase smaller birds over the ocean and spent evenings with them fishing over and over. The call of a bald eagle is up there with one of my favourite wildlife calls, it feels so iconic and reminds me of the & documentaries I watched growing up.

The snow arriving today in Victoria immediately reminded me of the guys up in Scotland. Working so closely on projects that revolve around this species it was pretty special being able to see them in person 🙌🏻

Dinner is served 🐻

It’s not been long since the end of the salmon run here on Vancouver island and I’m missing the chaos. There was so many magical memories during this period and I’ve got a bucket load of content still to get through, which I’ve no doubt will keep me busy until September when it all kicks off again 😅

Just into 2024 like 🐿️

Had a great time camped out at with .penman for a day&night of British wildlife behaviour 🐦

I’d say we got pretty lucky with squirrel leaps, a couple of pine marten appearances and an owl that decided it didn’t want to stick around. My time back in the UK has gone insanely fast, I’m sat posting this in the airport on my last leg to London before travelling back home to Canada this weekend and I feel like I arrived a week ago ⌛️

Safe to say I’m a happy man when a trip involves a good chunk of time out in the wild 🏔️

Having a beary good end to 2023 🐻⏳

Finally had some down time over the holidays to go through months of stills I haven’t had chance to edit, going all the way back to South Africa in June/July. I almost always film when I’m out in the field so it feels like a welcome treat when I sit down and have a session on Lightroom, it’s like I’m reliving these insane encounters all over again 🎥

Already looking forward to what 2024 is going to bring with some pretty special wildlife trips planned 👀

Sunset on the Salish sea 🐋

Had an incredible trip with on our last filming day of the year. From a pod of orca to lunging humpbacks right near us, and sea lions porpoising through major currents, it’s days like this that help you remember how special our marine life is and how important it is that we protect it 🦭

Thoroughly looking forward to seeing what 2024 brings in all shapes and sizes, with great optimism for the success of our marine life over the next year 🙌🏻

I want to see mountains again, mountains Gandalf 🏔️

I can’t describe the first time I saw this landscape during my first winter in Canada. You don’t really believe how epic it is until you’re stood at the foot of these gigantic beings. Thoroughly looking forward to what winter has to offer this year 🙌🏻

Itching to get back out and see these beauties 🐻

The start of the salmon run feels like an age ago, it’s been so intrinsic to my day-to-day over the last couple of months. Although there’s some concerns regarding the number of salmon we saw return this year across British Columbia, I believe we still have to make the most of what we have no matter how large or small. It’s a privilege being able to spend time with wildlife that I grew up dreaming about seeing one day, it’s purely a coincidence that they look so great on camera also 🎥

Round up 🦅 🦦 🐻

Had a great week for wildlife sightings this week, with bald eagles coming back in large numbers to Goldstream for the increasing salmon numbers. The river otter around that return each evening and feed right in the harbour. And of course the black bear which are very busy gaining weight before the colder months kick in 🏔️

Fall is by far my favourite season for colours and wildlife 🍂

Orca heaven 🐬🏔️

From filming apex predators on land during the salmon run to spending some time with these guys, it’s safe to say top of the food chain is looking healthy this year 🙌🏻

We’re fortunate here on the island that the resident orca families will stay around almost all year-round but take nothing away from how fantastic it is being able to be out on the water with these animals 🌊

Let me dip my head in peace 🐻

It was almost comical watching this one go in and out of the water to try and catch the salmon heading through the log dam 🐟

Can’t wait to get back out next week and hopefully have a few more moments like this before the end of the salmon run 🤞🏻

Hello little one 🐻

What a special moment it was to see this cub being taught how to fish for salmon, it was clear there’s still a lot of learning to do but with those ears I’m sure we have a good listener 🐟

We were incredibly lucky as we had decided to leave for the day and saw this mum and cub on the way out of the forest, fortunately there was just enough light left to get a couple of shots 🎥

The salmon run is in full effect 🐻

Had the most incredible experience spending time with a number of grizzlies on the mainland. With crystal blue glacial water and dozens of grizzlies all trying their luck at utilising the influx of thousands of salmon as they move upstream towards the end of their lifespan, it made for a truly special experience 🐟
