“Paul and I wrote the number on a coach journey between York and Shrewsbury. We were on the Helen Shapiro tour at the time. What puzzled us was why we’d thought of a name like ‘From Me To You.’ In fact, it had me thinking until only recently, when I picked up the NME to see how we were doing in the charts. Then I realised — we’d got the inspiration from reading a copy on the coach! Paul and I had been talking about one of the letters in the ‘From You To Us’ column.” - John

“The first thing Julian wanted to do in life, well, before he wanted to be an artist and then a musician, was to be a chef. He'd come home and say 'Why don't you bake cakes like my friends' mothers?' I'd say, 'Oh, Julian, go out and buy a Mary Baker cake mix and do it yourself!' That started him off! By the time he was 13, he'd disappear into the kitchen whenever we had visitors and emerge with beautiful canapes. Now he thinks nothing of cooking for ten or 15 people, and he does it so calmly.” - Cynthia Lennon

“John was an extraordinary man. Our relationship has shaped much of my life. I have always loved him and never stopped loving him. That’s why I want to tell the real story of the real John – the infuriating, lovable, sometimes cruel, funny, talented and needy man who made such an impact on the world. John believed in the truth and he would want nothing less.” -
Cynthia Lennon

July 20th 1968 - Jane publicly announced that her engagement to Paul McCartney had been called off.

On this day, Jane Asher was invited on Simon Dee’s BBC Television show “Dee Time“, and publicly announced that her engagement to Paul McCartney had been called off, an announcement that surprised McCartney himself.

I haven’t broken it off, but it is broken off, finished. I know it sounds corny, but we still see each other and love each other, but it hasn’t worked out. Perhaps we’ll be childhood sweethearts and meet again and get married when we’re about 70.

Jane Asher, interviewed by Simon Dee, on the BBC Television show Dee Time

She would repeat the same message to the London Evening Standard’s Ray Connolly, on October 12, 1968:

I know it sounds corny but we’re still very close friends. We really are. We see each other and we love each other, but it hasn’t worked out. That’s all there is to it. Perhaps we’ll be childhood sweethearts and meet and get married again when we’re about seventy.

Jane Asher

At this date, Paul McCartney was having a relationship with Francie Schwartz (she would join the Beatles during the “Mad Day Out” photo session some days later) and had already met Linda Eastman, who would become his wife in March 1969.

I watched the show with Paul and his father. This wave of shocked silence went through all of us. It was painful because she was announcing it publicly, and she didn’t leave it up to him. That’s the one thing Paul never wants to happen. He really is a control person.

Francie Schwartz – From “The Beatles: Off the Record” by Keith Badman

July 14th 1945 - Freda Kelly born.

Freda was the secretary to Brian Epstein and the English rock band the Beatles from 1962 through to 1972, and president of the group's official fan club.

Kelly worked with the band as it rose from local popularity to world-wide fame, and through its dissolution.

A 2013 documentary, Good Ol' Freda, chronicled Kelly's ten-plus year association with the group and its members.

Kelly was born in Dublin, Ireland to Irish parents. When she was 13, her family moved from Sandymount in Dublin to Liverpool, where by the early 1960s she had found work as a typist.

She became a fan of the Beatles after seeing them perform at the nearby Cavern Club, and soon became a devoted regular – by her own estimation, attending almost 200 of their shows, usually during her lunch break. The lunchtime shows were more casual than the evening performances, and in time Kelly struck up friendships with the members of the band.
