Second round Zoom interview today. Years before he passed away in 1997, my dad taught me how to tie a Double Windsor knot. For the life of me, I couldn't remember how to tie it. Then today, as I was getting ready for my Zoom call, I remembered it. It is almost as if the spirit of my dad was in the room with me and I remembered clear as day. That was my dad. He always took care of me, even now as an angel.

Passion is more important than ever in local radio today. Fewer people are doing more jobs, and many of the brightest and best have left the industry. I know the highs and lows better than most. Even in the darkest days, I remain committed to my career in this turbulent industry.

I have seen the difference one driven and creative person can make. I’ve seen it in others, and I’ve seen it in myself.

I know the pure joy of making an impact in the daily lives of listeners. I’ve witnessed creative radio marketing save small businesses and those who rely on them. I’ve seen the grateful tears of families who have lost everything in personal tragedies, and those in need, helped by the ability of radio to galvanize communities to make a meaningful difference.

For most of my life, I have been privileged to be part of this incredible career journey. I am ready to work harder and smarter than ever. I want to share my knowledge, my experience, and above all, my passion to help inspire a new generation in our industry.

Encouragement for radio professionals buffeted by the mayhem in our industry today is hard to find. That’s why, as Covid raged in one of radio’s darkest moments, Loyd Ford from Rainmaker Pathway Consulting Works came to me with an idea: let’s do a podcast devoted to uplifting radio pros and offering encouragement.
Now, with over 175 episodes, we continue our simple yet powerful mission of providing encouragement through inspiration, shared experiences, and ideas. This week, I was proud to produce three incredible episodes, including the Q3 Sales Event podcast, filled with valuable ideas for sellers in our industry.
When I started this project, I didn't realize just how much the encouragement offered in our podcasts would inspire me through difficult times on the beach. Giving back to an industry I love and to the people who have made it special to so many is a sacred mission for me. I’m honored that Loyd Ford chose me to help with this project.
I hope this dedication and passion reflect the type of professional I will be if I join your team.

Local radio has a mission. Forget the big companies syndicating, consolidating, downsizing, and outsourcing. The true mission of local radio today is to reacquaint advertisers and listeners with everything that made radio a prize for big corporations in the first place.
We need fired-up teams ready to take it to the streets.
It's time to banish anyone who uses the so-called “downturn of radio” as an excuse. Radio’s reach is still dominant. Talented and enthusiastic local teams across the country are fighting back against this perception. They go the extra mile for advertisers by enhancing spot production and launching dynamic campaigns that synergize traditional broadcast and digital media. These teams still win, generating monetary profits and improving the quality of life for their local communities.

It’s all about attitude.

We need radio team leaders in every department ready to embrace the mission. The mission: do more, work harder and smarter, and leverage the newest tools, like AI, while adapting to the ever-changing needs of listeners and advertisers. The goal is to deliver something that’s sadly missing in many business sectors today—SUPERIOR SERVICE.

I have always believed that I am fortunate to be an American. Our founding principles and Constitutional freedoms have created something truly magnificent from the chaos of world history. Our Founders wrote of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. During the Civil War, we struggled and died to form a more perfect union and secure the blessings of liberty for all.

Thousands of American soldiers have bravely fought against regimes that many are now poised to willingly elect here. We used to take pride in our diversity and strength, but now these are used as rallying cries to tear us apart.

We have never been perfect. Nothing forged by the hands of men could ever be. Yet, we have been honest about our failings as we have struggled to live by our creed that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights."

The music of many voices coming together in one nation, debating the way forward, is the American song. We have held to the principle that silencing any voice deprives us all. We should think hard before considering replacing our unique Bill of Rights with those who promise dictatorship from day one.

I pray that Americans will deliberate as never before when casting their vote in November. We have a choice not between two flawed individuals or two flawed political parties, but between two futures. We are not just voting for or against the incumbency of one man but the incumbency of one way of life, a way of life that has been the dream of freedom-loving humanity worldwide.

Will we willingly embrace the proposition that we must all continue to struggle for equality and a more perfect union together? Or will we allow one man to silence all our voices and choose the path forward for us all? Today, we are free to disagree about the issues that divide us. Let’s vote to keep it that way.

I have tried to live every day as a tribute to this amazing man who sacrificed so much to give me a great life. Working every day in a chemical plant, the toll it took on his health contributed to an early death. My dad told me growing up, "Son, I want you do have a job you love. If you do that you'll never work a day in your life". He was proud of my radio career, even if he made jokes to mom every time he saw a U-Haul on the road saying, "there goes Bo". That was his nickname for me. When I count my blessings in life, at the top of the list is my dad and mom. Having great parents is a gift that I will always cherish.

There are plenty of people in our industry angry right now. I understand that. For me, the main emotion I feel is sadness. I'm sad that those who once championed local radio, investing in and promoting it, have decided to give up. I'm sorry for the listeners who will miss that friendly local voice and the local content it provided.
Local radio was crucial to me growing up. It inspired me so much that I couldn't imagine doing anything else. Even though I've been "on the beach" for the last few months, my passion for radio is stronger than ever.
I've witnessed firsthand what dedication and hard work can do to turn around financially challenged stations. I've been part of dramatic turnarounds. I believe there are other solutions.
To all the radio owners who are making it, I salute you. Thank you for your dedication and effort in making your stations successful for your local communities, your stockholders, and your employees. Yes, employees should be part of that equation. There might be more to gain from listening to them than from silencing them and pushing them out the door.
The challenges facing local radio today ARE significant. I think the first place to look for answers is not in the boardrooms, but rather by gathering the people whose creativity and dedication to local listeners created the value that drove so many to buy radio stations in the first place.
I'd much rather see companies trying to find better ways forward than those just giving up on the communities and employees who counted on them.
