John Obot has successfully broken the Guinness World Record for the longest duration of a read-aloud marathon. Surpassing the previous record set by Indian citizen Rysbai Isakov, who held the title with 124 hours, Obot achieved an impressive 145 hours of non-stop reading.
John Obot, a graduate of Educational Management from the University of Uyo and member of Uyo Book Club, UBC, was born on Saturday, November 12, 1988, in Enugu state, Nigeria, to a broadcast journalist, Mr. John Obot and wife, Bernadette, a teacher.
John started his educational journey at the Army Children Nursery School in Akwunanwu, Enugu.

His formative years at the Presbyterian Primary School on Enwe Street in Uyo were marked by the indelible influence of his father, a broadcast journalist. This influence led to John's active participation in radio quizzes and debates, igniting his passion for knowledge. His father's unwavering demand for early reading instilled in John and his siblings an insatiable appetite for exploration through books.
John went to the Queen of Apostles Seminary, Afaha Obong, Abak LGA, his father's alma mater, for his secondary school education. Here, his creative flair blossomed. He became a school dramatist, captivating audiences with his performances, and an integral member of the press club. His responsibility included curating and transcribing news reports for publication on the school's press board. In debates, John was a standout, leading his class to victory over seniors in a memorable contest.
His journey continued at the Nigerian Christian Institute (NCI), Uyo, where he played a pivotal role in forming the school's Press and Literary Club. As its first president, he oversaw the production of dramas and news reports, even constructing and donating a press board at the entrance of the school chapel. An extraordinary moment in his youth occurred when, in Senior Secondary 1, he interviewed Senator Effiong Bob, who was visiting the school. Impressed by John's talent and in memory of his late father, a friend of the senator, Sen. Effiong Bob generously offered to pay for John's school fees until his graduation.

After completing secondary school, John faced a unique challenge when the courses he intended to study at the University of Uyo were delisted due to accreditation issues. In response, he made a wise decision to enroll at the International Management and Finance Institute in 2004 for a one-year Diploma in Computer Engineering and Maintenance.
Between 2004 and 2010, John thrived as a systems administrator at various computer and data processing centers, gaining valuable technical skills. However, his heart remained close to humanitarian pursuits. He joined the Heart of Love Foundation, an NGO dedicated to providing medical aid to the less fortunate. Serving as secretary and rapporteur, John traveled extensively across Nigerian states, a transformative experience that deepened his understanding of life and society.

In 2010, he resumed his formal education having gained admission into the Department of Curriculum Studies Educational Management & Planning, University of Uyo. His commitment led him to becoming the Secretary-General of the Curriculum Studies Students Association (CUSSA), where he played a pivotal role in drafting the association's first constitution.
Throughout his academic journey, John took on various roles, from being a media advisor, to managing One Campus Gist Magazine, Nigeria's Premier Campus News Magazine. He also contributed as a volunteer programs production assistant at Radio Nigeria Atlantic FM, Uyo.
In a twist of fate, John temporarily veered from mainstream academics to delve into digital and media skills such as web design, photography, graphics design, and multimedia production. His versatility and adaptability became his hallmarks.
Returning to academic in 2017, John assumed the formidable role of teaching his colleagues Greek Grammar & Syntax as a tutor, a testament to his intellectual prowess and dedication. He further expanded his impact by serving as a Media Advisor to the Special Assistant to the Governor on Students' Matters, where he played a crucial role in establishing and managing EDUWATCH, an online education news platform for Nigerian students and educators.
In the course of his studies, John served as a student teacher in various schools, imparting knowledge to the next generation. He even temporarily paused his teaching duties to prepare for the Guinness World Record Official Attempt for Longest Marathon Reading Aloud, a testament to his enduring passion for literature and education.

A vocal advocate for good governance, John's journey extended beyond the classroom to the airwaves. He evolved from being a consistent caller on news and current affairs programs on radio in Akwa Ibom State to joining the crew of XL Citizen Centa, the foremost news and current affairs program in the region. Here, he served as a Production Research Assistant and occasionally co-hosted the program.
John's multifaceted character is also marked by his deep Christian faith, combined with a passion for freethinking and open-minded analysis of religious traditions.

Obot’s journey to World record-breaking in marathon reading aloud began on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at Cityview Hall (LETTERS HOUSE), Watbridge Hotels & Suites in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. However, due to technical issues and power failures, his initial attempt of over 45 hours was invalidated.
Some of the over 40 books he read aloud within the six days include: Echoes of The Traditional Society written by a renowned Nigerian journalist, Akpandem James. Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe; Civil War Child by Nestor Udoh; Ibibio Nation: History and Culture by Oto-Obong Uwah; Eze Goes to School by Michael Crowder and Onuora Nzekwu; and Animal Farm by George Orwell etc.
While breaking the record on Monday in the task termed; ‘READERMANIA’ the state Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, Senator Representing Eket Senatorial District, Senator Ekong Sampson, Senator Representing, Uyo Senatorial District, Rt. Hon Aniekan Akpan, the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, the state Head of Civil Service, Chief Effiong Essien, ALGON Chairman in the state, Rt. Hon. Iniobong Robeson among others were there and joined in the count down to the 145 hours from 144:50 hours.

Key personalities across the country, including the first lady of the Akwa Ibom state, Mrs Eno Umoh, have stopped by to celebrate and encourage Obot during the reading marathon. The Akwa Ibom state governor, Pastor Eno, who is in the entourage of President Tinubu to United Nations General Assembly in New York, has also celebrated John Obot, in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary.
“This is what we all can do in our various fields with the right discipline, mindset, determination and focus. This is what the Akwa Ibom spirit represents: resilience, grit, determination, ‘can-do’ bravado and passion to excel. “Your success has ignited our reading culture and I look forward to celebrating you and other heroes and heroines during our forthcoming 36th State Anniversary.
“Congratulations again, great son of Akwa Ibom State,” Gov Eno said..

John Obot resides in Uyo with his family. He is a trained teacher and member of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria. It has been a remarkable journey of resilience and passion. He is setting out to lead a book culture campaign.
MyIbibio salutes John Obot Jnr on this feat.

Tribute to Prelate Sunday Mbang, CON
By John Cardinal Onaiyekan

It is a great honour for me to be invited to pay tribute to His Eminence Prelate Sunday Mbang, on this formal occasion here in his home environment in the city of Uyo. I take this opportunity to recall and celebrate certain salient points of his life journey at which providence brought our paths to cross.
I will recall six points briefly as follows:

1. Mbang, the Scripture Scholar:
Starting from the beginning, my first contact with Prelate Mbang was when he landed at the department of religious studies in the University of Ibadan as a young Scripture Scholar, doctorate graduate of the prestigious ivy league Princeton University in the United States. At that time Dr Sunday Mbang found himself in the department of religious studies whose emphasis was on academic and comparative study of the three main religious traditions in Nigeria. Its philosophy was encapsulated in the title of the official journal of the department ORITA, a Yoruba word meaning a meeting point on a cross road. This was a reflection of the idea of the founder of the department, the British academic, Rev. Prof Parinder. His interest was rather on the phenomenology of religions, with little attention and interest to faith convictions and commitment, which he suspected to be obstacles to objective professional academic exercise and approach to the study of religions. That was the reigning academic fashion in that era of rabid secularism. It is not surprising that the heads of that department namely; Parinder, followed by Idowu and at the time of the arrival of Dr Mbang, Awolalu, were all specialists in African traditional religion, even though they were all also ordained Christian ministers.
The department had three sections; African traditional religion, Christianity and Islam. The teaching staff was practically all ordained Christian ministers. These included also the teachers of Islam, in a section of Islam effectively boycotted by Muslims, students and teachers alike, who had moved into a later established department of Islamic and Arabic studies. The Christian section was quite weak, since it was neither a department, less still a faculty, of Christian theology. Landing in this environment, with a fine doctorate in Biblical studies from the prestigious Princeton University, Dr Mbang found himself very much underused, in terms of Biblical scholarship. At that time, I was the rector of SS Peter and Paul Major Seminary Bodija, where I also occupied the Chair of Sacred Scriptures, armed with my own doctorate in Sacred Scripture from the best Pontifical University in Rome. Our first meeting was enough to make us bond together. We shared interest in high level Biblical studies.
Soon Mbang was withdrawn to serve under Patriarch (Prelate) Prof. Idowu at the headquarters of the Methodist Church Nigeria. On my part, I too was withdrawn by the Pope from Bodija Seminary and appointed Bishop in Ilorin. But the bond established grew stronger from academic to pastoral and church leadership.

2. Mbang, President of CAN
Our next serious contact was in the context of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in which both of us got involved as young Bishops. He became president of CAN after Archbishop Okogie of Lagos. I served later as his Deputy. We worked very well together to stabilise the turbulent religious environment of those days. Much was also done to streamline the organisation of CAN with a lot of effort to draft a workable Constitution. Many government policies exacerbated the conflict situation between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria, making harmonious living together between us challenging. As CAN president, Prelate Mbang brought into play his tremendous attitude of peace building. Even among our different Christian groups, he had to calm frayed nerves every so often.

3. Mbang and Establishment of NIREC
This was due to the leadership and spirit of peace and harmony of Prelate Mbang. He facilitated a fruitful discussion and decision to reach out to the Muslim leadership in Nigeria for the purpose of creating a forum for dialogue in view of promoting better mutual understanding and reducing inter-religious tensions. He shared this proposal with the then President Olusegun Obasanjo during a courtesy visit with him at the Presidential Villa. The President jumped on the idea. He facilitated a meeting of the leadership of the CAN with the counterpart of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (SCIA).
The meeting took place at Sultan Maccido’s Palace in Sokoto, where, as if by miracle, a decision was taken to establish the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC). An inauguration date was promptly chosen for September 29, an event that was facilitated in the International Conference Centre, Abuja, with the leadership of Prelate Mbang and Sultan Maccido and with the President Obasanjo himself presiding over the event. Prof. Yusufu Obaje, who was then State House Chaplain, was given the charge of all the logistics, an assignment he carried out in a most admirable manner. It was natural that he became the first Coordinator of the Council, until he left office with President Obasanjo. So great was the role of Mr President in the establishment of NIREC that some rumours gained ground that the NIREC was established by government. But it was always understood by all concerned that the Council was a free association of the leadership of our two main religions. Subsequently a constitution was drawn up with the leadership under a co-chairmanship of the CAN President and the Sultan of Sokoto, an arrangement that has continued until now.
Prelate Mbang will forever be remembered as the ideological initiator of the NIREC. When his term ended, there was a peaceful transfer of Presidency to me. Our time together in leadership of CAN was a very exciting and spiritually enriching experience.

4. Mbang and Catholic/Methodist dialogue
Worthy of note is the role of Prelate Mbang in establishing a formal forum of dialogue between Catholics and Methodists in Nigeria. By divine providence, in 1979, the Pope appointed me a member of the international Catholic-Methodist Dialogue Committee, with seven members from each side. We met each year for a week in alternating venues, discussing doctrinal and pastoral issues to bring our communities closer together. It was for me a most significant experience and a good opportunity to get to know more about the Methodist Church. I was the only black person on the committee of 14 high level Church leaders and theologians.
Coming back home, I shared my experience of the International Catholic-Methodist Dialogue Commission with Prelate Mbang. At that time, I myself, providentially, had become President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN). We both agreed to replicate here at home the dialogue between our Churches at the global level. Thus began the bilateral Catholic-Methodist dialogue committee which is still active until now.

5. Mbang, the global Methodist leader
The leadership qualities of Prelate Mbang has been appreciated not only at home but globally. His emergence as the President of the World Methodist Council, making him the leader of all Methodists globally, was news of great joy and pride not only for the Methodist Church Nigeria but for all Nigerians, Christians and non-Christians alike. In that capacity, his performance was applauded all over the Methodist world. All this was God’s own doing, a wonder in our eye.
It was for me a personal pride when our own Prelate Mbang led a delegation of the Methodist Church to the Vatican and had a well- publicised private audience with the Holy Father, Saint Pope John-Paul II. His visit made a great impression on our Catholic Church leaders in the Vatican. The officials of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, which he visited with his entourage, told me later how impressed they were with my Nigerian brother Church leader. May the Lord be praised.

6. Mbang the Statesman.
For about three decades, Prelate Mbang was a national prominent Church man. He was a genuine “man of God’’ in the line of the great prophets of old who spoke in God’s name to both rulers and people of the nation. He proclaimed the truth to all and sundry in clear terms, without fear or favour. He did this with a deep sense of patriotism and a sincere love for the nation. He fully deserved the award of a Commander of the Niger, (CON). His prophetic voice continued to ring out till his last breath. He had an unflinching faith in the destiny of Nigeria as a truly great nation. It must have pained him not to have seen his dreams realised, as he made his final exit from this valley of tears. It is now up to us left behind to sustain his dreams, praying and working that the nation finds its way to the greatness that the Almighty and Merciful God has destined for it.
In the last few months and especially since the highly disputed Presidential elections of last February, the nation has been facing serious challenges and uncertainties about our national cohesion. All eyes are now on the courts to deliver a final, fair and true judgement. This should be as soon as possible, so that the nation may begin to stabilise and move forward.
The verdict, even of the Supreme Court, will certainly not please everybody. But we all have to prepare ourselves now to accept it as the best we can get, and move on to join hands to restore and rescue our nation. We do well to remember the wise saying of the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, JSC, who declared: “the verdict of the Supreme Court is final, but not necessarily infallible. It is not infallible, because it can be wrong, and one may not necessarily agree with it. But it is final, in the sense that there is no higher court to appeal to, except to the court of the Almighty and All Just God”. We pray for the courage to be sincere with ourselves, to forgive one another, to work for national reconciliation in order that we may achieve peace and genuine unity. We can hear Prelate Mbang sending this massage of peace and unity to our nation from his heavenly abode. May God save our nation.

7. Mbang and his autobiography.
On a final note, I am glad to report on this solemn occasion that the last honour that the Prelate Mbang conferred on me was to send me the manuscripts of his precious autobiography to review and to write a preface. This is an honour of which I shall be eternally grateful. The publication is for me what we in Christian literature call ‘’hagiography’’, literally meaning a “sacred writing”. Like the classical “Lives of the Saints”, it is a solid material, with valuable spiritual edification for the reader. It readily reminds us of the famous “Confessions” of St. Augustine. In this and in his other publications, he will continue to communicate with us from his eternal abode in paradise.

Conclusion:
Prelate Mbang, RIP, resquiescas in pace, rest in peace, while you keep an eye on the church of God you have left behind to continue the task of spreading the Good News of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ. Keep an eye also on your beloved nation of Nigeria, presently going through turbulent times and self-inflicted pains. We, whom you have left behind, will continue to sustain your stubborn faith in the basic goodness of the Nigerian people, of all tribe and creed, and in the ever abiding and all-powerful loving care of God over us. God bless Nigeria.

Known on social media as Hilda Baci, she started cooking on Thursday and continued until Monday – creating more than 55 recipes and over 100 meals designed to showcase the best of Nigerian cuisine in the marathon kitchen session.
Born on September 20, 1996, to Mr. and Mrs. Effiong Bassey of Nsit Ubuim, in Akwa Ibom state, Hilda was driven by an insatiable hunger to learn, she embarked on a culinary education journey, drawing inspiration from her mother, a culinary maestro in her own right. Her culinary prowess blossomed through her guidance and the nurturing warmth of the kitchen, adorning her with a unique flair that set her apart.
Baci schooled at Madonna University Okija where she studied Sociology. She was the host for "Dine on A Budget" on Pop Central TV, Dstv Channel 189.
“Nigerian cuisine is the best out there,” she said. “The more recipes are propagated, the more people will be willing to try it. Nigerian food is such comfort food,” she told CNN.
In May 2023, Baci embarked on a mission to break the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking time.
The 27-year-old graduate set up a four-day ‘cook-a-thon’ at Amore Gardens, Lekki, Lagos State.
Hilda broke the record which was previously held by Indian chef, Lata Tondon on Monday morning at 7:45 am.
Tondon had made meals for 87 hours, 45 minutes and 00 seconds.
Nollywood actor, Charles Okocha; actress, Kate Henshaw; singer, Tiwa Savage; media personality, Enioluwa, and many others appeared at the event.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also visited the venue on Sunday to cheer up Baci.
So far, Nigerian and World leaders have continued to celebrate Hilda, including Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice president Osinbajo, Senate President Lawan, President Elect-Asiwjau Tinubu, Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, DG World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, among others.
President Muhammadu Buhari says he shares the joy of celebrations as 27-year-old gourmet chef Hilda Effiong Bassey, aka Hilda Baci, makes history by breaking the world record of longest hours of cooking.
In a statement by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, on Monday May 15, in Abuja, noted the antecedents of the restaurateur, who dazzled at the Jollof Face-off Competition 2021.
He lauded her for preparing mouth-watering dishes that won the choice prize and settled an age-long rivalry with Ghana on which African country should own the trademark for cooking better jollof- rice.
According to him, Ms Bassey’s drive and ambition have brought more interest and insight into the uniqueness of Nigerian food as another cultural icon with huge tourism benefits. He hoped more young people would follow in her footsteps.
The president thanked the sponsors of Baci Cook-a-thon, government officials, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, celebrities from the bubbling music and movie industry, and fans of the chef for all the support that had brought glory to the country.
Also, individuals and Institutions have awarded Hilda with privileges and opportunities including Scholarship to PhD level by her Alma Mater, Maradona University, one year free flight tickets by Dana Air, landed properties, and several others.
Baci is not new to cooking competitions; she was a participant in the maiden edition of the Jollof Face-off Competition in 2021. The talented chef made Nigeria proud by winning the competition and walking away with a grand prize of $5000.
Baci is the CEO and Head Chef of MyFoodbyHilda.
