New ‘Kionasina’ Set For Early Morning Launching

A new ‘Kionasina’fautasi boat is set to be launched inside the Apia Harbour tomorrow, Tuesday 10 September 2024.
The Kionasina is the naming made famous in traditional fautasi boat racing by the village youth of Apia.
The crew who rowed the boat into the history of the popular water sport in Samoa made the switch from the village rugby team players to longboat rowers.
Prominent behind the switch from rugby to fautasi racing was the late Laauli Alan Grey.
He was the iconic rugby coach turned boat builder and skipper of the first Kionasina to dash across the Apia racing course.
The official launching of the new boat in the morning is sure to reopen loving memories of how it all started and the pride the racer brought to everyone involved moreso the village of Apia.

Why is there is so much opposition to the fundamental rights of Samoa’s Chiefs and Orators who have been responsible for the preservation of peace and tranquility in our village communities for thousands of years and are still functioning strong today?

CHOGM Phobia Gives Local Landscape Brisk Facelift

By Staff Writer

The general landscape appearance for Samoa is being transformed at a noticeably brisk pace, in preparations for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, CHOGM, on the 21-26 October 2024.

All indications point to a CHOGM-phobia developing in the national preparations.

The natural village setting along the roadside from Faleolo International Airport to Apia is where the new facelift for the country is catching the public travelling attention.

The flutter of Samoan flags alongside part of the road to Mulinu’u stands out inside Apia.

But it is only for now, it will hardly be any surprise if more are added in the coming days, to stretch all the way out along the peninsula.

This is after all were the heart of CHOGM will pulsate in the Parliament House and at the Court Building Complex.

UNHAPPY MOMENT AT VAITELE-UTA INTERSECTION

An unhappy moment seen on a busy section of the road.

A van with damaged headlights from a road accident held up traffic at Vaitele-uta briefly on Wednesday 4 Sept. 2024.

The flow of traffic at the intersection where it happened was held up briefly while work to drag it off the road was underway.

The damaged vehicle was removed by a tow truck to restore the free flow traffic.

The busy intersection for cars traveling in the area has had a fair share of traffic running unsuspectingly into trouble trying to drive through.

Teuila Festival Juggles With Third Of Normal Budget

By Staff Writer

The Teuila Festival started off quietly on Monday, after the usual Sunday choir singing was crossed off this year’s official opening programme.

The Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa launched the week long schedule of activities to highlight the occasion, at the start of the working week.

Sporting events like the popular fautasi race and Samoan cricket were struck off the programme a well.

Teuila organisers confirmed a budget of less than $100 thousand allocated for the festival this year or about a third of the normal amount set aside to cover the costs of the annual event.

No legitimate reason was given for the heavy budget cut but there is a general understanding that funds were being diverted for the hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting CHOGM in October.

PM Fiame underlined the theme that is the focus of the festival during her opening remarks at the start.

“Our Teuila Festival theme for this week “Enrich our Environment, Embrace our Culture” was adopted in line with the Samoa Tourism Authority’s continued drive for a sustainable industry, and in recognition of the vital role that our environment plays in promoting our destination,” PM Fiame addressed.

The Teuila was first created as a tourist attraction to boost the Tourism Industry similar to Fiji’s Hibiscus Festival.

The Miss Samoa pageant and the crowning of the new beauty queen highlights the activities of the week.

The new Miss Samoa will be announced and crowned on Saturday night.
