Escape From Pretoria is a new feature film starring Daniel Radcliffe. Based on a true story by Tim Jenkin and set in 1979, it follows two South Africans who are working to end apartheid.
My first post is related to converting an Adelaide street in to 1979 Cape Town, and in particular - two bus graphics we created.
To help establish Cape Town, I was tasked to create 2 advertisements for a bus. Very early on we agreed to try and get real branding and products if possible - but it involved contacting companies in South Africa. As anyone who has dealt with clearances before will know - it can be a very time consuming process!
The Production Designer Scott Bird found a reference photo (pic 3) from the 70s advertising FG Coffee - so that's where we started! In addition, milk powder was scripted - so we also approached Instant Klim as well to recreate their product and for an advert. Fast forward a month - and both agreed for us to recreate/create their advertisements (with a day or two to spare)! I'd started to prepare a plan b just in case.
We had some real reference to go by, so it was fun recreating the bus advertisements. As the bus we used was longer, the design had to change slightly to accommodate for the extra length.
Being so big and knowing how long it took to organise, it was great to be on set to see them and quite fun to see the onlookers reactions.
Special thanks to Aneta for her drawing work and the amazing Read Brothers Signs for their fast turnarounds!
More to come!
