Garrett Smith, US Navy Veteran, shares his story of living with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). He was diagnosed while in the military and was told the life expectancy was six to 18 months. That was more than six years ago. Garrett has lost the use of his arms, legs, is on a vent and uses assistive technology to talk. Yet he smiles every day and volunteers with I AM ALS to help other veterans with the disease. He decided instead of trying to beat ALS, he was going to embrace and live with it so he could keep a good quality of life and still be a great father and husband for his family. Was proud to take action with this group. As I toured the Capitol and met with legislators I couldn't help but think about power. If more people reach out, we can get gun laws passed. Don't give up. Gun violence should not be normal.

Met Garrett at the VA. In looking at his warm smile you would not know he has ALS. He cannot talk but by using eye assistance technology we had a great conversation. Been waiting to find a place to go for long term care. What an inspiration!

After Phil's paralyzing accident 33 years ago today, three things determined the trajectory of our future. First, my husband and I believed our family was going to be OK and that we wanted to continue to live in much the same way as we did before his accident. This was not going to be the end of the world. Second, just 8 days later on July 26, George H Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law giving persons with disabilities equal rights to programs and services for the first time ever. Third, because we had a right to participate, we worked tirelessly to remove barriers. The ADA is a complaint driven law meaning although the requirements for access are now in place, there is no penalty for noncompliance. This victory, although not complete is timely today!

A complaint against the Hales Corners Public Library alleging discrimination against people with disabilities has been resolved.
