There are several ‘Kops’ at various football grounds around the world, especially in Great Britain. The most famous of these (main stands) is at Anfield, Liverpool. But did you know all of them derive their name from the Spion Kop hilltop in Ladysmith, KZN? The battle field during the South African War or Anglo-Boer War from 1899 to 1902.

Five years ago today, I had the chance to visit a site described as the biggest symbol of Christianity in the world. Christo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) on top of Corcovado Mountain built between 1922 and 1931 is 30 metres on an 8 metre pedestal that serves as a small prayer room.

Nelson Mandela first was after 3 months. Thabo Mbeki fist was after 12 months. Kgalema Motlanthe served only 7 months as The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa and didn’t reshuffle. Jacob Zuma’s first was after 17 months and Cyril Ramaphosa’s first was after 9 months.

However they will look back and smile all the way to the bank with a guaranteed check of 1,25 million US Dollars. That’s over 17 million Rand.
