𝗢𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗡 | 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗿𝘂𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲

Today, who would believe that an Information Technology graduate has conquered the Universe? An annual prestigious battle of elegance, intellectual prowess, and competence all over the world is taking place.

Beating out 79 other candidates in the pageant's finals night held in Eliat, Israel, the 21-year-old beauty queen from India, Harnaaz Sandhu, was crowned Miss Universe 2021 on Monday morning, December 13, Philippine Manila time. Harnaaz’ win marks 21 years since India last won the crown, following Lara Dutta in 2000.

Two consecutive years, the crowned Miss Universe came from IT Industry, namely Miss Universe 2020, Andrea Meza who is a software engineer and its new successor, Miss India, Harnaaz Sandhu who is also an IT graduate. Truly, we cannot overlook their chosen career and the enormous power that these women wield.

In her introduction video, Harnaaz highlighted her advocacy. “I would like to inspire people by choosing strong characters and breaking stereotypes and stigmas.” Miss India, as irrefutable proof, broadens the spectrum of beautiful women in tech. She is an actress and a strong advocate of women’s empowerment, sustainability and limiting one's carbon footprint.

As an IT student, particularly studying software, technologies, business, multimedia, networking, and application development, I heard a lot of negative connotations from other people who labeled our degree as "effortless one." Degree shaming is nothing new; it happens all the time, regardless of the department or university you go to.

For many years, despite consistently ranking towards the top of the country's highest job- paying positions, the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) was considered a devalued degree. Miss India, on the other hand, openly presented herself as an IT graduate, shattering stereotypes and demonstrating that we aren't "just IT" and that we can also stand out for the universe and can make a difference in the world.

I am a firm believer in pursuing your dreams while remaining pragmatic. Don't get me wrong, university students like us are not offended when being mocked about what we people in tech are doing. It may be funny sometimes, but admittedly it becomes kind of irksome.

In my opinion, there is no such thing as a lousy degree; a worthless education is an oxymoron. People only patronize someone who enrolls in a well-known asian degree, while stigmatizing a specific degree, since they are clueless of what we are pursuing. Oftentimes, it stems from a place of ignorance.

Miss India is a phenomenal representation that anyone working in technology is something we should be proud of. Being a student in the technology field empowers us to rise to the top of the pyramid as we contribute solutions to other sectors, such as medicine, agriculture, business, and the environment, through the innovations we produce.

The cliché goes that ignorance is bliss, but sometimes it is not. It is our responsibility that we, in a defining moment of our history, make people working in technology be represented again.

So, who runs the world and the universe?
We, technology degree holders.
