PARIS – In a high-level bilateral meeting at the Élysée Palace, Ethiopia and France took decisive steps toward strengthening their economic and political partnership, signaling renewed European support for Ethiopia’s recovery and reform agenda. The discussions centered on debt relief, investment cooperation, and sustainable development, as the two countries reaffirmed shared strategic interests.
The meeting brought together senior officials from both governments, building upon the foundations laid during previous diplomatic engagements. It marks a new chapter in a partnership that has evolved over the past decade into one of Africa’s most notable North-South alliances.

Economic Cooperation and Debt Relief Prioritized
At the forefront of the dialogue was Ethiopia’s debt burden and the need for sustained international support to stabilize its economy.

Ethiopia is powering up for a digital future — but not everyone is convinced it’s heading in the right direction. As Bitcoin’s global value surges and mining activity rebounds after China’s historic crackdown, Ethiopia is rapidly becoming one of the most talked-about destinations in the crypto mining world. With cheap, abundant hydropower and a government eager to attract foreign currency, the country has already climbed to contribute an estimated 2.5% of the global Bitcoin hash rate. That figure could triple to 7% by the end of 2025.
On the surface, the opportunity looks golden. Multinational crypto giants like BitFuFu, BIT Mining, and Munich International Mining are flooding into the country, deploying thousands of machines and signing energy deals worth millions. Ethiopia, meanwhile, is earning around $65 million annually from Bitcoin mining revenues, monetizing its surplus energy, and securing a place on the global digital economy map.

But a deeper look reveals a growing unease.

Ethiopia is set to receive a substantial influx of foreign investment as five Chinese companies prepare to invest a total of $1.75 billion across the country’s mining and solar energy sectors. The agreements, announced by government authorities, reflect increasing global interest in Ethiopia’s industrial potential and align with the country’s broader economic reform agenda.
The investments are concentrated in two key areas: solar-cell manufacturing and mineral exploration, with some projects also involving the establishment of industrial zones to support long-term development.

Expansion of Renewable Energy Capacity
Among the investors is a Shanghai-listed company majority-owned by a global solar corporation, which plans to invest $250 million in the construction of a solar module and energy-storage manufacturing plant in Ethiopia. This project will help diversify the country’s energy sources and support the transition toward renewable energy.

Mogadishu in Peril as Al-Shabaab Advances, Donor Fatigue Cripples Regional Security Strategy
In a stunning diplomatic blow that could redefine the future of peacekeeping in East Africa, the United States has flatly rejected a plea from the African Union to fund a new stabilization mission in Somalia — throwing AUSSOM into disarray just months before its scheduled launch.
What’s at stake? Everything.
The African Union’s planned mission, AUSSOM, is meant to replace the outgoing AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) this July. But after a high-level AU delegation traveled to Washington in a last-ditch bid for financial support, they returned empty-handed. U.S. officials not only turned down the funding request, but also issued a harsh rebuke: no money without equal donor participation and a complete restructuring of the mission.

Families cry foul as Nairobi County launches surprise evictions in long-disputed estate battle
Nairobi, Kenya — A quiet Friday morning in Woodley Estate turned into a nightmare for dozens of families as county officials descended unannounced, throwing out tenants and their belongings over what they claim are unresolved rent arrears. Mattresses, baby clothes, pots, and framed family photos now lay scattered along the roadsides — tragic souvenirs of a decades-long legal dispute that has come to a boiling point.
The evictions, which began in the early hours of May 9, have left scores of residents homeless, hopeless, and furious. More than just a housing dispute, the dramatic scenes unfolding in the heart of Nairobi are raising critical questions about the rule of law, the right to shelter, and whether Kenya’s urban poor are being slowly erased from city centers in the name of development.

“They came without warning. No notice, no respect for the court.

How Kenya’s telecom titan is betting big on Ethiopia’s future—despite a currency crash and massive red ink.
Imagine spending billions to enter a new market—only to watch the local currency collapse, your losses skyrocket, and the competition cling to over a century of monopoly dominance. Most companies would run. But Kenya’s telecom giant Safaricom? They’re just getting started.
Safaricom, the Nairobi-based mobile operator best known for pioneering the mobile money revolution in Kenya through M-PESA, has become a household name across East Africa. With deep market pe*******on and innovation-led growth, it helped make Kenya a global case study in digital finance. Now, it wants to do the same in Ethiopia—Africa’s second most populous nation, long seen as the final frontier for telecom.
After four years in the Ethiopian market, Safaricom has posted a jaw-dropping 42 billion birr (over $720 million) in operating losses.

In a move that underscores the growing interdependence of East African nations, Kenya has officially begun formal negotiations to increase its electricity imports from neighboring Ethiopia. The talks are aimed at securing an additional 50 to 100 megawatts (MW) of power to meet Kenya’s surging energy demands—marking yet another step toward deeper regional energy cooperation.
Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) Managing Director Joseph Siror confirmed that discussions are currently underway with Ethiopia Electric Power (EEP). The proposed expansion builds on a landmark 25-year electricity deal signed in 2022, under which Kenya agreed to import up to 200 MW of Ethiopian electricity annually. That agreement already includes provisions to double the capacity to 400 MW in the near future.
But this is not just a numbers game—it is a geopolitical shift.

Could this be Africa’s Dubai moment? Ethiopia’s new mega-airport project is set to transform not just Addis Ababa—but the entire continent.
For years, Africa’s top airline soared above the clouds—while stuck with an aging airport back on the ground. But that’s about to change.

Mogadishu, the battered heart of Somalia, is once again under siege. In the early hours of Monday, explosions rocked the heavily fortified Halane base camp, sending a grim warning across the city. Mortar shells rained down on what was once considered the safest compound in the country — a stronghold housing the United Nations, Western embassies, and African Union forces.
