What are some really great movies that don’t get the credit that they deserve?

Enemy Mine from 1985 is an often-overlooked film that was based on a short story-turned-novella by Barry B. Longyear. Said story was the first part of his Enemy Papers series and set in the Manifest Destiny universe. The story is one of human fighter pilot Major Willis Davidge who crashes on the planet Fyrene IV and has to survive alongside the alien who shot him down, Jeriba Shigan (pictured above). The two start out hating each other’s guts only to end up close friends. Eventually, many other plot twists arise. The film and book alike have great moral messages about overcoming differences and the film, in particular, was nominated for the soundtrack and special effects (practical while also ahead of the time) despite the film flopping at the box office. The effects alone should give it a place in film history. It would still develop a strong cult following thanks to video rentals and sci-fi convention word-of-mouth. It still stands strong today for those who have seen it and holds a place in my heart as one of the first films I remember watching start-to-finish as a kid. Highly recommended for any sci-fi aficionado or anyone who enjoys hidden gems. The actual book series is also recommended.

Gene Wilder: When Laughter Was Only Half the Story - Gene Wilder, born Jerome Silberman on June 11, 1933, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment with his electrifying screen presence and a rich tapestry of roles that ranged from hilariously whimsical to deeply poignant. Remembered not just for his iconic film characters but also for his off-screen persona, Wilder's journey through the realms of acting, writing, and directing showcases a legacy of creativity and emotional depth.
The genesis of Wilder's interest in acting can be traced back to his childhood, marked by a critical moment when a doctor advised him to try making his sick mother laugh. This advice, given when he was just eight years old, not only introduced him to the power of comedy but also set him on a path towards performance. By the age of 11, after seeing his sister perform on stage, Wilder was inspired to pursue acting, taking his first formal steps in the craft at the age of 13.
Wilder's academic pursuit of drama led him from the local stages of Milwaukee to the University of Iowa, where he graduated in 1955 with a degree in Communication and Theatre Arts. Seeking to refine his craft, he then attended the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England, later returning to the U.S. to study under the renowned Stanislavski system in New York City. His time in the Army as a paramedic marked a poignant chapter in his early life, coinciding with the death of his mother from ovarian cancer.
Wilder's professional stage debut came in a production of "Twelfth Night" in Cambridge, Massachusetts. However, his true breakthrough came with the film "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967), where he played a small yet significant role that caught the attention of both audiences and critics. It was his portrayal of Leopold Bloom in Mel Brooks' "The Producers" (1967) that catapulted him into the limelight, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
This success led to a series of collaborations with Brooks, including the acclaimed films "Blazing Saddles" (1974) and "Young Frankenstein" (1974), the latter of which earned Wilder an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. His role as W***y Wonka in "W***y Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" (1971) further solidified his status as a beloved cinematic figure, despite the film's initial modest reception.
Expanding his artistic scope, Wilder took on directorial and writing roles in later films, such as "The Woman in Red" (1984) and "Haunted Honeymoon" (1986). His personal life deeply influenced his professional one, particularly during his third marriage to comedian Gilda Radner. Radner's death from ovarian cancer in 1989 had a profound impact on Wilder, leading him to become a staunch advocate for cancer awareness and support.
After starring in several films through the late 1980s and early 1990s, including "Funny About Love" (1990) and "Another You" (1991) with Richard Pryor, Wilder gradually stepped away from the Hollywood spotlight. His later years were dedicated to writing and painting, exploring new creative outlets that allowed him to express his nuanced understanding of life and art. Wilder's memoirs and novels provided insight into both his professional experiences and personal reflections.
Gene Wilder's emotional life was deeply influenced by his significant relationships, particularly evident in his marriage to Mary Joan Schutz in 1967. The adoption of Schutz's daughter deepened their familial bond, but the marriage ultimately succumbed to the pressures of Wilder's rising stardom and ended in divorce in 1974. During this tumultuous time, Wilder found love with Gilda Radner, a vibrant comedian and actress. They married in 1984, sharing a profound connection both personally and professionally. Tragically, Radner's fight with ovarian cancer ended with her death in 1989, deeply impacting Wilder and propelling him into active cancer advocacy.
Following Radner's death, Wilder's life took a hopeful turn when he reconnected with Karen Webb, whom he married in 1991. Webb, who had initially assisted Wilder with lip-reading for a role, became a significant source of comfort and partnership. The couple settled in Stamford, Connecticut, embracing a life away from the limelight focused on creative and philanthropic efforts. This period was one of personal reflection and artistic exploration for Wilder, who dedicated much of his time to writing and painting, finding solace in these pursuits.
Gene Wilder passed away on August 29, 2016, but he left behind a legacy filled with laughter, creativity, and compassion. His films continue to delight audiences around the globe, and his off-screen efforts to combat cancer and support those in need speak to a man who used his artistic platform for profound humanitarian efforts. As we revisit his body of work, from the comedic genius of W***y Wonka to the touching vulnerability in his dramatic roles, Wilder's career encourages us to appreciate the transformative power of art in illuminating the human experience.
Gene Wilder's life and work serve as a testament to the impact one actor can have on the world, not only through the characters he portrayed but also through the heart and sincerity he brought to every part of his life. His journey from a young boy in Milwaukee to a renowned star in Hollywood shows the extraordinary reach of talent and kindness combined.

Billy Drago: An Unforgettable Villain in 'The Hills Have Eyes' - Billy Drago, born William Eugene Burrows on November 30, 1945, in Hugoton, Kansas, carved a unique niche in Hollywood with his compelling portrayals of villains. Known professionally as Billy Drago, he had a career that spanned decades, leaving a lasting impact on both television and film.

Drago's childhood in the rural town of Hugoton was marked by frequent visits to the local movie theater, where his parents would drop him off. These early experiences ignited a passion for cinema that would shape his future. His family background was diverse, with claims of Romani descent on his mother's side and Native American heritage on his father's side. He later adopted his grandmother's maiden name, "Drago," to avoid confusion with another actor, setting the stage for his professional journey.

After high school, Drago initially worked as a journalist for the Associated Press. His career took an interesting turn when he transitioned to radio, where he became a popular voice, first in Canada and then in New York City. This stint in radio was followed by a brief period with a touring theater group and work as a stuntman at Boot Hill in Dodge City, Kansas. His diverse experiences eventually led him to the University of Kansas, where he further honed his acting skills by joining an acting company after graduation.

Drago's acting career officially began in 1979, and he quickly made a name for himself with roles in films like 'No Other Love' and 'Windwalker.' His early work showcased his versatility, but it was his performance in the 1985 film 'Pale Rider,' directed by Clint Eastwood, that started to set him apart. In this western, Drago played Deputy Mather, a role that allowed him to explore the darker facets of his acting range. The defining moment of Drago's career came in 1987 when he portrayed the menacing gangster assassin Frank Nitti in Brian De Palma's 'The Untouchables.' This blockbuster film brought him international prominence and solidified his reputation as a master of villainous roles. His chilling performance as Nitti, an adversary to Kevin Costner's Eliot Ness, was both memorable and unsettling, earning him critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.

Following the success of 'The Untouchables,' Drago continued to take on roles that highlighted his ability to portray complex antagonists. He appeared in numerous television series, including guest spots on 'Hill Street Blues,' 'Moonlighting,' 'Walker, Texas Ranger,' and 'Trapper John, M.D.' His versatility as an actor was evident as he seamlessly transitioned between television and film, taking on diverse roles that showcased his range.

In the 1990s, Drago found success with recurring roles on television. He played the outlaw John Bly in 'The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.,' a role that allowed him to delve into the Western genre once again. However, it was his portrayal of the demon Barbas on the WB series 'Charmed' that truly endeared him to a new generation of viewers. Barbas was initially intended to be a one-episode villain, but Drago's performance was so compelling that the character appeared in five out of the show's eight seasons. His ability to bring depth and nuance to the role of Barbas made him a fan favorite and demonstrated his enduring appeal.

Drago's talent extended beyond traditional acting roles. He was featured in Michael Jackson's 2001 music video "You Rock My World" and played a mysterious stranger in the Mike + The Mechanics music video for "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)." These appearances further showcased his versatility and willingness to explore different aspects of the entertainment industry. Throughout his career, Drago continued to take on roles that challenged and intrigued him. He appeared in Gregg Araki's 2004 film 'Mysterious Skin,' which was hailed for its bold storytelling and strong performances. Drago's role in the 2006 remake of 'The Hills Have Eyes' as Papa Jupiter added to his repertoire of memorable villains. He also participated in Takashi Miike's 'Masters of Horror' episode "Imprint," a project known for its intense and controversial content.

Despite his reputation for playing villains, Drago's off-screen life was marked by warmth and dedication to his family. He was married to actress Silvana Gallardo from 1980 until her death in 2012, and he had two sons, Derrick Burrows and Darren E. Burrows. Darren followed in his father's footsteps, becoming an actor himself. Billy Drago's career was a testament to his dedication and passion for the craft of acting. His ability to embody complex and often sinister characters left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry. From his early days in Hugoton, Kansas, to his rise as a beloved and iconic figure in Hollywood, Drago's journey was one of perseverance and talent.

Drago's filmography is extensive, with notable roles in films such as 'Cutter's Way' (1981), where he played the Garbage Man, and 'Pale Rider' (1985), where he brought the character of Deputy Mather to life. He continued to make his presence felt in films like 'The Hills Have Eyes' (2006), where he played the menacing Papa Jupiter, and 'Low Down' (2014), where he portrayed Lew in his final film role. On television, Drago's appearances were equally impressive. His guest roles on shows like 'Hill Street Blues,' 'Moonlighting,' and 'The X-Files' showcased his versatility and ability to adapt to different genres. His portrayal of John Bly in 'The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.' and Barbas in 'Charmed' left a lasting impact on audiences and solidified his status as a beloved character actor.

Billy Drago's passing on June 24, 2019, in Los Angeles marked the end of an era for fans of his work. He was 73 years old. Despite his departure, his legacy lives on through the memorable characters he brought to life and the impact he had on the world of entertainment. In a career spanning four decades, Billy Drago's ability to captivate audiences with his performances, particularly as a villain, made him a standout figure in Hollywood. His journey from the small town of Hugoton, Kansas, to the heights of international fame is a testament to his talent, perseverance, and passion for acting. Whether on the big screen or in the world of television, Drago's contributions to the industry will be remembered and cherished by fans and colleagues alike.
