4 days late, but I’m going live in the next 10 mins to talk about Dred Scott

24/03/2022

Hey y’all! So Dred Scott has been on my mind a lot lately, and I was thinking about how influential of a case it is, how the effects still reverberate through American society today.

I’m working on my notes to discuss the Scott V Sanford Supreme Court case. It is the most shameful decision made by the Supreme Court, this fact is backed up by nearly every legal scholar.

You can draw a direct line from Scott V Sanford to the civil war, the failure of reconstruction, implementation of the Jim Crow era, the haydays of the K*K, to the systemic incarceration and murder of black people.

Dred Scott is why everything in America is about race, it was White Americans that created the environment in which we all struggle to make sense of.

So I hope you tune in for the live, which will happen at some point on Friday.

Hello everyone! Long time since we last spoke. Life happened and I’m back to make another attempt at getting this project off the ground.

I’m not going to shoot myself in the foot and list off any planned projects, even tho I do still have them in the works. Working on this project has deepened my respect for other content creators.

You may see me live here and there, as well posts about books I’m reading, articles, etc. I’ll be sharing that kind of content. I’m hoping to post more writings on a regular basis. Nothing wild, but hopefully something folks will take a minute or two to read.

Finally, I’m interested in answering & providing direction to resources for questions you may have. I’m by no means an authority on this history, but I’m confident I can refer you to people who are and can give a nuanced explanation.

My piece on Ethnic Racism is coming along nicely. Currently I am working on examples in modern times, as I feel those examples are less clear than in the times of Yore.

I really feel that understanding ethnic racism will be extremely important for fellow minorities, as there can be a lot of misunderstandings. I also believe this will shed light on Colorism and why it can be so prevalent.

To be clear before my piece goes live: I wholeheartedly believe ethnic racism is more akin to a survival instinct than anything else. The more I read, the more confident I am in that assessment.

I really hope everyone who reads it will approach it with an open heart and mind. If you find yourself in disagreement with my writing, I would really love to hear from you. Iron sharpens Iron and more perspective can only broaden mine and everyone else horizons.

I hope your Sunday is going well!

Hello everyone.

I had a mini stroke.

I was told writing and using my brain will help me heal. I’m going to try and put out some blogs. Live’s unfortunately aren’t an option, it’s difficult to talk, much easier to write, as I can take my time to collect my thoughts.

Thanks to everyone who’s still hanging around throughout this long hiatus.

Hello everyone. I’m planning a series of lives.

My topic will be the systemic/structural nature of racism. I will also be discussing “ethnic racism”.

This is a set up for my live, which will be more in-depth on how Religion played a major role in the codification of Black bodies as cargo.

Thanks y’all

Hello everyone, it’s been a while. Things in life are getting to a point where I can keep an erratic schedule for random topics within the realm of Black History.

As you can see, this is the book I’m currently working my way through. While working on the podcast side of On the Legacy of Black Cargo, I realized I needed to slow down and really take my time to do this story justice. So many things happen during Reconstruction that have both big and small impacts on American life.

While I’m reading Stamped from the Beginning, I’ll pop in with thoughts about the concepts, histories, etc. that will be explored in this book.

I hope this finds you all in good health.

Quick updates!

Hello everyone! I finally have completed my writing on Passive Eugenics. It's focused solely on Eugenics/ Passive Eugenics. I hope you find this educational. Compensation for my work is NEVER mandatory, but always welcome if you feel so inclined.

Passive Eugenics:

Passive Eugenics was coined by James E. Bowman. It is a further understanding of the overall concept of Eugenics.

What is Eugenics?
Eugenics, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is the practice or advocacy of controlled selective breeding of human populations (as by sterilization) to improve the population's genetic composition.

Eugenics is an old idea that’s been reinvented throughout history. One of the earliest and most famous writing on Eugenics is found in Plato’s Republic, in which he discusses the need for the state to monitor and control reproduction of its citizens. Rome, Athens, and Sparta all practiced infanticide as a form of phenotypic selection. Sparta in particular was praised by Hi**er, who called it the first "Völkisch State" (which is/was a German ethnic and nationalist movement). Rome had the Twelve Tables of Roman Laws, the fourth Table stated that those with physical deformities must be put to death.

Our modern understanding of Eugenics comes from Sir Francis Galton, half-cousin of Charles Darwin. Galton coined the term “Eugenics”. Galton, having read Darwin’s ‘Origin of Species’, began to build off Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection. To put it frankly, Sir Francis Galton believed that the selective breeding techniques used with animals to exaggerate specific features could be applied to human reproduction (apparently, he’d never heard of nor seen how selective breeding worked out for the royals, a la Emperor Charles V). His reasoning is that societies that have protected the vulnerable were weakening their own by going against natural selection. Galton also believed that intelligence and talent were hereditary, which was then expanded to include other “inherited traits” such as criminality.

I’m rambling a bit, but for further reading, look up Charles Davenport, an American scientist who is credited with taking Eugenics to the “scientific” level.

Eugenics can be broken down into subcategories: Active and Passive Eugenics. Active Eugenics is the overt method of employing eugenic policies, which can be broken down further into two more subcategories:

• Positive Eugenics is the practice of encouraging people groups with “good genetics” to have more children.

• Negative Eugenics is the practice of discouraging “undesirable” people groups from reproducing.

Passive Eugenics is the covert method of employing eugenics. Passive Eugenics by its nature is supposed to be more palatable and gives those practicing eugenics “plausible deniability”. Simply put, Passive Eugenics is denial through subtle means. It’s about elimination by neglect and dereliction of duty.

Here are some examples of Positive, Negative and Passive Eugenics:

1. Positive Eugenics: incentives for peoples with “desirable genetics”, like cash. Policies and institutions which encourage desirable people to reproduce such as s***m banks with eugenically desirable criteria required for donors to donate s***m, such as intelligence, eye color, etc. which are then listed for users to consider.

2. Negative Eugenics: Forced sterilization, immigration laws which base entry to the country by way of race, ethnicity, religion, or nationality. Prohibition of marriage amongst those considered eugenically undesirable, as well as euthanasia.
a. Negative Eugenics has historically been instituted against racial minorities, poor communities (including poor whites), immigrants, people living with disabilities and neuro-divergent folks.

3. Passive Eugenics: Pro-choice people voting against child welfare initiatives. Setting up and then underfunding Free Clinics. Donald Trump’s unwillingness to take an active role in managing the effects of the Pandemic which has led to the death of 500,000 people. Healthcare so expensive millions of people are denied access through lack of funds.

I personally feel understanding Passive Eugenics is especially important when considering policy proposals, upcoming legislation, and researching politicians and their voting history. With an understanding of Passive Eugenics, you can take a more critical eye to all things politics and ensure that the policy proposals we’re supporting aren’t harmful in a subtle way. The more education we all have, the more effective we can be in ensuring a progressive future for ourselves and those who will come after us.

If you have any questions, tag me and I’ll either provide an answer and/or provide links to resources. I hope you chose to reject Passive Eugenics going forward.

Hey everyone, as I was wrapping up my notes on Individuality, I came across new information that I want to incorporate into my notes for the live. If you’ll forgive me, I will deliver that to y’all as soon as I can! 🖤✊🏾

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to check in with some updates:

1) I have nearly “finished” my research for episodes 1 & 2. I’m currently working on writing the script.

2) I’m trying to decide on episode length, which will make writing my script easier. I’m thinking between 15-30 mins long per. My attention span is relatively short currently, with everything going on personally.

3) I plan on doing a live on Saturday, and talking about white individualism, it’ll be another short 5 min talk I think.

4) I should have blog on Passive Eugenics published soon.

I hope you’re all having a great start to your weekend. 🖤✊🏾

28 films that don’t involve Black Trauma. Black culture has more to offer than trauma. Our culture is rich and storied, with many facets, just like other cultures. Happy Black History Month! 🖤✊🏾.

Movies to watch during Black History Month that aren't centered on trauma.

Hey y’all, check back here cause in the next couple days, I’m going to post a follow up to my video today. I want to transition into the book that inspired the video. My follow up will talk specifically about medial racism and medical neglect. There’s a beautiful quote in the book, “racist outcomes are not necessarily precipitated by racist intentions”. I will expand on my thoughts in relation to that quote as well as the mission and purpose of the book, Reproductive Injustice: Racism, Pregnancy, and Premature Birth by Dána-Ain Davis

Here’s a cute Cappybara as tax 🖤✊🏾

Update: This will need to be pushed back to Friday at 8pm. I just need some more time to make sure I’m conveying my thoughts accurately and appropriately. Thanks ✊🏾🖤

Hello everyone! I hope your week is going well so far! I just wanted to give y’all a heads up, as I plan to do another live video on Friday at 6pm. I’m going to talk about the book Reproductive Justice. It’s got a special place in my heart, being a mom to 5 kids! So join me, and let’s chat about this book!

I’m kinda thinking that once I get my first series out, it would be fun to do a kind of book club type of deal with my episode sources. What do you think about that? Let me know in the comments! ✊🏾🖤

Barracoon: The Story of the Last "Black Cargo" By Zora Neale Hurston

Reconstruction: America's Unfinished Revolution 1863-1877 By Eric Foner

Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom by David W. Blight

In 'Barracoon,' Zora Neale Hurston challenges the American public’s narrow view of the African continent, the transatlantic slave trade, and the diasporic cultures that came as a result of it.
