‘You’ve done well’ — Buhari commends Tinubu, says Nigeria complex

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has commended President Bola Tinubu, saying the president has done well despite the complexity of managing Nigeria.

Buhari made this commendation when he received the comptroller-general and members of the management team of the Nigeria Customs Service in Daura, Katsina State, on Sunday.

According to Buhari, governing Nigeria is a tough job for anyone, adding that there isn’t much anybody can do to help the country.

He noted that President Tinubu has performed well since getting into office, despite the economic hardship experienced by Nigerians across the country.

RIVERS ASSEMBLY SET TO FURTHER AMEND LOCAL GOVERNMENT LAW
.. Commits Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) (Amendment) Bill to Committee

The Rivers State House of Assembly at its 118th Legislative Sitting, on Monday, gave First Reading to the Rivers State Local Government (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

Presenting the Bill, the Member representing Omuma Constituency, Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo averred that the Bill seeks to further amend the Rivers State Local Government Law No 5 of 2018 and other matters connected thereto; adding that the Bill has four clauses and when passed may be cited as the Local Government(Amendment) Law, 2024.

Also, the House debated on the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools)(Amendment) Bill, 2024 after the Bill was read the Second Time.

Leading the debate, the sponsor of the Bill, Hon. Tekenari Granville urged his Colleagues to support the Bill which merely seeks the return of Kalabari Girls High School, Buguma to the government, because it was originally built through community effort several years ago; but was erroneously categorized and ceded to church as Mission School in 2005.
He stated further that after the school was ceded to the Church, it was abandoned, and the previous administration in the State graciously renovated the school to its present enviable status.

Contributing to the debate, other Members expressed their support for the Bill, stating that the school should be returned to the Government for better management. They added that the school is now well positioned to cater for the educational needs of the female gender in Asari Toru Local Government Area and beyond.

Commenting on the Bill, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule commended the Sponsor of the Bill, stating that the Bill is a people oriented Bill, which is the hallmark of the Tenth Assembly.

The Speaker explained that the intendment of the Bill is innocuous, because it simply seeks to return the Kalabari Girls High School, Buguma to the government. He hinted further that until 2005 when the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) (Amendment) Law came into force, the school was under the management of the State government.

Commenting further, the Speaker said, regrettably the church that took over the school allowed it to wallow in a deplorable state, but, for the magnanimity of the Nyesom Wike administration, the school was completely renovated and rehabilitated with new structures and equipment; stressing that despite the present enviable state of the school, it is not functional. "So, the essence of the Bill is to legally empower the State government to take over the administration of the school to make it serve the purpose for which it was built", he emphasized.
The Bill was later committed to the House Committee on Education for further legislative scrutiny.

I was paid N10,000 for my first movie role — Rita Dominic

Nollywood actress Rita Dominic has revealed that she was paid the sum of N10,000 for her first movie role.

Rita Dominic made this revelation in a recent interview with Joy 99.7 FM in Ghana.

When asked about the lowest amount she has ever received for a movie role, she said, “The first film I did, the filmmaker paid me N35,000. But he owed me N25,000 for how many months. In fact, he didn’t even pay me the balance. He paid me only N10,000.”

The actress said when she started acting, Nollywood wasn’t lucrative but she was driven by her passion.

She said “I just wanted to be an actor. And to be honest, there was no money in Nollywood back then. We were just doing it for passion. We have the passion for the art which was what fuelled us.

“It was very challenging. But we just kept doing it until the industry got bigger and bigger. And obviously, the pay became much better.”

DO NOT ALLOW FOOD CRISIS TO HAPPEN IN NIGERIA, GOVERNORS TELL FG

The Nigeria Governors' Forum is pushing for an increased crop production that will ensure food security in Nigeria to avert food related crisis.

Some members of the forum had therefore, visited the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in Abuja to emphasise the urgency of the situation.

The visit was part of the ongoing collaborative efforts between the federal and state governments in order to ensure smooth implementation of the second phase of the 2023-2024 dry-season farming.

They met with the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari and had discussion with him.

On the delegation were the Kwara State governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq; Taraba State governor, Agbu Kefas; Ondo State governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa; and Kogi State governor, Ahmed Ododo.

Governor Abdulrazaq, who is also the Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum, stressed the need for an adequate attention paid to achieving food security in order to ease the harsh living conditions of Nigerians.

He called on the Minister of Agriculture to work hard to meet the food targets of the federal government.

Governor Abdulrazaq assured that the governors of the various states of the federation are ready to work with the ministry to achieve the expected increase in food production.

“We could not achieve much with the CBN Anchor Borrowers programme, it was very challenging.

"The issue of food security is a one-stop-shop and we need to concentrate on what we are doing.

"We need to concentrate on what we are doing for the dry season farming.

"The minister has come up with a programme on cassava, rice and maize and we want to engage in that programme and urgently make sure we improve on our yield and deliver to the Nigerian population.

“We want to get to a stage where we export our food. What we have now is that, because of the devaluation of our naira, Nigeria’s food being exported to West Afric

Adgidzi listed the the farm inputs to include 92 irrigation pumps; 40 solar-powered knapsack sprayers; 8 tricycles; 4 power tillers; a set of improved stainless steel rice steam parboiler; and 8 garri processing equipment including grinding machine, communal fryer, hydraulic presser, and cassava chipping machine.

In his speech, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Water Resources, Umar Abubakar Dan’akano, called on the beneficiaries to utilise the inputs to achieve the best results, and commended the FG and IFAD for initiating the programme.

Court acquits Rivers State University lecturer of s€xual assault charges filed against him by female student

A Chief Magistrate Court In Port Harcourt, Rivers state, on Monday, September 25, discharged and acquitted a lecturer of the Rivers University, Professor David Ogbonna, of charges of alleged unlawful and indecent s€xual assault against a female student.

On June 28, 2022, the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Port Harcourt, had arraigned Professor David Ogbonna on one count charge of unlawful and indecent assault against a twenty-one-year female student of the institution.

Delivering judgment in the case on Monday, the court, which was presided over by Chief Magistrate Poromon Menenen, discharged and acquitted Professor Ogbonna accused of unlawful and indecent assault on a female student by inserting his p£nis in her va**na in his office on the University campus. The court held that the prosecution team failed to prove their case.
In his judgement, the Chief Magistrate held that the phone the female student claimed she used to record Professor Ogbonna’s discussion with her on the day of the alleged incident was never tendered as an exhibit during the trial.

It also stated that the disc the female student claimed she transferred the recording to, was not also tendered during the trial.

The Magistrate stated that the underwear the female student claimed had a semen stain after she was allegedly unlawfully assaulted was not subjected to a forensic examination. The prosecution team failed to call the Health Worker who conducted a medical examination on the female student to come and testify. Magistrate Menenen said the prosecution team also failed to provide Chidinma to testify about who the female student claimed left her and the Professor in the lecturer’s office after both came to his office.

He maintained that there was no substantial evidence to prove the case of unlawful and indecent assault against Professor David Ogbo
