Fort Jesus ❤️🇰🇪

It is a world heritage site that was built by the Portuguese between 1593 to 1596. It was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2011. It houses a museum that displays a collection of ceramics and pottery used by the different cultures and communities that traded along the Kenyan Coast. There are also numerous ruined buildings within the fort, the notable one being the Omani house that features Omani jewellery and early Swahili cultural artefacts. The park is always open from 8:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m, from Monday to Saturday.

As the drought intensifies in Kenya, former watering holes can become death traps for elephants. Just over a week ago, our team received reports of a bull elephant in his 30’s stuck in the mud of a drying waterhole.

Although the elephant was spotted outside our project area, our team quickly responded and rushed to the scene. It took the combined efforts of our rangers and other staff, as well as teams from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Tsavo Trust and Kenya Wildlife Service to free the exhausted bull from the mud. After a struggle, they were able to use ropes around his body and several vehicles to pull him out and lift him to his feet.

Thankfully, the elephant was not hurt and is expected to make a full recovery back in the wild, where it will play a critical role in maintaining a resilient population. This mission underscores our belief that all species have an intrinsic right to exist and prosper on our planet. We would like to extend a sincere thank you to every team member involved in this important rescue mission.
