In 1899, a relatively small silver discovery about 14 miles south of present day Tonopah by James Court and T. J. Bell resulted in the small mining community of Southern Klondike. Little did they know, at the time, that this small strike would lead to some of the richest discoveries in the United States and elevate Nevada out of an economic depression that the state has been suffering since 1893.

Within 20 miles of Klondike the towns of Tonopah and Goldfield would flourish bringing thousands of people to central Nevada.

Episode 11 of The Sawtooth Chronicles, Southern Klondike is now available wherever you get your Podcasts or at the link below.

The new Sawtooth Chronicles

In the 1890s, central Nevada was relatively unexplored. Several springs and seasonal layovers were used by the local native Americans, sheep herders and the the occasional prospector. The discovery of Tonopah just didn’t happen overnight. A series of events led to the discovery that “Saved Nevada.” Tonopah. A small discovery about 14 miles south of Tonopah by James Court, named Southern Klondike, later Klondike, led Jim Butler to the discovery of the strike that saved Nevada.

Join me in the next episode of The Sawtooth Chronicles and learn about how the discovery of Klondike led to the saving of Nevada.

In July of 1997, geologist Lane Griffin and his partner was surveying mines in Goldfield, for a mining company, to assess their viability. “It was late in the day, we had examined the geology and underground workings of five mines already…… This would be the last shaft of the day, one of the many on the historic Mohawk claim… “
Griffin and his partner would eventually enter the shaft and what they discovered is summarized by Bill Metscher, one of the founders of the Central Nevada Historical Society, “It was one those lucky finds that every collector, archaeologist and historian dreams about.” - Central Nevada’s Glorious Past.
They discovered a treasure trove of garbage that had been thrown in the shaft between 1910 and 1913.
Join me in the next episode of The Sawtooth Chronicles and discover the amazing find that gives us a glimpse in the lives of central Nevada in the early 20th Century. Literally, “One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure.”
