Why does Vanuatu still need help from Australia and China, and why can’t it do everything by itself? What would happen if their support was removed?
Vanuatu continues to need support from partners like Australia and China because its economy is small, its population is limited, and its geography makes development costly. Big projects such as roads, hospitals, ports, and schools require outside funding, technology, and expertise. External aid is also critical in times of natural disasters, for economic growth, and for training and capacity building.
Vanuatu cannot yet do everything alone because it doesn’t have enough financial resources, advanced technology, or workforce size to sustain large-scale development. At the same time, it must carefully balance these partnerships to protect sovereignty and ensure benefits for its people.
If Australia and China withdrew support, Vanuatu would face major challenges: stalled infrastructure, weaker disaster response, reduced economic growth, and slower skills development. But it could also find opportunities: relying more on local resources, strengthening Pacific regional cooperation, diversifying partnerships with other countries, and reinforcing traditional systems for resilience.
