Heat stress in dairy cows can affect various enzymes, impacting their overall health and productivity.

Because this is such an important and often underlooked issue during the summer months, I am listing some of the metabolic problems that will ultimately sacrifice your dairy’s profitability. It all starts at a molecular level!

Key enzymes affected by heat stress include:

1. **Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST):** Increased levels can indicate liver and muscle stress.

2. **Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT):** Elevated levels may signify liver damage.

3. **Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP):** Changes can reflect liver and bone metabolism disturbances.

4. **Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH):** Increased levels can indicate muscle and tissue damage.

5. **Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT):** Elevated levels may be a marker of liver stress.

6. **Creatine Kinase (CK):** Increased levels indicate muscle damage or stress.

7. **Superoxide Dismutase (SOD):** Activity can decrease, reflecting oxidative stress.
