With the recent rise of AI, some journalists and media agencies are fearing an invasion where their journalistic work is used (sometimes without permission) as sources to generate personalised content, or to support social media users in their own quest to become opinion leaders.

In 2023, the government established a national strategy for the digital transformation of media, with the ambitious goal that by 2030, most media agencies in Vietnam must switch to digital. According to this strategy, all Vietnamese media agencies must reconstruct their newsrooms toward digital convergence.

AI can facilitate the smoother management of press and media operations, driving both results and performance, but the slow application of such tech also poses the risk of increased costs from old processes. This is creating a new challenge for Vietnamese press agencies and traditional media in the AI era.

In celebration of the 99th anniversary of Vietnam Journalists' Day, VIR is hosting a talk show themed "Embracing AI for the modern media" on June 12 to discuss the rapid and powerful digital transformation in the press and media that is being driven by AI.

The discussion promises to be informative and engaging, featuring insights from various speakers who will explore whether AI will push international and domestic press agencies to transform and upgrade themselves to create new values and offer new services, or if it will lead to artificial media dominating traditional forms.

One of the primary tasks assigned by the government to the Ministry of Information and Communications is to lead the development of a digital transformation strategy for the press. This strategy will have a profound impact on the entire Vietnamese press system, affecting professional operations, state management, as well as journalism training and research.

This transformation is necessary for the survival of press agencies. As media entities, they also generate value for businesses that utilise their communications services.

Discussing and analysing theoretical and practical perspectives on the issue of digital transformation in journalism will contribute to shaping a vision, goals, and key tasks and solutions that are appropriate for the entire industry as well as for individual agencies and organisations.

Since the advent of AI, expanding the reach of newspapers while generating revenue has become increasingly complex. Despite these challenges, press agencies today remain focused on enhancing the customer experience and attracting and retaining readers. They must deliver accurate, transparent, and timely information to their audiences.

VIR’s talk show on June 12 will feature representatives from press management agencies, international media organisations, and both domestic and international entities involved in the AI-driven media landscape. Speakers will include Do Anh Duc, dean of the Multimedia Department at the School of Journalism and Communication, University of Social Sciences and Humanities; Tran Dinh, head of the Fintech Committee at the Vietnam Blockchain Association; Nguyen Thanh Son, chairman of MVV Group; and Dr. Long Nguyen, Associate Programme Manager for Professional Communication at RMIT Vietnam.
