Tết Đoan Ngọ: Vietnam’s Unique Festival of Renewal 🇻🇳

As the gentle warmth of early summer graces the verdant fields of Vietnam, a time-honored festival stirs the hearts of its people. Tết Đoan Ngọ is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month annually in Vietnam and some other Asian countries like China, Japan, and Korea. If you’re an expatriate in Vietnam, this is a festival you wouldn’t want to miss.

🇻🇳 The Legend Behind the Ritual
The origins of Tết Đoan Ngọ hark back to a time when villagers, after a bountiful harvest, faced an onslaught of pests. Đôi Truân, a sage whose advice would become the cornerstone of this annual festival. He suggested setting up simple altars adorned with pyramid-shaped rice cakes and fruits, coupled with engaging in physical activities. Lo and behold, the pests vanished, and a tradition was born.

🇻🇳 Traditional Cuisines for Tet Doan Ngo
Absolutely, Tết Đoan Ngọ is not only a cultural festivity but also a culinary delight. The festival is known for its unique and traditional dishes that are believed to cleanse the body and ward off evil spirits. Here are some of the special foods associated with Tết Đoan Ngọ:

_ Bánh Ú (Pyramidal Sticky Rice Cakes): These are essential to the festival’s food offerings. Wrapped in banana leaves, these cakes often contain a filling of beans and are infused with the essence of banana leaves, giving them a distinctive flavor.

_ Cơm Rượu (Rice Wine): This refers to little balls of fermented rice that are bathed in wine. The fermentation process gives the rice a slightly alcoholic taste and a unique texture.

These foods are not just treats for the palate but also carry symbolic meanings and are integral to the rituals of Tết Đoan Ngọ. They represent the connection between the people and their ancestors, as well as the wish for health and prosperity.

🇻🇳 Fast forward to today, and you’ll find that the essence of the festival remains unchanged. At the stroke of midday, the hour of Ngọ, families come together to perform rituals that symbolize the purging of pests from their fields and lives. It’s a moment of unity and collective action, a time to pray for a year free of troubles and full of prosperity.

So, to those who find themselves amidst the beauty of Vietnam during this enchanting time, let your heart be touched by the depth of this cultural gem. Embrace the emotion, the heritage, and the vibrant tapestry of Tết Đoan Ngọ, and let it become a part of your own story.

Life is a balance of give and take, and perfection is a rare find. In Quang Ngai, we embrace the simplicity of life away from the hustle and bustle of larger cities. It’s a place where you can escape the chaos of crowded streets, traffic congestion, air pollution, and the constant rush of urban life. Our small town offers a peaceful retreat for those seeking serenity.

Quang Ngai boasts a diverse natural landscape, with stunning beaches, fresh seafood, and breathtaking mountains. While our nightlife may not rival that of HCMC or Hanoi, it provides just the right amount of entertainment to unwind after a day’s work. Plus, we’re conveniently located near the airport and popular destinations like Hoi An, Da Nang, and Nha Trang, offering the best of both worlds.

Life comes with its ups and downs, and adapting to a new place can have its challenges. However, it’s important to approach these experiences with an open mind and respect for the local community. As a resident, I look forward to welcoming you and hope you’ll find joy and positive experiences during your stay.
As summer arrives, why not explore the beauty of Ly Son Island? It’s one of the many treasures Quang Ngai has to offer.

🇬🇧 Vu Lan Festival at Minh Duc Pagoda, Quang Ngai

Minh Duc Pagoda, the pagoda with the statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva that is being built with a height of 125m, will be the highest statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in the world. Although it is still in the process of being completed, this year’s Vu Lan Festival, the pagoda has organized some events for Buddhists to come and make wishes.

Vu Lan Festival, also known as the filial piety ceremony, is one of the main Buddhist festivals, originating from the legend of Muc Kien Lien Bodhisattva who saved his mother from the hell of hungry ghosts. Vu Lan has long become an annual festival to commemorate the gratitude of grandparents, parents, and ancestors in general, reminding each of us to appreciate what we have, reminding the duty of those who are children to always remember the grace of birth and nurture of parents through filial deeds to express their affection and gratitude.

Nowadays, Vu Lan Festival is not only a sacred religious festival but it has also spread and become a filial festival for many Vietnamese people. In addition, Vu Lan Festival also has a special and profound meaning, directing each person back to the origin of the nation, based on the moral “When drinking water, remember its source; when eating fruit, remember who planted the tree” of our nation for thousands of years. Vu Lan Festival in Buddhism has become a tradition of the spirit of gratitude and filial piety; in line with the spirit of worshiping ancestors and ancestors of each Vietnamese person, it is a great festival with a deep humanistic feature, highlighting the moral of gratitude and reciprocity of the nation.

| 🇻🇳 Nghề Thu Hoạch Rong Mơ ở Quảng Ngãi (English is below)

🇬🇧 The Seaweed Harvesting Job in Quang Ngai
[The photos were taken by Alex Cao, a photographer in Quang Ngai. These photos are a part of the “Heritage Journey” photography contest 2023]

From June every year, the seaweed fields grow full under the seabed, and rocks, and float up when the tide recedes. The coastal people of Quang Ngai only need to bring a sickle to harvest seaweed. If anyone has more resources, they can equip themselves with small baskets, paddle offshore, and dive under the water from 2m to 7m deep to harvest seaweed. The process of diving and harvesting seaweed starts in the early morning until late afternoon. The seaweed exploitation job brings a source of high-income source for the fishermen along the shore. Therefore, when the season comes, the whole beach is crowded with baskets of seaweed.

Well-noted:
seabed: the bottom of the sea
resources: the means or opportunities to do something
equip themselves with: carrying or wearing something.
offshore: the direction away from the land.
along the shore: the location near the coast.

Hoàng hôn trên Bình Minh 🌥
[English is below]

_________
🇬🇧 These photos were taken by Fujifilm on the late summer days in Binh Minh commune, Bình Sơn district, Quang Ngai province. They capture the beauty and tranquility of the rural life, where people live in harmony with nature and each other.

The sun is setting over the horizon, painting the sky with shades of orange, pink, and purple. The green paddy fields stretch out as far as the eye can see. Smoke rises from the roofs of the houses, where the locals are preparing their dinner after a long day of work. The air is filled with the aroma of rice, fish, and vegetables, as well as the sound of laughter and chatter.

These photos are more than just images, they are stories of hope and happiness.

| Mía đường xứ Quảng - Hương vị quê hương
[English is below]

🇬🇧 Sugarcane from Quang Ngai - The Taste of Home

In the past, Quang Ngai was famous for being the home of sugarcane and sugar making. Every sugarcane season, the villages were filled with laughter and singing. The traditional sugar kilns burned day and night, white smoke rising to the sky. The smell of fresh sugar was fragrant throughout the neighborhood, reminding the children away from home of their peaceful childhood. Perhaps that's why the folk songs of Quang Ngai have a verse:

Quang Ngai, our lovely home
Where the cane is juicy, the sugar is pure and bright
Syrup, sugar floss, and caramel
Candy glass is yummy, and hard to resist once you try

In December, the sugarcane ripened yellow on the branches, sweet in the heart. That's when the sugarcane season began. The sugarcane huts and sugar kilns that had been "sleeping" for nearly 3 seasons were now bustling from 3 - 4 am until late at night.

Not only products from sugarcane such as brown sugar, "candy glass" (a kind of candy is transparent like crystal and crispy, easy to break like a mirror).... fresh sugarcane juice is also an indispensable part of the memory of many generations of Quang Ngai people.

The juice from sweet sugarcane is mixed with a mild sourness from tangerine or lemon. People passing by between the villages can also stop by the roadside, drink a glass of cold sugarcane juice and continue their journey. Natural sugarcane juice is both clean and nutritious. The cries of selling sugarcane juice, the sounds of carts rolling on dirt roads have entered the memory of many people. The beauty of the countryside seems to appear before the eyes of those who have attached their childhood to this rural area.

Sugarcane and sugar bowl are not only products of pride but also images of homeland with nostalgia for those who are away from home.

If you have a chance to pass by Quang Ngai, stop by the roadside, and drink a glass of delicious and cheap sugarcane juice with a rich sweetness like the heart of the people here.

| 🇬🇧 Mì Quảng - Quảng Ngãi

Mi Quang is a specialty dish of Quang Nam province, but it has spread to many other regions. Each place has its own way of preparing and seasoning this dish, but they still retain the essence of the original Mi Quang. In Quang Ngai, Mi Quang is well-known and loved by many people because of its unique ingredients.

Mi Quang in Quang Ngai consists of thick noodles made from rice flour mixed with turmeric water and steamed into square or round sheets. The noodles are then coated with peanut oil and cut into strips about 5-10mm wide. The noodles are served in a bowl with various toppings such as pork or snakehead fish, chicken, shrimp, frog, boiled quail eggs, and a small amount of broth cooked from pork bones. The dish is also garnished with roasted peanuts, chopped green onions, red chili, herbs,… to enhance the flavor and appearance. Unlike other places, people in Quang Ngai only pour enough broth to moisten the noodles and vegetables, because the toppings are already well-seasoned and rich in taste.

The dish has a distinctive flavor that attracts and stimulates the taste buds of the eaters. It can be said that once you try it, you will be addicted to it, and if you don’t have a bowl of Mi Quang for a long time, you will miss it and crave for it.

If you ever visit the distant land of Quang Ngai Don’t forget to try the delicious Mi Quang.

Whoever comes to faraway Quang Ngai
Remember Tra Khuc River with rolling waves
