The first annual BVI National Surfing Championship had two contests for the men's division: an open and closed event. The Men's Open, like the contest for the four national surfing team places, was won by Rush Broderick, who took home $1,000 for the effort. In second place was Wes Markin, followed by Liam Brosnan and Zebedee Bamford.

The government had been warned about the poor state of healthcare on Virgin Gorda long before the death of Revovion "Bucky" Sprauve, who died last week after finding the Nurse Iris O'Neal Medical Centre closed.
