A state of emergency (SoE) has been declared in Trinidad and Tobago following a tragic massacre in Prizgar Lands, Laventille, where five men were fatally shot in an apartment. Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley authorized the declaration on Monday morning, citing heightened criminal activity and escalating gang warfare as threats to public safety. President Christine Kangaloo enacted the SoE under Section 8(2)(C) of the Constitution, based on recommendations from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.

This unprecedented measure comes amid a record-breaking 620 murders in the nation this year, highlighting a severe crime crisis. The proclamation emphasized the urgent need to address actions endangering public safety on an extensive scale. The last SoE occurred in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, and before that in 2014, in response to crime waves that have persisted. Authorities aim to restore order as residents grapple with escalating violence across the East-West Corridor.

The 2024 Winlott Windward Islands Under-15 Super50 Cricket Tournament kicked off on Sunday with wins for Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground and Gros Islet Playing Field, respectively. Saint Lucia defeated Grenada by five wickets, led by skipper Jeanille Williams, who took 3 for 21 and scored an unbeaten 33. Grenada, batting first, was bowled out for 115, with extras contributing 41 runs.
