🎉Congratulations to the Honorable Maria Elena Cruz! 🎉

Yuma’s very own, the Honorable Maria Elena Cruz of the Arizona Court of Appeals, has advanced in the selection process for the next Arizona Supreme Court Justice! A total of five (5) applicants have been forwarded by the Commission on Appellate Court Appointments to Governor Katie Hobbs for consideration.

This is an incredible opportunity for representation from a rural community like ours on the State's highest court!🙌

Judge Cruz’s journey reflects her dedication to fairness and justice in all communities:
✅Cocopah Tribal Judge Pro Tem (2004-2008)
✅Yuma County Superior Court Judge (2009-2017) and Presiding Judge (2017)
✅Initiator of Yuma County Restitution Court, a model now expanding statewide to ensure victims receive access to justice
✅Arizona Court of Appeals 2017-Present
✅Continued service as a Judge ProTem in Yuma County while serving on the Court of Appeals

Raised in Yuma, Judge Cruz returned after law school to raise her family and give back to the community that shaped her. Yuma is still home as she and her family remain deeply connected to her hometown.🏜

🚧 Highway 95 Road Closures & Updates 🚧

Yuma County is conducting pavement rehabilitation on Highway 95 between County 22nd and 17th Streets, including asphalt replacement, new striping, and sidewalk ramp upgrades in Gadsden.

Key Updates:
Highway 95: Milling and paving northbound lanes continue in Gadsden.

County 19th Street: Starting 1/9/2025, widening work begins with pavement replacement from Highway 95 to College St. Striping is scheduled for the week of 1/13/2025.

Road Closures:
1/8/2025: Left turns from County 19th St to Highway 95 closed during off-peak hours, reopening by end of day.

1/9/2025 - 1/12/2025: County 19th St closed to thru traffic from Highway 95 to Avenue I.

Detour: Use Avenue I to reconnect with Highway 95. No turns onto County 19th St.

Interested individuals are invited to attend the third public work session for the Yuma Joint Land Use Plan. A Joint Land Use Plan (JLUP) is a strategic planning process intended to coordinate community development goals and military operational needs. The study area includes the City of Yuma, City of Somerton, MCAS-Yuma, and Yuma County.

The meeting will include a presentation of project updates, a review of the community questionnaire and fact-finding exercise results, and preliminary findings of the housing assessment.
