Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide.1 It often doesn’t cause symptoms until it enlarges within the lung or metastasizes (spreads) to other areas of the body. Smoking is the leading risk factor, but it can affect non-smokers as well. In the United States, lung cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer.
Paraneoplastic syndromes may trigger diagnostic testing. Diagnosis is established through imaging studies, tissue biopsy, and, sometimes, liquid biopsy blood tests. There are several types of lung cancer, each defined by the type of lung cell from which they started.
Treatment includes surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and/or symptom management. The outcome of lung cancer is generally better when it is diagnosed at an earlier stage, but each type of lung cancer has its own anticipated prognosis as well.

Thyroid cancer is cancer of the thyroid gland in the neck. It is the fifth most common type of cancer in women in the United States. The increase is attributed to earlier diagnosis due to more sensitive imaging tests.1 Thyroid cancer affects women more often than men. It has a good prognosis. Risk factors include family history of this cancer, radiation exposure, and low dietary iodine.
Thyroid cancer may be detected incidentally with imaging studies done for another indication, or it can cause a visible neck lump. This cancer is diagnosed with imaging tests, such as thyroid ultrasound, and a needle biopsy. Treatment can include surgery, radioactive iodine, chemotherapy, radiation, and targeted therapy. Thyroid hormone replacement medication is usually needed after the thyroid gland is removed.

Prostate cancer is a slow-growing cancer of the prostate gland. Prostate cancer actually refers to a wide spectrum of diseases, with some tumors being aggressive and others that act more benign.
Prostate cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men.1
Urination issues are the most common symptoms of the disease, though most cases are first detected by screening tests, such as a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test.2 A formal diagnosis can only be made with tests such as an ultrasound-guided or MRI-targeted biopsy. Treatment options range from active surveillance (careful monitoring) to surgery and radiation and depend on your case.

Caring for a loved one with cancer is one of the greatest expressions of love. Putting aside the busyness of life to care for one less fortunate can be incredibly rewarding and there are few things we do in our day-to-day lives that are as important. At the same time, being responsible for the care of a family member or friend can be exhausting, and if adequate attention isn't given to self-care, it can lead to compassion fatigue and burnout. Doing too much without the support of others can also create feelings of resentment that linger long after the crisis is over. What can caregivers do to care for themselves while they care for others?

Kidney cancer encompasses a few different diseases, though renal cell carcinoma is by far the most common type.1 Historically, symptoms of flank pain (pain on the side and lower back), an abdominal mass, and blood in the urine were the most common presenting signs, but today it's often discovered incidentally when imaging tests are done for another condition. A CT scan is the most common diagnostic test, though other imaging studies may be done as well.

Kidney cancer is somewhat unique in that surgery may be done even with advanced tumors. Both targeted therapies and immunotherapy drugs may be used, with chemotherapy and radiation therapy playing a lesser role than with some other cancers.

Bile duct cancer, also known as cholangiocarcinoma, is a rare type of cancer that affects the bile ducts—thin tubes in the digestive system that run from the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine.

This cancer is usually incurable, in part because symptoms usually develop after the tumor has already spread. About 10% of people survive five years or more after diagnosis.

Colore**al cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the United States, and it’s the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths.1
Most colon cancers are caused by growths within the inner lining of the colon, called polyps. The chance of a polyp developing into cancer depends on factors, like the type of polyp (adenomatous polyps are considered precancerous) or if it has abnormal cells (called dysplasia).

Ovarian cancer affects a woman’s ovaries and surrounding structures. It rarely causes symptoms at early stages, but may cause infertility or produce vague abdominal and pelvic discomfort at late stages. Ovarian cancer comprises 1.2% of cancer diagnoses and 2.3% of cancer deaths in the United States. The average five-year survival rate for all types of ovarian cancer is 49%. However, if ovarian cancer is found and treated before it spreads outside the ovaries, the five-year survival rate is 93%.1
Ovarian cancer is linked with hereditary and environmental factors. It is diagnosed with a combination of clinical exam, imaging tests, and biopsy. Blood tumor markers, like CA-125, can be elevated.

A brain tumor is a mass of abnormal cells that grow in the brain. Brain tumors can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). They can originate in the brain itself or be the result of cancer that has spread from another part of the body. Those that are cancerous frequently grow rapidly, while those that are not tend to grow more slowly.
While benign tumors are generally less worrisome when they occur in other parts of the body, in the brain they often grow large enough to disrupt normal functioning. If they do, surgery is required.

Multiple myeloma (sometimes referred to as myeloma) is a rare type of blood cancer that involves the abnormal growth of plasma cells—a type of white blood cell—that accumulate uncontrollably in the bone marrow. The immune system is impacted due to the inefficiency of the plasma cells to produce healthy antibodies, which fight infection. The overgrowth of plasma cells crowds other blood cells, reducing the number of healthy red and white blood cells.

Childhood cancer is a common worry among parents, especially when their kids are sick for more than 5-7 days without a good explanation. Some jump to the conclusion that their child might have cancer. Unfortunately, parents often don't voice that worry to their pediatrician, who would usually be able to quickly reassure them that their child likely doesn't have any type of cancer.
