Next week, the Yountville Town Council and the Napa Valley Unified School District’s (NVUSD) Board of Education will consider a purchase and sale agreement for the Yountville Elementary School. This is the first step toward selling the former school site to the Town of Yountville. Though not final, the sale is expected to close by May 30, 2024.

Once finalized, the sale would provide NVUSD with eleven million dollars ($11,000,000). These funds would be invested back into local NVUSD schools through infrastructure improvements like new roofing and other repairs. The Town has begun all necessary due diligence and plans to allocate another $1.5 million, if the property is acquired, for initial clean-up and beautification, interim community uses, and a robust public engagement process to determine the long-term future of the site.

This week in the Sun, Yountville couple Jim and Marianne Lyon share their story of being stranded in Ecuador after a wave of gang violence prompted that country’s president to declare a state of emergency.

Also this week, we recap a day-long goal-setting session in which the Yountville Town Council identified several priorities for the upcoming fiscal year including the purchase and development of the elementary school property, creation of a microgrid for backup power, and adoption of a bicycle and pedestrian master plan. A place for dog owners to let their pooches run free was also on the list. 📷:beingkimmy #

In this week’s , read about a growing Ukrainian refugee community in Napa and Sonoma counties and their efforts, assisted by local residents and non-profits, to build new lives here while also supporting their countrymen and women back home. Among those efforts is a Jan. 13 fundraiser in Yountville that will be a celebration of the Ukrainian culture and spirit.

You can also read about a longtime Calistoga winery put up for sale by its racing-legend owner and his wife, and about state lawmakers’ 2023 efforts to cut the bureaucracy of home building to ease a worsening housing crisis. Giving Tuesday is next week, November 28. Support Napa County nonprofits through CanDo’s Napa Valley Give!Guide. From education, the arts, environmental organizations, animal welfare and community nonprofits. Be part of this community of givers, now through December 31.

This week’s featured Give! Guide category is Animals! You can find these organizations through http://nvcando.org/give-guide
Read below to learn more about this week’s animal based nonprofits and why you should donate to them!

FRIENDS OF NAPA COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER: https://friendsofnapaanimals.org/
They assist animals facing adoption barriers by covering medical and behavioral care costs. Additionally, they support adoptive families during costly medical emergencies, ensuring they can keep their pets. Friends of Napa County Animal Shelter also fills the Pet Food Pantry on a regular basis and provides treats and toys to the animal shelter.

NAPA BUNNIES: https://napabunnies.org/
Napa bunnies is a volunteer-based nonprofit with an overall goal of improving the lives of rabbits and reducing the number of unwanted rabbits through education and spay/neuter efforts. They also focus on the education of proper care for rabbits.

NAPA CART: https://napacart.org/
Napa CART's mission includes educating the public on animal disaster preparedness, aiding Emergency Services in animal care during disasters, and training responders and volunteers in animal rescue. Volunteers support animals during wildfires, setting up seasonal shelters for large and companion animals.

NAPA HUMANE: https://napahumane.org/
They are the sole provider of regular below-market rate spay/neuter and receive no government funding. Napa Humane provides vaccines, microchips, and pet wellness. They also give educational materials to children teaching them how to be friends to animals.

NAPA WILDLIFE RESCUE: https://www.napawildliferescue.org/
NWR is the only organization in Napa County permitted to rescue, rehabilitate, and release wildlife. They assist orphaned, injured, and sick animals. Their educational outreach includes free wildlife programs in elementary schools, providing 'wild animal ambassadors' to students. Additionally, they offer reasonably priced barn owl box installation for rodent control and cultivate native plants on their properties to enhance local wildlife habitat and food sources.

RIPPLE EFFECT ANIMAL PROJECT (REAP): https://rippleeffectnapa.rescuegroups.org/
Their focus is on preserving the bond between pets and owners, offering assistance with spay/neuter costs, behavior/training help, medical support, and necessary resources. REAP also rescues animals with medical challenges or senior pets from shelters, ensuring their final days are spent in a loving home.

SUNRISE HORSE RESCUE: https://sunrisehorserescue.org/
They rescue and offer sanctuary to abused horses, educate about horse welfare issues, and provide equine-assisted learning. Through their Horse-in-Need Program, they prioritize calls, offering critical resources like veterinary support, feed, and transport.

WAGGIN’ TRAILS RESCUE FOUNDATION: https://waggintrailsrescue.com/
Through various programs, including rescue transport and local foster/adoption, they find loving homes for the underdogs in our communities. They endeavor to educate about the crisis of animal overpopulation, the importance of spay/neuter, the impact of kindness to animals starting from early childhood, the importance of pre-need planning for animal care necessitated by death/disability, and the availability of services for companion animal assistance.

WE CARE ANIMAL RESCUE: https://wecareanimalrescue.org/
They offer compassionate care, sanctuary, and adoption services for small animals in need, providing life-saving care, emotional and monetary support, and crucial welfare resources in our community. They are also the sole shelter in Napa County providing hospice care for cats.
